Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.

I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.

About the hikers in Indonesia that were killed climbing an active volcano that you are prohibited from climbing, I don’t think local authorities should have to foot the bill for rescue & recovery efforts for tourists that came to their country and turned off their brain. I don’t know what it is about traveling that makes (read: mostly white) people think that that they’re immune to natural disasters, the hazards of the local landscape and wildlife. I can’t afford to go anywhere and if I could afford to go to the beautiful, culturally & historical rich and diverse country that is Indonesia, I would have thousands and perhaps millions of better things to do than scale an active fucking volcano.

Lots of great places to scuba dive in the Maldives, especially for someone with a background in marine biology but nooooooo let’s go in a FUCKING CAVE with a maximum depth of 230 feet.

Idk the effects 5 rotting bodies would have on the delicate cave ecosystem but I think the government would have been totally justified if they were like “Yeah. We know they’re dead at that depth if they haven’t resurfaced. Let’s just leave them there so no one else has to die the same way they did while trying to recover their bodies.”
