are there actually new tumblr users or are we just memeing ourselves into a fever dream where this site is popular again like two hundred thousand people hallucinating as they die in a trench
ok hanging out on reddit is actually a great idea. someone said they didnt like henry cavill as geralt because witchers move â10x faster than a humanâ, but cavill only moves at human speeds, and someone replied they were âfascinated by what actor they would suggest insteadâ given the limitation that all actors are human.
âmaybe OP knows the secret to making witchers in real life but no oneâs listeningâ bro đ
âGeralt should be played by a horseâ is the hot take of the day.

weird how no one ever comments on the absence of smells unprompted. the nose just isn't a topic of conversation unless it's urgent huh
"it's dark in here" normal regular observation
"finally some quiet" relatable exclamation
"doesn't smell like anything in here" absolutely deranged sentence
"i'm not touching anything right now" small talk on the international space station
One of the most life-changing things I ever learned came from Mythbusters, where they tested and proved (with cognitive testing puzzles and reaction time tests) that lying down and resting with the intention to sleep STILL provided significant mental benefits over just staying awake, even if a person couldnât fall asleep in the amount of time they had.Â
It helps me to actually sleep to know that just lying down with my eyes closed is still doing me some good, and helps me to not freak out/beat myself up when I stay up later than intended. Any amount of rest is better than no rest!
So if you didnât know thatâŚnow you do

shout out to the literal fan fiction happening a few blocks from my apartment. there has been this halal meat market on the corner for like 19 years that the ownerâs son just inherited and directly across the street this woman opened a kosher grocery store and since day one theyâve had this very friendly fake rivalry, playing it up for the customers, itâs always been super goofy and light hearted. so turns out last night she proposed in the middle of the afternoon rush in the meat market and he said YES and sheâs moving her store to the adjacent empty storefront on the left so they can have a JOINT GROCERY STORE it is so fucking cute I wish them the happiest marriage ever

hylia: okay so here's what's gonna happen. i'm gonna be reborn with my dead boyfriend so that we can save the world together when demise inevitably returns, okay? and then after that, we can just chill. and since we'll be mortal we'll die again at some point, but it's okay we can just reincarnate again and be together again. and we'll protect the triforce but it'll be peaceful with demise dead. it'll be great.
demise, about to create his OWN mortal-sona so he can reincarnate and fuck with link and zelda forever: i think love should lose
Ratatouille is a good movie and all but can we stop ignoring the weird sub plot about how it's wrong for rats to steal? Like. What are they supposed to do then? Buy food? From the grocery store? With WHAT MONEY ratatouille?
I feel like I'm crazy. They make such a big deal about rats stealing? Like they have options? What do you think would happen if a rat shows up at the food bank to feed his wife and kids? He'd be killed remi.

The people's disruption
âInnovationâ is in very bad odor these days. âDisruptionâ is even more disreputable. But as tech and the global south researcher Rida Qadri writes in Wired, âinnovationâ isnât limited to inventing unregulated banks and calling them âfintechâ and âdisruptionâ is more than just misclassifying employees as contractors.
https://www.wired.com/story/disruption-mobility-platforms-politics/
Qadri studies workers who are seizing the means of computation, reverse-engineering and repurposing the apps that are meant to keep them in bondage and figuring out how to set themselves free. Her research on gig drivers in Jakarta is essential reading:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/07/08/tuyul-apps/#gojek
Indonesian drivers have banded together to build clubhouses that serve as break-rooms, union halls, tech workshops and scooter maintenance depots. These centers are the birthplace of âtuyulâ apps, which allow workers to resist algorithmic âoptimizationâ and adapt their working conditions to improve their pay and safety.
In her Wired piece, Qadri gives examples of other âtech workersââââthat is, low-waged, casualized workers who are dispatched and managed by appsâââwho use technology to take back control, from âfarmers who strike against a smart city planâ to riders who band together to get back their stolen scooters.
This is mutual aid, with code. It is every bit as innovative and disruptive as Uber or Amazon, but because it is done by workers, rather than to workers, it is not recognized as such. Indeed, when workers modify the apps that script their movements, theyâre called âcriminals,â not âinnovators.â
Take Doordashâs smear campaign against Para, an app that let delivery drivers find out how much a job paid before they took it (Doordash hides compensation from drivers in hopes of tricking them into taking unprofitable runs):
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/tech-rights-are-workers-rights-doordash-edition
Doordash called Para a criminal app, baselessly accused it of identity theft, and insisted that drivers had no right to know how much they were going to get paid before they committed to a job.
But as Para shows, seizing the means of computation is an important strategy for workers seeking a better life. The tactics of Adversarial Interoperability (AKA Competitive Compatibility or Comcom) can transfer power from Goliaths to Davids:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/10/adversarial-interoperability
But the soi-disant disruptors of the business world will not tolerate being disrupted themselves. Uber is content to skirt labor, safety and transportation policy, but would scream bloody murder if drivers and riders hacked the app to make it obsolete:
