"Israel is committing genocide" when Jews were the victims of the deadliest genocide ever.

"Israel is an apartheid state" when Israeli Arabs are legally given equal civil and political rights and can vote, stand for political office and have equal access to state courts and services.

"Israel is an illegal occupier" when the Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Fatimid, Ayyubid caliphates/sultanates occupied Israel for over 500 years.

The fundamental issue at stake in 2026 is this: what does it mean to be a Jew in a global context wherein there is a sovereign Jewish nation-state in Eretz Yisrael?

People love looking at their situation and thinking it's completely identical to situations in the past. And there are through lines, there are similarities. Assimilation vs Cultural Conservatism was an issue Judaism faced ever since the first exile, and some basic parts of it didn't change much. But it turns out there's endless nuance within this conversation, with what the context is, with how much you lean into each side and in what ways, and I actually don't think I phrased the two ends of the spectrum right but this is just what they are: two ends of a vast spectrum, that most people are somewhere in the middle of but can still have widely differing opinions.

And then people will start claiming that they're just like the peaceful pharisees who opposed the Great Revolt, while the Zionists are just like the Biryonim, the brutes of Jerusalem (a stance I've seen here, actually! Only once, though, and it was confusing). Or that they are just like the Hasmoneans fighting hellenization, while the secular and/or Reform Jews are the hellenised Jews the Hasmoneans fought against.

There are some through lines, but the conversations aren't really identical. And that's not only true for millennia old debates but to ones from mere 80 years ago, yes. Because the world changed a lot in this time.
