And from what we’ve seen Azriel and Elain are similar in the books (both introverted, loyal, polite, thoughtful when it comes to gifts). Both represent hope and respect tradition. They aren’t the exact same person; they differ in some aspects. This is perfectly fine - most people aren’t with someone that’s exactly like them.
To your point about Elain and Lucien both loving nature, it doesn’t really matter because in the books Azriel is the one to actually spend time with Elain out in nature (in the garden).
And yeah we’ve known Elain hides her feelings. It’s pretty clear why that is because she is a people pleaser. Hell the one time she expressed how she felt towards the mating bond, Feyre was pretty dismissive about her feelings. She acknowledged internally that Elain didn’t owe Lucien anything, but to Elain it comes off as though everyone is pushing her to give him a chance.
Why express how she feels if she knows no one will listen? Not to mention how she probably feels bad for neglecting Feyre all those years so she doesn’t want to disappoint her.

I hate that some of you act like Elain and Azriel suddenly became a thing after Nessian.
NO. I DARE SAY ELRIEL WAS THERE BEFORE.
They have been right there since Acomaf. It’s been sitting on the page for the last four books. For a damn decade at this point.
The only thing that stopped Elriel from being the second couple was Lucien blurting out, “You’re my mate” to a traumatized Elain the literal second poor girl came out of the cauldron.
Elriel’s dynamic was already being built.
While Cassian was busy glaring at the sisters and judging them over Feyre, Azriel was reciting poetry to Elain, paying attention to her, smiling at this human girl he’d literally just met and empathizing with her (which earned him a glare from Cas btw) (which Az ignored and smiled at Elain again)
So when people go, “Ugh, 3 sisters / 3 brothers is so predictable and boring,” I just have to laughhh.
Would you say that if Elriel had become the second couple and Nessian had been the third? Or is it only “too predictable and boring” because you guys don’t like Elain?

I watched the light shift inside the sapphire Siphon instead, as if it were the great eye of some half slumbering beast from a frozen wasteland.
Firstly thanks to @amethystblooms for this quote bc without her I wouldnt have found this whole connection.
The quote explains how Azriel's siphon is some great eye of half slumbering = Elain? Bc she is a seer. And beast as in "fanged beast and trembling fawn"?
And frozen wasteland part...I made a theory post before how the middle seems to take inspo from wasteland mythology/motif.
Basically the wasteland happens when a king gets wounded and his land suffers with him...it is literally what happens to the middle and fionn.

The shadowsinger of the Night Court winced as the full brunt of Oorid’s oppressive air and scent and stillness hit him. The three of them surveyed the wasteland.
Sudden winter = middle is wasteland = frozen wasteland
Now how this connects to Elriel.
I said that first quote is about Azriel's siphons. Eye could be elain and frozen wasteland as we talked about is the middle.

I also suspect that "half slumbering beast" could be about Fionn or maybe his power.
In my wild hunt post I theorized that Fionn is not dead but sleeping. In real life mythology it is explained like this:

One day he will awake and defend Ireland in the hour of her greatest need. In one account, it is said that he will arise when the Dord Fiann, the hunting horn of the Fianna, is sounded three times, and he will be as strong and as well as he ever was.
This fits with the wasteland myth as well and I explained it all in post I added above. 🫡

Also I suspect that Elain and Azriel have both Fionn's powers.

And in acotar world Fionn probably has shadowsinger powers.
Is it the land of the middle connected more to Elriel than we thought? Or is it as I suspect that maybe before dying fionn bind his powers to the middle to make it "wasteland" as Helena did with Avallen island?
the avallen island was like the prison island because Helena hid 1/3 of theia's power there and once bryce claimed that power...the island went back to what it was.
Helena had bound the soul of this land in magical chains. No more. No more would Bryce allow the Fae to lay claim over anything.

And it was.

Can we do the same to the middle? Turn it back to what it was before it became a wasteland?

Elain was a relatively happy human woman engaged to a man she loved. After a lifetime of being groomed to be a perfect gentile wife and being told “at least she’s pretty” and that was all that she was worth. Her younger sister accidentally murders a fae and is forced into fae life away from everything she’s ever known, subsequently falls in love with not one but two fae males which leads to her sisters death and being made fae. Sister returns home to ask for help preparing for war. She brings 3 of the most powerful fae males ever to live. One of those males are automatically drawn to you and you to him. Aforementioned war catches up with you and ends with you being taken prisoner and forced into a magical cauldron and forcefully turned into a fae as an experiment. After being turned into a fae, you lose your fiancée, life, and sanity. You end up growing close with the same male you were drawn to when you met and he becomes your lifeline and best friend whilst developing romantic feelings for each other. He’s also the one who figures out what is wrong with you and how to help.
Please tell me how any of this is “boring and overdone” or lame or not settling up an epic romance. Please tell me how two random redheads are more important and better suited for these characters. Please explain how any of the above would result in an author changing her story that has already been written and built up over 4+ books and almost 20 years. All because of a small, angry and delusional section of fans who think they know best.
I mean we’ve been saying all along acotar 7 being black was a nod to Azriel’s shadows.
The OG graphic even has shadows in it. Acotar 6 being pink and blue gradient is elriel/elain all day. She is seen most often in those colours - and lest we forget Azriel’s siphons.
Another day of just… reconfirming what I already knew I guess? I mean I’m not totally convinced that these are the official colours for the books. It seems pretty easy to just put a place holder up for that kind of thing. 🤷♀️
The first fae Elain meets beside Tamlin is Azriel. Strangers that meet but are inexplicably drawn to each other. Probably scared Elain to think she could have a connection to a fae and a male who wasn’t Greyson. And despite her deep love for Greyson, she continues to grow closer with Azriel. Despite everything she’s been told about fae, she chooses to trust Azriel, Cassian and Rhys. Decides to trust Fayre.
She is kidnapped, forcibly tortured and made into a Fae. Azriel is the only one who tries to understand her and spend time with her. His gentle kindness and patience help her come back to herself and allow him to figure out that she got powers and that she is a seer.
Oh but plot twist!! When she is brought back from the cauldron, she’s immediately and forcibly told she’s mated to this random redhead friend of her sister. Despite everyone telling her to give him a chance, despite seeing both her sisters get perfect love matches with their mates, she doesn’t feel anything about her mate. Feels locked in a cage. But also feels guilty about her feelings for Azriel. Because they’re so much deeper and etched into her heart already despite everything. Then Solstice. The tension has been building, the yearning is still growing. He gets her a beautiful necklace and almost kisses her but calls it a “mistake” and of course that hurts her feelings and she gives him back the necklace, which he promptly gets rid of. But they’re both just hurt and lashing out. Azriel bc Rhys tries to forbid him from pursuing Elain, and Elain is hurt by him calling their almost kiss ‘a mistake’ she doesn’t know about Rhys’ ultimatum. All of this is true.
Elain had already fallen for Azriel just as much as he had fallen for her. Yes they desire each other physically but they LOVE each other because of who they are. Elain sees Azriel’s soft heart and his devotion to those he loves. Azriel sees Elain’s strength and compassion despite her circumstance. To him she’s not the quiet, weak sister who needs to be protected. As they fight for their love, they will also become the best version of themselves. With her, Azriel can rest and not have to fight. With him, Elain finds her strength and self confidence. Neither thinks they’re good enough for the other, but they are ultimate missing puzzle pieces of each other’s souls. See to me I don’t think they’re boring or trite or overdone. They are epic. Friends to lovers with a dash of forbidden love. I’ll even bet we see BOTH level up with their powers with each other.
