i have decided instead of going back to art school, I will be visiting local diners 2-6x a month
the plan is to use this time to build a personal syllabus + check in
i have a large pile of art books that I own, a library card, and the internet
the personal syllabus is going to be structured and straight forward -- this week's session is going to be tasked with "build syllabus + check in structure" -- the general idea being a personally accountable WHAT IS MY GOAL and WHAT RESOURCES OWNED/BORROWED/TO ACQUIRE do I need to accomplish it?
the problem with school s there is a mission -- get you a job, make you famous, teach you Specific Thing They Have Set Up the School For, networking...
...build an alumni donation pipeline...
(Conveniently, I ran my own obituary as I was leaving undergrad + my graduate program went out of business a few years ago)
Accounts for every other week (when I am otherwise busy)
Accounts for a few times a week (when I am stuck)
Separation from a computer, less distraction
Accessibility of phone, in case I need to look up something
Combining the two: I am not anti-technology. I am weary of a self-imposed / very common feeling we all must be connected a lot.
Diners are open 24/7, I can slot in as needed -- day or night, weekday or weekend
Table is large enough to have a notebook laid out to take notes, study progress, etc. The goal is not to make (significantly large) art in the diner, it is Academic Focus Time
...kinda want to invent Diner Academia aesthetic...
Sound fun? Like something you need in your life?
I am posting this publicly as a "if this serves, take it and use it, modify to your direct personal needs/wants/resources."
I believe in the power of the internet to come up with new ideas and/or (in this case) cobble together existing ideas (i.e. diner study sessions + art school focus = this)
I will always believe in the power of the internet
