‘Into The Jaws of Death'

Robert F. Sargent was a Chief Photographer’s Mate in the US Coast Guard. He is best known for the historic D-Day photograph he took of troops of Company E, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division disembarking a landing craft (from the U.S. Coast Guard-manned USS Samuel Chase) on Omaha Beach, June 6th 1944.

After wading ashore, enemy fire will cut many of them down.

The photograph’s title "into the jaws of death" was taken from Alfred Tennyson’s poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade”.
