The Sunshine Child (Part 1)
Asahi let out a yawn, rubbing his eyes to clear them. He wouldâve fallen asleep during his test if it wasnât for his teacher bellowing the time out every fifteen minutes to put pressure on the students to finish on time. He wasnât confident that heâd passed but he was sure he wouldnât fail either.
A girl stood in front of the closed gym doors, her fingers twined together behind her back, her feet rocking back and forth. Her short, curly, orange hair was tied up into short pigtails and she was wearing a colorful pink T-shirt and shorts. Her white runners were getting dusty from the dust she was kicking up.
Why is a girl her age here? Asahi thought to himself. Is she lost? Or is she waiting for someone? Either way, he could never leave a little girl alone if she was lost. He quickly approached her. âUm, excuse me,â he called out as softly as he could. âAre you lost? Are you waiting for someone?â
The girl turned, watching him kneel down in front of her. She blinked at him as he continued rambling off. âYou shouldnât be here! This isnât a playground for little kids. What if someone takes you away? Let me take you to the main office â I can ask someone to call your mother for you-â
âAsahi, youâre going to scare her if you keep talking like that.â Asahi jumped and whirled around at Sugaâs scolding tone. He and Daichi walked toward them with matching quizzical looks.
âI-I wasnât trying to scare her, honest!â Asahi exclaimed, holding his hands up in defense. âSh-she was just standing there and I was trying to figure out who she was and what she wanted.â
âShe does remind me of someone,â Daichi commented. He leaned forward to be at eye-level with her. âWhatâs your name?â he asked gently. âAre you looking for your brother?â
She wasnât looking at him but rather, who was approaching behind him. She started running forward with her arms out wide. âRyuu-nii-chan!â she cheered.
âHey! Natsu-chan!â Tanaka caught her when she jumped into his arms. Noya caught the jacket that fell from his hands. âWhat are you doing here?â
âWho is she?â Noya asked curiously, looking closely at her. âShe kinda reminds me of someone.â
âSheâs Hinataâs little sister! Hinata Natsu,â Tanaka said. He shook her a little bit to catch her attention. âSo, why are you here and not with your brother?â
âNii-chan and Mommy are at the dentist,â Natsu chirped. âNii-chan said Take-san can watch me but I wanted to see you so I ran away and came here!â Daichi grimaced at her words, easily able to imagine how Takeda would panic badly when he couldnât find her.
âNow that you mention it, I do remember Hinata saying he wonât be at practice today because of an appointment,â Suga said thoughtfully. He addressed Natsu. âNatsu-chan, you canât stay with Tanaka because he has to practice,â he said gently. âLet Takeda-sensei watch you, okay? When practice is over, you can play with Tanaka until your brother comes to pick you up.â
âAw, okay,â Natsu said disappointedly. âOkay, Suga-nii-san.â
Suga took a step back in surprise but Noya waved at her. âNatsu-chan, did Ryuu tell you about me?â
âYeah! Ryuu-nii-chan said Noya-nii-chan is really cool!â
Noya laughed happily and slapped his friendâs shoulder. âThanks for that, Ryuu!â
âHey! What are you kids still doing out here?â Ukaiâs booming voice barked at them. The boys turned around, watching their coach stalk toward them. âGo get changed and start warming up! Weâre wasting time!â
âYes, Coach!â Daichi led the way to the clubroom. Tanaka was still holding Natsu and obviously, he couldnât take her to the clubroom while they changed. On the other hand, thatâd be safer than leaving her with Ukai. Fortunately, a new solution came in a flurry of dust and flailing.
