No, because their dynamic literally drives me insane. And it's in everything for those with eyes to see. Like, sure, you have Ilya telling Shane to show off for him and Shane dropping to his knees as soon as he's told to, and I will in no way undercut how hot any of that is.
But, you also have the "more" of it all. Shane doing as he's told from the off; Ilya effortlessly slipping into the dominant role right from the start and Shane revelling in the submission, before they've even gotten physical with each other. And you have "no" in that Vegas bathroom. 'No, you are not in charge here'. 'No, you cannot have what you want, even though you did exactly as I asked'. 'No, this is not on your terms'. 'No, you will wait until I decide I want you'. And then you have Shane standing there, at the cottage, revelling in the fact that Ilya is finally here, in his space, with him. He's preening, patiently waiting for Ilya to touch him; for Ilya to kiss him; for Ilya to decide what it is they will do now. Because he's a good boy. He won't act out of turn. He won't presume he's owed a kiss. He will wait for Ilya to decide what he deserves.
Even now, after more than half a year, it still blows me away that we get this on our television screens.

Ilya never gets dementia. He worries about it, with his genetic predisposition and his frequent head injuries. But he never gets it.
His brother does.
His brother calls him, forgetting that Ilya went no-contact with him. Ilya's silent on the phone, listening to Alexei's wife softly explain it to him and take the phone.
He texts Ilya, asking when where he is. Asking who he's playing next game.
Ilya's been retired for over 20 years.
He knows Shane wants to say something, but he never does. He's just quietly supportive.
One day, it's Alexei's wife that calls him. She apologizes for calling. She tells him Alexei doesn't remember her anymore. Or their daughter. He only asks about Ilya and their parents. She offers to delete Ilya's number from his phone.
Ilya declines.
After that, he starts answering the phone. And talking.
Alexei asks where he is. Ilya tells him he's coming home soon. That seems to make Alexei happy.
Alexei asks who Ilya is playing. Ilya says Montreal. Alexei tells him to win or papa will be angry.
Alexei tells him mama made him soup. Ilya tells him that was his daughter. Alexei laughs, he doesn't have a daughter.
He doesn't remember how cruel he was to Ilya. He doesn't remember how much he loved drugs and drinking.
He was so much like Ilya's Alexei, before he started taking after their father. Before he let his anger at their mother consume him. Before he caught Ilya and Sasha and allowed his fear for his little brother to turn into anger and disgust.
One day Ilya offers his wife, Natalia, to have them visit. Their daughter has visited more than once, even stayed with them for a summer after high school. His and Shane's kids tried to teach her hockey.
Natalia regretfully tells him Alexei is not well enough to travel.
Ilya can't travel to them, not while he's married to Shane.
But their phone calls are enough.
About once a week, he gets to speak to a version of his brother than he had dearly missed. He gets to talk about his mama like she's still live, not dead for over 50 years. He gets to talk about the rink he and Alexei used to play hockey at. To talk about the stray cat he and Alexei once hid in their bedroom for a week.
He finds himself looking forward to the phone calls.

Talking to patrons always killed Shane internally.
He hated itâthe pearly white smiles, the laughs that served as pretty masks, the invasion of space. Everything about it was like a bad dream, and he couldnât escape no matter what. It was never about his comfort, only about the money, and that was something the ballet company sorely needed.
Not that they had financial trouble to begin with. While other companies were scraping what they could from the bottom of the barrel in a world that moved too fast to keep up with, the National Ballet of Canada had its roster of ultra-rich families and foundations that would never leave no matter the circumstances. Even so, Shane still had to mingle with them, and it never got easier.
He never quite knew what to say. Of course he knew their names and basic informationâif they were married, when and how they made their fat fortunes, what their favorite productions wereâbut beyond that, he always felt awkward about prying further. There were some dancers in the company who had no problem shattering the ice with a sledgehammer, but not him. Heâd rather stay isolated in the silence of a rehearsal hall, spiraling into madness as he tried to perfect his scissor jetĂŠ.
âYou must be very excited for the exchange.â
He blinked. Right, he was in the middle of a conversation with an older couple who had been kind enough to sponsor that nightâs performance. It was their last event before the entire company was going to spend the next six months in Russia. Something about steel sharpening steel and lessening tensions between Canada and Russia.
He plastered on his usual smile. âYes. Very.â
Convincing enough.
The woman didnât seem to notice. âI hear the Bolshoi are quite intense.â
âWell, theyâre one of the oldest companies in the world. You donât get that on sheer talent alone,â her husband pointed out with a grunt before clapping Shaneâs shoulder, shaking him once for good measure. âOur young star here is going to give them a run for their money. Arenât you, Shane?â
âYouâre too kind, Mr. Martin,â Shane responded easily like a reflex. âAnd yes, Iâll do my best.â
The wife shook her head. âNow now, Joseph, itâs not a competition.â
âI know,â the older man huffed. âAll Iâm saying is that sometimes egos need to be managed. Shane is just the man to put those Russians in their place.â
âYouâre being ridiculousââ
âNo, heâs right, to a certain degree,â Shane said with a slight shrug. âBut itâs not just me. The entire company is excited to learn from the Bolshoi.â
He had a feeling that if he said it again, maybe heâd believe it.
