I Wish I Made These

A friend of mine, with the same comedic taste, recommends me to watch this movie. I asked who acted in this movie and he said “You won’t know a single soul, but you will enjoy it”. So I did, and I was impressed. The title made the movie sound dark but I promise it isn’t dark at all. Well, maybe some part gets a bit dark but the rest of the movie, it’s pure hilarity. The story is about a group of vampires from different “age group” living under the same roof, having the same roommate problems as us mortals do. You know like no one ever wash the dishes, the house is super messy all the time and how it gets super bloody after a meal... Well, maybe that last one is just them. The movie is shot in a mockumentary style with a few central characters and many human and non-human extras. Each brings an extra spice to the whole movie and it is delicious! I recommend the F out of this movie!

This is one of those movies that were not under my radar at all. None of my friends talk about it nor have I seen any of the advertisement online. Until one day, Jonah Ray (of the Nerdist Podcast) mentioned it in passing on one of the episodes. He mentioned how amazing Jake Gyllenhaal was on this movie and that’s it. Based on its name alone, I assumed it was a superhero movie like Kick-ass or Super. So, when I learned that it was a movie about people who records video footages of shocking clips for the News, I was very intrigued. And Jonah was not wrong at all. Jake Gyllenhaal is exceptionally amazing in this movie. He transformed into someone unrecognizable and love to hate. I cannot stop recommending this movie to any of my friends. It’s so unexpected and very well put together. AH-MAZING movie.

The only reason why I started watching this show is because of Adam Scott. I have the biggest crush on him since I started watching Parks & Rec. But I didn’t continue watching Party Down only because of him. Heck No. I thought the premise of “actor/writer/Catering staff” is so uninteresting that the whole show is stupidly hilarious. Plus, the funniest people on television are on this show: Ken Marino, Martin Starr, Jane Lynch, Ryan Hansen, Lizzy Caplan, Jennifer Coolidge and Megan Mullally… Need I say more? Too bad the show only lasted for two seasons. I think the premise could’ve expanded even wider with extra cast members and new story lines. Fun show! 

Can I just say something to get it out of the way? Tina Fey is Queen! She’s the queen of comedy. Okay, maybe it’s a tie between her and Amy Poehler. But still, she’s one of the top-TOP lady QUEEN of comedy. Now that I got it out of the way, let’s talk about the show. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the funniest, weirdest comedy I have seen lately. I mean, this show is hilarious in so many levels. The jokes in this show are so tightly packed that a re-watch is always needed. I don’t understand how Tina Fey comes up with these sorts of stories. Each character is so well developed that there isn’t a tiny bit of hesitation shown by the actors. They just play their characters “straight” and believe every line that came out of their mouth. I sometimes don’t pay any attention to the story line to be honest. I pay more attention to the characters’ antics. That’s what draws me into the story. They all say such weird things that I wish we live in a world like that.  I usually have a favorite character in any shows I watch. This one, I can’t choose. Each character is too good, too funny to even separate from each other. All the characters in this show make Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt whole. And by the way “Unbreakable, they’re alive dammit. It’s a miracle” is stuck on my head EVERY.SINGLE.DAY! Good job!

Another amazing show starring two of the funniest person on television: Casey Wilson and Ken Marino. I adore Casey Wilson on Happy Endings and I love-hate Ken Marino on Party Down. This show was the perfect medium to showcase their hilariousness with a simple premise. The sad thing is, this show is now cancelled. I was expecting it to run at least another season before it got chopped off from the NBC Tuesday line up. It has so much potential to grow! Oh well, I can at least hope they will release the remaining four episodes. Fingers crossed!

Lately, I’ve been consuming a lot of zombie entertainment. Not sure why I did, but I’m not complaining. iZombie is the latest zombie obsession of mine. The premise is new to me and I’m liking it. What’s different about this kind of zombie is that Olivia Moore is a productive zombie. Productivity is always good in my book especially used in solving crimes. How, you may ask? When the zombies in this world ate a brain, they can duplicate skills and re-live memories of the brain owner. Since Liv work in a morgue with a lot of John and Jane Does, she can help the detectives to figure out who murdered theses victims. I feel like this show is a mix of Bones, Warm Bodies, and Veronica Mars. It’s snarky, smart and funny. I’m lovin’ it!

 What’s special about this particular concert is that it’s the day Zayn decided to quit the band. I thank the lords that I only knew about the news hours after the concert ended. I was in a bit of denial for a while but I finally just let it go. It was a roller coaster ride of emotions that day. Pre-concert: Overwhelming excitement and panic. On concert: A little disappointment, hysteria and intense happiness. Post-concert: Anger, disappointment, sadness and acceptance. It was an interesting night for me. The range of emotions that I went through was exhausting but it’ll forever stay in my memory (or should I say, “in my Midnight Memories” *budum csss*). Overall, it was a great concert.

The hurdles I went through to get Ed Sheeran’s tickets were insane. But it all pays off when I got to the show. Nothing but good things happened on that show. As I enter the venue, I saw the simplest stage set I’ve ever seen. Four speakers placed in a semi-circle shape, surrounding two microphone stands with a couple loop pedals beside the stands with one huge backdrop for graphics. That’s it. With the lights on, the venues feels so empty. But as the light dimmed and teenage screams starts filling the room, hysteria starts to bubble up inside me. Ed Sheeran walked out on stage and the stage is no longer empty. I screamed with excitement as he starts making beats using his mouth and guitar. That magical loop pedal made the set sounds so complete. He doesn’t need anyone to perform. All he need is himself and his guitar. Honestly, I almost cried out of happiness. His voice and simple performance is enough to make the whole room shook with excitement. One of the best moments is when he sang Tenerife Sea. He let the whole audience sang the Lumiere part over and over and over again with him smiling and listening. It was so soothing. He even shushes one of the audiences when they started screaming. It was one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever experience. I will make sure I see him perform the next time he comes back. Performance rating: A million thumbs up.

