For generations, locals treated her as a symbol of luck and fertility, leaving offerings and even sitting on her lap for good fortune. In 1860, a churchwarden tried to put an end to what he saw as pagan worship and ordered the statue destroyed. She was broken in half, but parishioners were outraged and demanded she be repaired. Today, the diagonal crack is still visible, and La Gran’mère remains a much loved island legend. Coins, flowers, and necklaces are still sometimes left for her, continuing a tradition that has lasted for thousands of years.
