(This is inspired by @bedlamsbard‘s post on how the Avengers tower makes no goddamn sense and then I commented on the post offering to rant about the Barton house and bedlamsbard expressed interest and I am basically a vampire that you have invited in. I’m sorry.)
*CRACKS KNUCKLES*
Have you ever found yourself wondering “Gee, where does Clint Barton live in the MCU?” and then you decided to go with comics based Iowa and call it a day? You are not me. The location of the Barton farm in the MCU literally keeps me up at night. One day I’m going to do something insane like pay for a Joss Whedon (blegh) meet and greet just so I can ask him WHERE THE GODDAMN HOUSE IS.
The short version is it’s in Missouri.
The long version is:
Ok so first of all there’s two different houses. You didn’t notice because you are a normal person BUT I NOTICED because my brain decided in 2015 to fixate on Laura Barton and never looked back.
So let’s start with the Endgame/Hawkeye TV house because it distresses me less.
This is the house that first appeared in Endgame:
(Remember that truck, it’s going to be important)
This is the house that also appeared in Hawkeye for all of the exterior shots (they built new interiors).
This house is outside of Atlanta, it is a real persons house, you can find the address on the internet (please do not go looking for it)
So, the Barton’s live outside of Atlanta then, maybe? Right. WRONG
In the Hawkeye behind the scenes feature, Trinh Tran (the executive producer of the series), says this:
But the problem with this is that, as of Endgame, the house is canonically in Missouri!
Remember that truck?
The Missouri license plate is hard to see in this screenshot, but it’s much easier to see in the film, because the camera focuses on the truck as Clint walks past.
So, until they confirm verbally that Clint and fam live in Iowa, I say that it’s more likely they live in Missouri, just based on this license plate. Either this plate was mistakenly left on or, imo more likely knowing Marvel, it was put on the car on purpose.
But now this leads us to….the first Barton farm.
THIS is the OG Barton farm from AOU. As you can see, it is a completely! different! farm!
And it’s so pretty!!! It was apparently built in a park in England? And presumably just??? dropped to the ground???? when they were done filming???
This house drives me crazy because of this and also because IT’S BEEN SEVEN YEARS AND WE DON’T KNOW WHERE IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE
Look, another truck! Can we see the license plate? NO!
LOOK AT ALL THESE LICENSE PLATES BEHIND TONY. CAN WE READ THEM? NO!
So where is this house supposed to be??? Iowa??? Missouri??? England??? The Moon??? Where is it? Where is it Marvel? @ joss whedon I just want to talk!!!! and also punch you in the face maybe a little bit but mostly talk!!!
In conclusion. help.
I love this @paperairplanesopenwindows, but I am one of the people who went, “Sod it, he lives in Iowa.” I’m British, what the hell do I know about American states anyway ;)
(But! Sometimes! I imagine that they moved after AoU because some idiot revealed where their secret farm was, Clint. Or that to keep it secret they change licence plates, and tell people the wrong state, and stuff. Like, ‘ha ha, yes, actually we live in Washington.’ ‘Well then why didn’t you show up for Natasha while she was being roasted?’ ‘Um, we were… living somewhere else… that week?’)
Sometimes I wish my brain would allow me to declare that the first house is in Iowa, Ink. I’d probably be a better adjusted person.
We all fixate on something to research! 😄
As much as this has continued to bug me since 2015 (I LIVED IN THAT FARMHOUSE MENTALLY, YOU ALL READ THE FIC), my headcanon has always been that they moved during/after the Accords and that’s how I justified it.