This radio play is on top of every “hoax list” I’ve ever seen. It is talked about so often that I just made myself listen to the whole radio play. To be fair I was curious, so it wasn’t a chore at all. The novel was presented in a news bulletin manner with very little introduction. I was quite shocked on how real it sounded. I understand completely why this play caused panic amongst the original radio listeners. First of all, it was broadcasted in the 1930s (1938 if I’m not mistaken). No internet to check what the whole deal was about. So there’s that. Second of all, Orson Welles did such an amazing job in reporting the “news” that even I believed it. A bit of an input: if you’re planning on listening to the play, don’t do it at night in the dark. It’s double creepy. You won’t be able to stop looking at the window, making sure no aliens are actually attacking us right now. 

So, the whole reason why I even know this band is because I always make a “festival line-up” playlist before attending said music festival. And I am very VERY happy that I did. Jungle is the grooviest shit I’ve ever heard. They have such a specific sound that makes your body move no matter where you are. It’s a mix of funk, percussion noises, and rhythmic bass with falsetto voices guiding you through a psychedelic journey. I was amazed at how well produced the album is that I didn’t even think about how amazing it would be to hear them live. And man, they did not disappoint. They have one of the best set in the whole festival. Their set was as clean as the album and could be heard from the furthest corner of the area. I don’t think I stopped bobbing my head through their whole entire set. I would LOVE to see them perform again someday, in another music festival hopefully. 

I watched this movie on a bus, on my tablet, beside a cranky lady when I was on a holiday tour. It seems like an odd thing to do but it does not matter. What matters is that I enjoyed this movie immensely. I know ya’ll are tired of me saying that “I love to see man in drag”, but I do! And this is the perfect movie to watch. There’s a lot of high heels, dancing and sassiness. I also love the fact that it has a simple story line yet an interesting premise. And you know what, NICK FROST IS IN IT! I was so happy to see him act as someone very unlike him. I hope someday I could see the stage version and hum along to the songs they perform on the movie. A fun movie to watch!

I’ve been putting this movie on hold for the longest time. Until one day, I was stuck in a 14 hour flight with a list of movies I haven’t watched. So I watched this movie and I was so happy that I did. I’m not sure what to categorize these kinds of movies. It’s an apocalypse movie but feels like a coming-of-age movie. I enjoy movies that feature main characters who aren’t likely to be friends and ended up spending a wonderful time together. It’s a bitter sweet feeling. The ending of the movie is a catastrophic one, not surprising at all. What’s surprising is how these two ended up meeting each other and spending the last few days on Earth together. Unlikely paring, but it is wonderful. I did shed a tear at the end of the movie. Thank God no stewardess passed by my seat at that moment. I’d be so embarrassed.  What a wonderful movie! 

One day, I was visiting a local record store with the goal of buying a couple of familiar records. As I walk to the cashier, I heard this particular song that caught my ears. I asked the staff who is singing, and they took out their Hundred Waters record. They were playing Murmurs on the speakers. There was something about the vocalist’s voice and the combination of the instruments played that made me sway and smile. I’m not being biased, but listening to them on vinyl is much better. The sound is way more three dimensional and it hit you hard, in a good way. I have to say Out Alee is one of my favorite tracks. That echoing rhythm with Nicole’s voice is just the perfect combination. I listened to The Moon Rang Like a Bell for days after I bought that vinyl. It’s an amazing record to listen to on a gloomy day :)

This movie is so weird. A story about “innocent and cute” assassins is an odd premise to begin with. But the way this movie was shot was captivating. You can’t help but be curious on how the story takes you on a journey. I enjoyed watching this movie. Maybe story wise, it could’ve been stronger. But I do like the way the movie ends. And also, TATIANA MASLANY was in the movie!!! Super excited about that one (though her part was super tiny). 

And this quote, ladies and gentleman, the only reason why I started reading this book. And this book does not disappoint. This novel features a strong female character (her name is Ifemelu, so beautiful don’t you think?) trying to make it in an unfamiliar land with endless obstacles. Though the quote above mentioned that marriage is not the only thing females should aspire to but it is something that most female would want. It feels that Ifemelu thought me that no matter how hard, it is possible to overcome those obstacles and find love along the way. 

It is a definite fact that Skeleton Twins will never be shown in the theatres of my home country. So I waited until a copy of this movie float around in the World Wide Web. I have high expectation of this movie because it is played by the two funniest people I’ve ever known (Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader). I imagine this movie will tickle my funny bones as hard as Bridesmaids did. As I watched this movie… Oh lord… It’s depressing as fuck! In a good way though. I love this movie so much. It’s so dark and funny at the same time. My heart floats when I watch this movie. It went up and down and side to side during the roller coaster of emotional journey. It took me a couple of days to process the movie. I am impressed by the story, the actors and the emotional craziness this movie left in my heart. 

I’m so obsessed with movies based on a true story. I would watch the movie while researching the real story online. I tried my best not to do that with this one and it sort of work. I did cheat a little bit before the movie started and went crazy afterwards. The movie was oddly satisfying. Most would watch this movie because of Emma Watson but honestly, she wasn't the star in this one. I definitely didn't stay for her. I stayed because of Katie Chang. Her portrayal of Rebecca Ahn is quite mesmerizing. She’s definitely the antihero in this movie yet that same characteristic attribute made me wants to understand her even more. As a goody two shoes, I can’t help myself but cringe every time they did anything illegal which was the whole story line. But I weirdly do enjoy watching this movie.
