The Subtle Art of Folding Space
ByΒ John Chu.
kensyouen_Y
I've seen the first 3 seconds of this and scrolled on so many times and only now do I see my mistake
Whatever the ups and downs of Starfleet Academy, I will die on the hill that actually some people needed to see a leader sitting weird in a chair. Our concept of who makes a "good leader" is actually way too skewed towards body language, how people dress, their vocabulary and other things that don't actually affect the quality of their decision-making. In 2026, we put too much emphasis on whether someone "looks like a leader" - polling companies regularly ask this about politicians - and not enough emphasis on what decisions people are making and why. And of course this bias ends up working against marginalised groups, like all biases eventually do. ("Why is she sitting like a little girl?" is something I've heard more than once)
Having a leader who rejects staunch formality is weirdly one of the most progressive things Trek has done in years. Think about how life changing it would be if you didn't have to worry about what impression your stance, your clothes and your appearance were giving off. Imagine people reacting purely to the value of what you are saying and doing, and absolutely nothing else.

ok so. I've been thinking. what if leia's "thing" is that she's imperceptible in the force. like, she's so innately powerful at shielding, she's just not there. Anakin didn't know padme was having twins because he literally couldn't sense leia's presence. yoda and obi-wan were fine with bail taking leia because they couldn't perceive her thoughts, even as an infant. neither reva nor vader could penetrate her mind. she spent years in the senate alongside palpatine and he had no idea she was force sensitive. the only person who can see leia for who she really is is the one who has been there from the beginning β luke.
luke: hey i am getting intensely powerful and somewhat intimidating vibes from leia, like the vibes of a dominant and ancient power buried beneath the surfaceΒ
Β the gang: looks like SOMEONES never talked to a strong woman before
That is a DAMN FUCKING GOOD headcanon.
What's the timeline of the girl's machine fuckery? How long did it take for each of them to be changed? Who was first?
i didn't think about this that much tbh. i imagine all of them been having small changes for some time (like Mizgir started growing fur) until something really bad happened to each one of them And Anne was the first one to get a drastic change after their head got fully blasted off and was replaced with random goat head. It was in the very early days after joining the army so everyone else were curious and annoying about it lol

AU where Julianβs genetic augmentation is actually discovered pretty early on but instead of being reported to Starfleet Command, it just becomes the stationβs most widely-known secret. Every Starfleet and Bajoran Military officer knows but stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that they do. Whenever anyone from off-station seems suspicious, they all close ranks and cover for him, like:
βHow does Dr. Bashir know so much about [extremely niche subject or unexpectedly useful skill entirely unrelated to medicine]?β βOh, um, I actually forwarded him an article about that last weekβ I thought heβd find it interesting.β
βThe doctor found the cure for this mysterious disease inhumanly fastβ¦β βExcuse me, sir, but do you have any idea how many hours of overtime all the nurses had to pull to help figure this out? Just because he attended Starfleet Medical Academy doesnβt mean heβs better thanββ βAlright, alright, Iβm sorry!β
βIf he really had supernatural intellect, he wouldnβt have thought I was flirting with him when I only saidββ
The Bajorans in particular are unlikely to prioritize Federation paranoia about Augments over the doctor who has healed their daughtersβ broken arms and treated their daily aches and pains year after year. I mean, what does it matter to them, as long as heβs using his abilities to take care of everyone on the station?
I think Julian or O'brien being a woman could change nothing about ds9 but fem!Garak would be a clusterfuck of fem fatale tropes and fem!sisko wouldve had her entire Storyline hijacked by the "divine motherhood" trope. Fem!quark already happened

I know that they intended to reinvent Bashir with the augment reveal but jfc so much of it comes across as Bashir originally arriving thinking "this time itll be different! Somewhere new ! Somewhere ill make friends !" Only to be met with rejection after rejection until hΓ© just shuts everything he's been told is unacceptable back behind that thick wall we all build inside. Even his relationship with Ezri is so shallow. No emotional intimacy or vulnerability. Just one tired, lonely man accepting what is offered because he's been beaten into accepting that now that its all hell ever get
I think Bashir and Kirk would really vibe as two goofy bisexual men with saviour complexes (unless those complexes were opposed).
Garak and Spock, however, would hate each other sight and have the craziest beef known to all of faggotry. The only reason they would stand each other is because of their bfs who theyre pathetically devoted too, like two competitive PTA moms whos kids are friends
Childhood abuse survivor Julian Bashir feeling monstrous even before he knows about the augmentations. Simply for existing. For wanting. For needing.
When he learns about the augmentations... it just has a place to go.
So he makes himself heroic.
Selfless.
The man when wouldve saved Jules.
But he still sees a monster when he looks in the mirror. Because there is a desperately lonely, covetous thing there that he blames on the augmentations. Something he daren't share with anyone because of how certain he is that it makes him a monster.
No one ever stood a chance of loving him, because they only ever saw the shadow on the wall. Even death casts a shadow.
What would it mean to truly be seen?
How can you love an animal so ill-socialised? How can you hold a creature all broken bones and sharp teeth?
He's cured plagues.
He's saved worlds.
He's still just a shadow on the wall.
Jules is still alive in there.

Garak wouldve killed as a scheming eunach in a fantasy, bronze age court
Thinking about how garak never interacts with Jake and sisko. What a wasted opportunity to have that man see, in real time, what decent fatherhood looks like