Mrs. Martin wore a soft look that almost reminded him of his late grandmother. It was almost like she could see right through him. She reached up and pat his shoulder. âIâm sure it wonât be an easy six months, but Iâm also sure itâll fly by.â
God, I hope so. âYeah, I think youâre right.â
She hummed, her hand lowering to find her husbandâs arm. âWell, we wonât keep you too long then. Iâm sure you have to get some rest before your flight tomorrow.â
âIâm gonna need it,â he said lightly. âIt was nice talking to you.â
âLikewise, dear.â
Shane watched them walk away before he sighed, letting his shoulders sag slightly.Â
Perhaps it was time to go home after all. He still had to pack and inevitably reorganize his suitcase three times before he could even think about getting some sleepâall before cooling down and stretching before bed. Playing Prince Siegfried earlier that night left him winded and sore. His ass was definitely feeling it. He was going to have to build up more strength if he wanted to survive the next six months in one of the most brutal environments known to mankind.
He took another sip of champagne. Still too sweet.
As if on cue, a familiar voice groaned, âJesus Christ, if I have to drink another sip of this, I might actually puke.â
He turned to see his dance partner. Rose. He was almost surprised to see her. Somehow she was usually surrounded by the younger patrons who had way too much money and time on their hands. Unfortunately for them, she wasnât that kind of girl.
She was actually more like an angel. Shane couldnât count on his fingers how many times she had saved him from awkward conversations. She knew how to read him both on stage and across a room.
âHow are you still drinking?â she asked, quirking a well-defined brow.
Shane only shook his head, a crooked smile on his lips. âItâs better than nothing.â
She hummed in solemn agreement. âI suppose, but youâd think theyâd buy better booze to send us off,â she pointed out, swirling her half-empty glass for effect. âThis is cheap enough to make anyone completely lose hope in humanity.â
He snorted softly. âOh, come on.â
âIâm not joking.â
âI know youâre not.â
âBut arenât I right, though?â she chuckled dryly. âI mean, if you think about it, our careers are short anyway, we donât get paid nearly enough to survive here in Toronto, and our audiences have been dwindling since the pandemic. Letâs face it, ballet is dying, and us too.â
He was stunned for a moment, staring at her as if an angel had just grown horns. âAre you drunk?â
âYes,â she admitted. âHence why I came to find you. I need you to be my service dog.â
A chuckle bubbled from his chest. âService dog?â
âYeah. To sense when Iâm about to say something regrettably stupid. You can boop me with your nose or something.â
âFair enough,â he relented, his gaze sweeping out over the crowded ballroom.
Most had gone home at that point, but there were still enough guests there to warrant them staying for another half hour or so.
She sighed next to him. âThis is hardly the send-off I was expecting.â
He glanced down at her. âOh?â
Her eyes found his. âYeah,â she lamented. âI mean, I didnât expect fireworks or anything, but weâll be gone for six months in enemy territory.â
âMoscow is hardlyââ
âIt is,â she cut him off with a dry smile. âYou know how the Russians are. Cool. Calculated. Insanely pretty. Meanwhile we apologize for everything.â She downed the rest of her champagne with a sigh. âWeâll be judged the entire time weâre there. Itâll be amazing and all, but Iâm not looking forward to being on my toes all the timeâliterally.â
She wasnât wrong. He knew theyâd be scrutinized, but it didnât leave him with as much despair as he thought. After all, he grew up watching old VHS tapes of the Russian greatsâBaryshnikov was one of his heroes. He remembered playing them over and over, wondering if heâd even be half as good or even half as stunning. Now they were going to Moscow, and the whole thing seemed like a dream. His 4-year-old self would go into shock.
âAnyway, enjoy your freedom now, while it still exists,â Rose singsonged, her voice pulling him straight out of his fleeting moment of nostalgia. âWeâll be under curfew and shot on sight.â
He nearly scoffed as he shook his head. âRose, that was a completely different time.â
âYou should keep up with the news,âshe said, nearly sounding like his father. âThereâs always tension in politics and whatnot. I heard the Russian mafia is making a resurgence.â She caught glance of his unamused look and shrugged. âYou never know. We could be kidnapped orââ
"You read too many dark romance novels."
âWould that be so bad though?â she contemplated. âI mean, the dating scene here is soâŚâ
She didnât have to finish.
He knew it too.
He always felt so lost with anything that had to do with the opposite sex. He never really knew what to do with all those tiny emotions that typically came with a relationship. Somehow he always got lost in his own thoughts and managed to keep everyone at armâs length naturally, but he supposed it was safer that way.
Less messy that way.
He hummed lamely in response.
