“It’s terrible,” confides the kitchen maid who had come to fetch Claire — one of the twins, although she can’t tell whether it’s Maisie or Mhari — with a shiver of almost delighted horror. “She’s gotten herself full ‘cross the palm, deep as if she’d meant to cleave through a chop. Maisie near fainted when the blood started goin’. I wouldna have expected that, honestly, for I’ve watched her pulling the guts from chickens since we were weans.” 

Mhari, then. “Sometimes the circumstances can make all the difference in these things,” Claire says, trying to find a place for her basket of supplies to rest against her ever-softening hip as they climb the last of the stairs and head toward the kitchens. Mhari, still chattering, does not seem to notice that perhaps a healer in the seventh month of her pregnancy and sweating in the close heat of August and a welcoming billow of warmth from the ovens would appreciate a hand. 

At least her irrepressible talk has prepared Claire for the wound she’ll be treating. Laoghaire is indeed seated with her palm up and a handkerchief pressed to it, already soaking through with blood; a first, similarly stained cloth lies on the table before them. Mrs. Fitz is by turns comforting her granddaughter and berating her in blustery gasps for her clumsiness, although the girl simply sits pale with her head down through both. Looking her over with a healer’s eye, Claire doesn’t like the fine tremor which shakes through her limbs, and immediately requests tea made with plenty of precious honey while she settles beside Laoghaire and prepares a cloth soaked with alcohol alongside her suturing kit.
