Something just occurred to me in the category of "experiences I feel are universal but are probably not." So here's a poll!

Have you ever been tent camping?

Yes, but not since I was a child

Yes, I have camped in a tent as an adult (possibly also as a child)

No, I have never gone camping in a tent.

We're including any kind of tent, but not RVs, campers, or cabins. Open-air camping (with no tent) or with tarp tents counts as tent camping for purposes of this question.

#Thats my life plan at this point #Aint so bad im gonna build myself a pole barn next to my yurt so i have a storage structure to keep things #And ill move my yurt which i sleep in between the lake area and the woods area seasonally #Im gonna build two grated platforms for my tent but the floor of the pole barn will be slotted and grooved then stained and waxed #Its walls will be composites with an inner waterproof layer and outer of compressed field grass sandwiched between wood panels #The roof will be chicken wire tied tight to the support poles and covered in living sod #If i attach the fabric low on the raised platform i can create pockets of diatomaceous earth around the entire perimiter #As a way to keep the ever present threat of bugs in my living space under control and without chemical pesticides #The rest is handled by sleeping under a net and building pykrete bolstering walls over winters for added insulation and bulletproofing #Important since ill also be hunting on these lands with a real gun #A pellet gun firing steel shot will do well enough over the summers and springs and wont puncture the wood layer #Just my yurt id need to worry about then but i can just fix a hole that small with denim lint and hot wax #I even got plans for a simple shower with a wood powered water heater in one of the corners of the main shack

For anyone unfamiliar with Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the entire thesis is that traditional educational models promote oppression by removing students' agency in their own learning. Freire argues that currently education functions as a "banking model" - teachers are the holders of knowledge, and students are empty vessels, waiting to have that knowledge put into their heads like a piggy bank. This reinforces a passive attitude towards information, not seeking and understanding it on your own terms, but waiting for a "banker" to deposit it into your head.

Instead, Freire proposes that teachers and students act as co-creators of knowledge, where students become active participants in their own learning through questions and dialogue. Teachers are also open to changing their understanding of topics in the process of critical dialogue - the goal is not "student learns Fact A and memorizes it as presented," but instead the goal is the knowledge itself, discovered collaboratively by teacher and student, who are acting with empathy and respect towards each other. This also starts the process of the oppressed being able and empowered to question structures of power, take agency, and actively participate in the transformation of society.

So, the irony of writing an AI essay on critical pedagogy is actually insane; because it's essentially the extrapolated endpoint of Freire's arguments that our current educational system creates passive receptacles who not only can't think critically in an educational context, but also become the perfect citizens for a world that doesn't want us questioning structures of power, to view those in power as we viewed our teachers - deliverers of indisputable facts that must be memorized and regurgitated because they command it, and not co-creators of true understanding.

Like once you really understand Being A Minor as an axis of oppression & look at things through this framework a lot of really jarring things about the transition to adulthood start making sense.
