With more and more Ao3 authors restricting their works to the archive (due to AI scraping), they're going to be losing guest interaction. And probably generally feeling down because. You know. AI is stealing their hard work.
So! Now is a great time to stop by your favorite authors/stories and drop them some comments! They really appreciate it!
also put in a request for an ao3 account if you don't have one! an account will let you make bookmarks of your favorite fics, store a reading history of fics you read while logged in, set a profile picture, all sorts of goodies :)
I know the invitation wait list numbers look intimidating, but it maths out to like 12 days rn.
That's not that long! Plus there's a lot of folks in the notes with invites offering them to people who don't have accounts!
Readers: Make an AO3 account!
Authors: Restrict your works to the archive!

"It doesn't help your credibility to exaggerate, most employers wouldn't literally work you to death" like, I used to work in distribution. If booking a truck driver for back to back shifts until they fall asleep at the wheel, crash, and die counts as being worked to death, I have personally met employers who've worked employees to death and gotten away with a slap on the wrist. It may not be universal, but it's a hell of a lot more common than a lot of us would prefer to think.
The FAA had to explicitly make rules about how long pilots have to have off between shifts, and how far away from their home you can pin their home airport, because it doesn't mean shit that someone has 10 hours between shifts if they have a 2 hour commute each way. They had to make these rules because multiple passenger airplanes crashed because the pilots were exhausted from tight scheduling. Employers won't just work you to death, they'll take a hundred random customers with you.
Happy belated Workers’ Memorial Day, celebrated April 28th
There’s a reason American workplace have fire exits and stairwell exits that aren’t locked and that’s because in 1911 123 women and girls and 23 men died in a garment factory fire. Some burned to death or asphyxiated while others jumped to their deaths.
Their employers locked the factory fire exits and stairwells so that labourers wouldn’t take ‘unnecessary breaks’ or steal. The youngest to die was 14.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire caused new laws regarding safety standards.

other drivers will see your safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and go "is for me? 🥺" and then proceed to not use their turn signal before swerving into your lane
something my mum always taught us was to look for the resources we're entitled to, and use them. public land? know your access rights and responsibilities, go there and exercise them. libraries? go there and talk to librarians and read community notice boards, find out what other people are doing around you, ask questions, use the printers. public records offices? go in there, learn what they hold and what you can access, look at old maps, get your full birth certificate copied, check out the census from your neighbourhood a hundred years ago. are you entitled to social support? find out, take it, use it. does the local art college have facilities open to the public? go in, look around, check out their exhibit on ancient looms or whatever, shop in their campus art supply store. it applies online too, there is so much shit in the world that belongs to the public commons that you can access and use if you just take a minute to wonder what might exist!!!
hey if you live in the usa i am on my knees begging you to go to benefits.gov and take their quiz to see if you qualify for literally any government benefits at all. the income requirements for some stuff (i.e. SNAP) are actually not quite as low as one might think! the quiz is really straightforward and only took me around 5 minutes to complete. i do recommend a computer over a phone but it works ok on mobile too. it will share so many great resources for you and will show you things even if you only technically meet one eligibility requirement.
- A luxury you can’t live without? - A luxury I can’t live without? Coffee. I really like good coffee. - That’s not a luxury, you can get it anywhere. - …I like nice socks?
[id: gifs of larry king interviewing danny pudi. larry says, “that’s not a luxury, though. coffee and socks are not a luxury. danny says, “alright, give me a luxury. which - … what luxury should i have?“larry says, “a private plane.” danny says, a bit incredulously, “…. larry, i’m on ducktales.” end id]
Bear witness to the disconnect between a Boomer’s idea of luxury and a Millennial’s.
“Larry, I’m on DuckTales” is something I enjoy saying when I suddenly find perspective.

Wait what
I don't wanna @ anyone because I understand how fast things seem to move in today's landscape of streaming shows dropping entire seasons in one day, and networks pumping out new series constantly to try to attract more subscribers with no intent to actually maintain those shows over time but I just saw someone self-deprecatingly lament that they are still thinking about a show that ended almost a year ago, making fan art and playlists for it, and I want to be very clear:
you can still create fanworks when it comes to old media!! PLEASE do!! there are always going to be new fans who will appreciate it, and veteran fans who are dying for new content and new perspectives. also, less than a year is NOTHING. the original Star Trek series was on TV six decades ago and there are still people losing their minds over it, writing stories and reblogging gifsets daily, and that's only one example.
a fandom lasts as long as there are people who love a thing, even if it's only a handful of people. love what you love and write and draw and make gifs and playlists about it!
raise your hand if you still have brainrot about a show that isn't airing

I think detaching disgust from morality is one of the keys to Chilling Out. You can find inner peace by being able to go "hm! Gross" and recognize if it's an actual problem or not. Cause if it's not an actual problem... it's not your problem 🙏 god bless
Every callout post that's like "she jacks off to Weird Porn! Isn't that gross? Don't you hate it?" I mean maybe but I have the same reaction to sour cream. Personally I'm in the habit of using my brain to determine if something is ethical/moral/etc or not instead of just my first knee jerk reaction, like, "is this actively harmful to anyone involved" is a more useful question than "do I personally think it's gross"
Also if you find yourself doing mental gymnastics to explain why something could hypothetically be harmful, potentially, under the right circumstances, it's probably Just Gross. Especially if the scenario you crafted involves a secret third party besides the Consenting Adults involved ??? You are making up a guy to be mad at, my friend

Hmm… modern iteration of scrimshawing? Slightly more ethical.
