What entertainment could a child possibly find amongst Claire's instruments and remedies, Jamie wonders as he walks toward the surgery to fetch his granddaughter for dinner. Mandy is full of fire and curiosity, too — a small Claire, heart beating bold and easy now; despite their rules, he might easily find his wife's things shattered or misplaced.

But Mandy isn't running wild when he arrives, instead bent over the cot where she's tucked one of her dolls.

"Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ," she scolds. "You didn't take your tonic, and now look what's happened!"

Meals and Memories

Lately, her parents are playful, even at dinner. Mama’s eating one-handed, resting the other in Da’s. He fusses in Gaelic, which Claire pretends not to understand.

Only Jem is certain to remember Claire with brown curls. But all the kids have a chance at seeing their grandparents like this: Mama sliding into Da’s lap, all innocence as she sneaks a bite of his dessert.
