empathy is literally just the ability to imagine what another person is feeling as if it was happening to you, and some people can’t do that or do it too easily- doesn’t make them bad people. others still imagine themselves in that situation and feel they would react differently than the person in question. that’s how we get shit like cis people saying ‘if i woke up in the other sex’s body i wouldn’t really mind’, or people putting down trauma victims for not reacting ‘correctly’. finally, having empathy says absolutely nothing about how you’ll actually react. you can feel empathetic and make the situation all about you, or give the person bad advice, or not do anything at all. equally, you can experience zero empathy and offer compassionate, caring support.
