Forgetting herself in her excitement, Ellie poured over the pages of the magazine without looking up, spying a few familiar games but not recognising most. She only really knew what Riley had shared, Mortal Kombat being their favourite. “So fucking cool,” Ellie muttered, flipping the pages, almost forgetting the other girl was there. That was, until, the red head mentioned a high score. Eyes widening again, Ellie looked up at her in awe. “Woah. You’ve got a high score? Dude. That’s awesome. Which game?” She couldn’t believe the stranger not only actively played video games, but had a high score. And was currently sharing the magazine with her. Suddenly noticing how close their faces were, Ellie blushed, letting go of the page and moving back in her seat.
“No,” she replied quickly, her mood noticeably sobered both by the realisation of their closeness, and of the memory of that last night with Riley. Glancing at her switchblade, she paused, torn. The subject was still of great interest to her, despite the grief. With a sigh, and some obvious hesitation, Ellie continued on, not meeting the girl’s eye. “Only once. My best friend, she found this old arcade back in the QZ. It was huge. She’d busted open this machine and gotten all these coins, so we got to play Mortal Kombat II. I was Raiden, obviously. She beat me at first, she’d played before and she knew all these combination moves and did a fatality,” she explained, returning to her original tone, gaining excitement once more as she remembered the screens, the lights. It was one of the most beautiful things she’d ever seen. “She literally spat out my bones, it was so cool. But I got her back, in the end.” Ellie was smiling now, but it began to falter the more she sat with it. She wondered, then, if Riley had let her win. Ellie glanced at the girl, suddenly feeling shy, and wanting desperately to change the subject. “Who are the boys?”
It didn't take long for Max to come to the conclusion that this girl was cool, someone more on her wavelength. It actually made her smile, her cheeks flushing with pride as her high score was congratulated. The boys had been too jealous to appreciate it, and Billy had mocked her, deeming it a waste of time. "Thanks. I play a few of them, but Space Invaders is my favourite. Those aliens hate to see me coming."
Max's grin sobered as the girl quietened though, wondering what was on her mind. She rehashed their conversation in her own head, figuring she must've said something wrong somewhere. Talking to girls her age wasn't exactly an expert subject of hers. But then she continued on, and Max tilted her head, listening to every word with genuine interest. It seemed to perk her back up, so despite Max's curiosity, she avoided questioning it further, even if was unsure what the girl meant by QZ, and why there was an arcade there. "That sounds awesome. I'm actually pretty bad at Mortal Kombat, so you could probably kick my ass too. As long as you taught me a few things, though, I wouldn't be mad at it."
Unsure of how to continue the conversation, despite wanting to, Max began to shuffle through the magazine's pages again, hoping another topic would make itself known. Luckily, she didn't have to wait long, her friends soon being questioned. "The boys names are Richie, Carl and Howard. Richie's an asshole, but he's funny sometimes. Howard's the sweeter one, but he's still very sarcastic, and smart. Carl is... actually, I don't know how to describe Carl. They're boys, so they're all weird." She chuckled then, meeting the girl's gaze. "Oh, and I'm Max."

Having suspected someone young, Matt tilted his head at her confirmation, wondering what she was doing out there alone. If he focused in, drew himself out of the meditative state he’d been trying to get into, perhaps he could work it out. Smiling at her question, Matt turned toward her, starting to listen to her heart rate.
“Hey now, you really expect me to believe you haven’t broken a rule or two? I remember being fourteen.” Granted, he hadn’t had the most conventional of upbringings, but rebellion was still second nature to a teenager. While he’d been talking, though, he’d noticed the quickened pace of her heart, a signal of fear. She’d recently been distressed, but it was wearing off. Matt tried hard to keep a smile. “What are you doing out here then?”
"Nothing that you can prove," Max quipped, having to suppress the corners of her mouth from turning up. Although, if she really thought about it, the only rules she'd ever broken were Billy's. Her mother didn't care enough to set any, and she'd never committed anything illegal if you discounted the time she stole a pen. Perhaps that would change now she'd befriended Carl, as the Gallagher's always seemed to be running from trouble, but for now she had a clean record.
"Oh. I was just — skating around, and then I got distracted. I haven't spent much time in the park before. It's quieter than I thought it'd be." It wasn't a dishonest answer, but Max withheld the details. The reason she was out here was because she'd been chased out. To avoid further questioning, she deflected. "Which is probably pretty normal compared to whatever the hell you're doing."
Alexandrian school detention wasn’t nearly as bad as being thrown in the Hole, but Ellie was still angry regardless. She was angry at the dumbass kid who’d nearly exposed her scars to the whole school, the one who she’d punched square in the face and landed her here. She was angry at Joel for sending her to school in the first place, angry at the concerned looks Tommy and Poe had given her when they’d found out she'd gotten into a fight, angry at the teacher currently minding detention, angry at herself for ending up in this situation at all. But sitting just below the surface of that anger was anxiety, agitation, disappointment. Ever since Tommy had suggested she attend school like Sam, she’d begged not to go, dreading being away from Joel, desperate to avoid authority and people her own age. Worse still, they were all strangers, and Ellie didn’t trust a single one of them. She only ever felt safe around the few people she’d come to rely on, ones who were now almost family. Not that she’d ever dared to say the word aloud before, not wanting to tempt fate. She knew better than most that everything could change in a second. Begging had worked for a few weeks, Ellie a master at pushing Joel’s buttons. But after a round-table discussion, her remaining guardians had ultimately decided school was inevitable, and surely she’d love learning? Ellie rolled her eyes at the memory, glancing around the quiet classroom.
Only a few other students had been granted the honour that was after-school detention, but they all seemed to have something to do. She’d spent the first hour drawing in her diary, but with the portrait of Super Sam complete, she grew bored, and uninspired. Now, she sat glaring at nothing in particular, twirling her switchblade between her fingers, until the turning of pages caught her eye. Slowly, Ellie looked toward the girl beside her, trying to subtly read the front cover. And when she had, her eyes went wide. Without thinking, Ellie leant over, hissing the question to avoid the teacher’s attention. “Does that say Atari?!” It looked exactly like the video game magazines Riley had once collected.
Max didn’t know how she felt about returning to school. There were some aspects she enjoyed, like spending time with her friends, the free lunches, and the few certain subjects that didn’t want to make her fall asleep. The survival classes were cool, too, even if she’d already learned the basics simply growing up the way she had. More than anything, she valued the time away from Billy. He couldn’t hover over her here, watch her every move, control her. So when the detention came, a result of her failure to complete homework and the mouthful she’d given because of it, Max didn’t see it as an issue. It only gave her more time to read in peace. Sure, she was supposed to be writing out her essay, but the teachers weren’t strict enough to monitor every second of the hour.
Max’s eyes were flicking over the pages when she felt someone lean towards her, followed by a somehow quiet hiss of words. “Oh, erm — yeah. It does.” At first, she suspected the question to be mocking, as most of the students here were former careers. They didn’t value video games, or reading. But as Max met her eye, she noticed something akin to excitement, or at least an enhanced form of curiosity. The red head dropped her guard, pushing the book closer to the girl, so she could read for herself. “I’m just looking for a few ways to beat my high score. I’ve already kicked all of the boy’s asses, but I want to make sure it stays that way.” She’d rather die than let Richie take first place. He didn’t enjoy gaming as much as she did, but Max had no doubt he’d master it to spite her. “Do you play?”
