I do enjoy a Jonathan gets taken instead AU but any time I try and have serious thoughts about it all I come up with is him exploring the woods in the upside down, finding one of the portals, crawling through it and being like, well, that was an upsetting 48 hours, time to never think about it again or tell anyone about that! And just goes back to his life.

I’ve been operating under the assumption that the spin-off animation show is targeted at a young audience and will pull some cheapie children’s entertainment moves indigestible to any adult viewer, so (a) I’m not going to watch it and (b) I’m not shocked that they introduced a visually incongruous new girl. I did see someone (from the show?) defending the character’s getup by citing Eddie Munson’s metalhead look, and that’s kind of funny. First because Eddie is somewhat incongruous as a character, at least to the point that it’s a little eyeroll-worthy how the characters act like he’s been at Hawkins High all along. Second because Eddie’s clothing, hair, and accessories are all plausibly attainable for a small-town teenager with a little disposable income. Nikki’s look is too polished.

Honestly I’ve thought about it and that’s a way weaker defense than just going “it’s a cartoon aimed at a younger audience, so there’s a different aesthetic.” Why would you remind people of the main show, which is totally different, with a comparison that doesn’t hold up?!