âAh! Natsu-chan!â Takeda appeared from the main building and ran toward them. Tanaka put her down and quietly tiptoed away. âNatsu-chan, donât go off on your own like that! This place is very big and itâs very easy to get lost. I know you know some of the boys but please, for your own safety, stay close to me.â
Natsu lowered her head. âIâm sorry, Sensei,â she murmured. âI got too excited, I think.â
Takeda softened at her sincerity. He knelt down in front of her. âHow about this â if you stay on the stage and promise not to disrupt practice or get hurt, you can watch them boys. Itâs better than staying in my office the whole time, right?â
She nodded eagerly. He ruffled her hair gently. âThen we have a deal. Ukai-kun,â he said to the coach idling in front of the gym. âPlease watch out for her.â
âYeah, I will. Go do your work or whatever.â Takeda headed back to the main building, leaving the coach alone with the bright little girl. He was fortunately saved by the boys emerging from the clubroom and coming down to start practice.
Ukai lifted her onto the stage so she could sit and watch the practice. He tried to keep his language to an appropriate level but even without swearing, he could still find ways to motivate the boys to stop goofing off and practice seriously. Like laps, for example.
He stepped out for a moment to answer a call on his phone so he left the boys to practice serving. Natsu cheered whenever Tanaka hit a successful serve or when Noya received consecutive serves. Daichi told him to stop showing off and then to Tsukishima, start serving or else youâll get laps. Tsukishima merely grunted and threw a ball up to hit.
Natsu watched them catch each otherâs serves easily before serving again. She climbed down from the stage and rushed out onto the court, catching one of Sugaâs serves. There was enough force behind it to make her fall onto her back with a surprised squeak. Suga blanched at the sight of her. âStop! Everyone, stop!â
Several stray balls landed and were caught by empty hands. Suga crossed the court to approach her but Noya beat him to her. âThat was so cool!â he exclaimed. âYou just came out of nowhere and caught one of Suga-sanâs serves just like that. Youâre great, Natsu-chan!â
She beamed at his praise. Suga knelt down in front of her and patted her head. âNatsu-chan, that was very dangerous,â he said. âDonât do that again, okay? You might get hurt. Your brother wouldnât like it if you got hurt and neither would you.â
She nodded. âUm,â she spoke up before Suga could stand up. âCan you help me, Suga-nii-san?"
âWhat can I help you with?â he asked.
âUmâŚtomorrow is Nii-chanâs birthdayâŚI want toâŚI want to surprise him but I donât know how,â she said in a rush. âCan you, um, help me?â
âHinataâs birthday is tomorrow?â Suga repeated. He glanced at his teammates for confirmation.
Tsukishima shrugged and Yamaguchi shook his head. Kageyama looked thoughtful. âI think he mentioned that once or twice before,â he muttered.
âIt is!â Natsu insisted. âHeâs gonna be a year older tomorrow!â
âWeâre not doubting you, Natsu-chan,â Daichi assured her. âWhat kind of surprise are you thinking of? Do you mean a party or a cake or presents?â
âA party! At home. When he comes home and we surprise him with those party poppers,â Natsu answered. âMommy said sheâll help but two of us isnât a surprise.â
âWeâll help you out, Natsu-chan!â Tanaka said, sweeping her off her feet and into his arms. âIâll ask my sister to help us. Maybe even Take-chan or Coach can too! Youâll help us right, Daichi-san? Suga-san?â
Daichi nodded. âOf course. Hinata is an important member on our team so itâs only natural we celebrate his birthday. We can ask Coach and Takeda-sensei for help when they come by. Ennoshita, you said you live close to a bakery, right? Can you buy a cake? Weâll pay you back tomorrow.â
âSure. Itâs no problem, Daichi-san,â Ennoshita said with a nod. âI think I even have the perfect present to give to him.â
âSame here! But I have to buy it first,â Tanaka said, laughing. âHey, Natsu-chan! Remember to keep all of this a secret from your brother, okay?â
âOkay!â she cheered. âYay! Nii-chanâs going to be so happy!â
For the rest of practice, the team came up with a plan for throwing a surprise party. Ukai and Takeda volunteered to help out by driving them to his house and back afterwards and Daichi assigned each of them a task, whether it was buying presents, decorations, or snacks. At the end of day when Hinata returned to pick his sister up, everything was ready for action.
Natsu waved good-bye from her brotherâs arms. She hid a smile as she turned back to face forward.
Part 2 might be late but it will go up! Happy early birthday, Hinata!
