The best drawing advice I can give to anyone who wants to improve quickly is to use cheap notepad paper and ballpoint pens. I know it's tempting to buy the cool fancy supplies but then you'll feel pressured to not waste them. Use garbage materials and burn through them with zero thought. Only use pen because it forces you to commit and stops you from second guessing your lines and redrawing them over and over. Learn how to use your mistakes and then learn how to get it right the first time. I took numerous art classes and nothing taught me more than buying a big pack of Bics and legal pads and sketching anything that came to mind without hesitation. Fill a few pages everyday with the first thing that comes to mind. Don't rip out pages you don't like, just flip to the next page and try again. Watch yourself improve. If you really want to be a good artist, you need to learn how to draw from the ground up without relying on quality materials.

my dream is to one day be serious enough about art (specifically drawing) to justify purchasing a drafting table so i can actually sit with a healthy posture so i don't keep doing bullshit to my ribs and spine

in case it's helpful, I combined this instructables post with a tilt mechanism similar to this to make a removable drawing surface for my existing desk.

The tutorial uses just a drill and screwdriver, but the beefier tilt mechanism would need at least a hand saw and another hinge.

I've found the speedball clips are helpful to keep the surface at the desk edge but tbh an L shape (see carving bench hook below) would probably work just as well if you have the supplies/ability to make it I added the (very basic) tilt brace as I like to put a bit more weight on the surface than the clamps liked while leaning forward but ymmv etc

I used thinner mdf since was cheap enough for a prototype and we have tools and space to use them. It's not pretty but it works well.

The effort/time/money scale really depends on what tools you already have - less than "now bring our your 19th c loom" and more than buying ready-made).

i LOVE flexible set ups like this, and it’s what im currently using! (although i don’t use the carving bench hook, which is genius and im gonna look into getting one!)

that said, i think the issue for me personally with this setup is that it successfully positions the ART, but since it’s not a furniture piece, it doesn’t help position the BODY when it comes to posture and weight distribution bc this tool is intended to be used on a flat table, which is not the ideal position for bracing. the reason i’d ideally like to upgrade to an actual whole drafting table is that you can use the tabletop to bear some weight while keeping the torso tilted forward BUT with the spine straight. it’d be a little more low-impact on the joints imho!

#FELT FELT FELT #honestly as a person w chronic fatigue issues? often the answer is opposite action #it's not ALWAYS the case but it so often is #sometimes u just need to get up and walk some laps inside ur hourse #signed: a person w TWO separate chronic health conditions that cause chronic fatigue #typing this on my phone as i do laps in my kitchen at ONE MILE PER HOUR #while CURRENTLY having a major fatigue flare up (when i woke up it felt like the gravity was 3x)#after 10 mins of 1mph walking i FELT BETTER and was able to do a full HOUR cuz i was into the YT vid i was watching!#i WILL NOT feel like 100% — it’s prolly gonna be a kinda rough day but w the gravity at 2x vs 3x #my baseline energy level is ‘if a person was a dead battery’ so that's what i'm aiming for with this walk #most importantly i do feel BETTER than i did when i woke up this morning #and now after my walk i feel like the battery is at ~30% and now i can at least go do my ADLs