Rose turned to look at him, her blue eyes soft, and for a moment, he imagined what it would be like to be a normal guy in his position. Heâd probably kiss her in that moment, hold her close, confess and whisper some sweet nothings in her ear. It was what she deserved, but not what he could give her. Besides, it was better for him to have her as a close friend.
âHaydenâs having some of the dancers over at his place. Jackieâs making the usual,â she said.
He could feel his lips curl. âRabbit food?â
âWhat else?â she laughed. âWeâre still on the clock.â
It was going to be a long six months.
â
Vodka did nothing to soothe Ilyaâs frayed nerves.
He swirled the glass once, twiceâalmost expecting some kind of genie to materialize out of nowhere. Maybe if he drank enough, one would actually appear and grant him every wish in his heart.
But alas, he was sitting up against a shitty headboard in a shitty hotel with shitty sheets that felt no better than a burlap sack. At least the woman laying next to him wasnât shitty.
Svetlana was far from shitty. She was the one thing in the world he didnât hateâcouldnât hate. She had seen him at his worst, and even as he continued to spiral deeper into the hellhole of his family business, she still saw him as the stupid little boy who would run around the fields outside his family home to look for a butterfly she made up.Â
His other hand ran up and down the soft skin of her back, feeling each vertebrae of her spine. She hummed softly in response, sinking further into the mattress.
âWhat time is your rehearsal?â he asked, breaking the silence.
She turned her head, looking up at him out of the corner of her eye. âEarly,â she said simply. âNo different than before. Why?â
He looked away before she could analyze his look. Another sip of vodka helped. âI will be there. The president wants to talk about the exchange with Canada. Lots of events that need sponsorship.â
âOh, that,â she said, turning onto her side. âYes, itâs the talk of the town.â Her eyes twinkled in the dim light. âSome of the girls were talking about taking them to a club when they get here. The Canadians.â
âHm, yes, that might be good. Boring lot, Iâve heard.â
She chuckled softly. âDonât underestimate them. I hear they have some very special stars.â She mustâve seen his grumpy expression because she laughed a bit harder, poking his hip. âOkay, maybe not as good as us, but still.â
âAs good as you. There is no us.â
Not anymore.
His heart twisted in his chest. He didnât mean for it to sound biting, but the memories that surfaced were nearly too much. There was a pain there that lingered, gnawing at his leg like a rabid dog.Â
âIâm sorry,â he grumbled, turning his attention back to his vodka glass.
âItâs okay,â she murmured, and he believed her.
She sat up, and his eyes found her curves. They had become such a welcome and familiar sight, mapped out by every inch of him. God, how he didnât deserve any version of herâand yet she stayed despite it all.
Her hand cupped his jaw before she leaned in and pressed her lips to his. His body melted as she pulled away.
âYou should come with us,â she said after a moment, a small smile blooming. âYouâve been busy, no? Itâll be a good chance to blow off some steam. Maybe you can find a shiny new toy to play with.â
A grimace had no trouble finding his features. He always hated when she put it that way.
He wasnât the type to seek anyone out. Not anymore, at least. Ever since his father began to step down, Ilya found himself at the helm of his familyâs business. His older brother wasnât much help either, doing whatever it was he did with the coke-heads and whores for hire. Ilya hadnât the time for loose ends and pretty, empty headsâhence Svetlana. She had no problems keeping personal life out of the bedroom, and she certainly didnât complain when he was rough with her as a result.
âThe only ballerina Iâd fuck is you,â he grumbled, and he didnât really mean it as a compliment.
They were usually a stuck-up breed of attention whores. He wasnât too sure how the National Ballet of Canada would be, but he suspected they werenât too different than the Bolshoi.Â
Then again, there could be a surprise blossom among the thorns. His hopes werenât high, but he made a mental note to check the roster of incoming dancers.
He watched as Svetlana lay her head against his shoulder.
âI know, but you deserve someone to love,â she said with almost a motherly tone.
Almost his motherâs tone.
A wry smile tugged at his lips. âI am not someone who deserves love, let alone someone to love,â he said with resignation. âIâve got too much blood on my hands.â
âAnd yet you still treat me with love,â she pointed out. âNot everyone is capable of that. Even normal, boring Canadians.â
That earned her a real smile from him, one that made his eyes crinkle in the corners and deepen his dimples.
âCome on, Ilya,â she cooed as her hand ran up and down his stomach. âOne more round before I go?â

Chapter 7: Electrons
A huff of warm breath and the start of a slow unravelling of carefully designed systems and structures. A Russian-born man with a Bostonian soul and a decaying sense of self holding onto this strange Canadian wizard with magical hands and unfairly beautiful freckles as he slept, blissfully unaware of the first sparks of an internal crisis within said Russian-born man as he attempted to fight off sleep.
He failed.
Outside the snow continued to fall, first in light flurries, then in heavier sheets until it built up in the corners of the black grille and the windows were an opaque white against an afternoon sky.
