Me in 2006: Iām still bitter about that
Me in 2016: Iām still salty about that
Me in 2026, probably: Iām still umami about that
Well, are you?. Weāre waiting.
Thereās a lot to be umami about these days.
we got a full redbox and now we're playing go fish with the redbox movies
I would never pay money for a redbox. if you ask politely and are very very persistent (i.e. annoying) they will let you take it away
here's my dad and i taking it away
a redbox makes a wonderful addition to your patio
for those wondering why they're free to take now, it's because the company that made those "chicken soup for the soul" books bought them a few years ago and then completely collapsed so bad they couldn't afford to dispose of or even take the blu rays and dvds out of their kiosks all over.
so any of them is free game because they're all located on other business' property and they usually don't want to have to pay to get rid of them either. so asking the store manager usually gets you the ok to pull it out and keep it.
there was a period of time right after their bankruptcy where you could put in any debit or credit card and it would spit out movies without charging you. you could even put in like an expired or deactivated card, or a visa gift card with a $0 balance, didnt matter, they'd just start spitting discs out. a lotta people raided redboxes for movies for a couple months, with some people doing what me and my brother and my dad did here, taking the whole box and signs and marquees as well. because managers sure as hell don't want a big abandoned piece of trash on their sidewalk disappointing customers. BUT they're also often too cheap to pay someone to remove it. so they just sit there.
luckily there are no shortage of freaks like us who will just take them away on our own volition. we did it all "by the book", too: we set up cones and caution tape, disconnected electricity properly, used an angle grinder to grind down the bolts in the concrete so nobody would trip on them, then cleaned everything up afterward and sealed off the electrical panel so the store would know everything is safe and tidy. though they were hesitant when we were first contacting them, they were honestly very relieved and grateful when we finally took it away, especially once they saw that we "knew what we were doing" (we don't) and look like we've "done this before" (we haven't).
the fun part: the reason why this redbox, in particular, was completely full and unraided is because the computer hardware inside had failed some months before the bankruptcy, and a failing company sure as hell wasn't gonna send a tech out to our podunk dipshit city to fix it, so it was impossible to rent movies or take any discs out. plus, for who knows how long, people were returning old redbox discs to this machine and not taking any out, leading to a much higher variety of movies than your average redbox.
there is a thriving community of redbox hackers and modders out there, as well, creating open-source software for repurposing the machines and not letting their very interesting and robust disc-management hardware go to waste. this one belongs to my brother (who was very annoying persistent and did all the legwork of contacting managers and securing permission) who is a programmer by trade and will be hacking it into a family-access movie library, with whatever discs we want. i mean the machine is completely weatherproof and has a built-in AC unit, it would be such a waste to not try to turn it into something cool.
if we get another one, i'm gonna try to mod it into some sort of art or zine vending machine. the disc boxes are just the right size for small print art or stickers. would make a great "little free library" too.
remember: the rules are made up. act like you belong there and you can get away with anything. this applies to your own life

Grocery Cart
Ā The best time to go grocery shopping is around 9pm. The mood is just right: mostly empty, but not eerily so; the employees are relaxed and ready for small talk, whereas earlier theyād be too busy and later too tired.
The cast of characters in the supermarket changes vastly depending on the time of day. People who live on schedules, have families, have their life together, theyāre all gone by then. All thatās left are the shoppers who chose to be there or had to be there (like me, hungry with nothing in the fridge), and the employees who are there because they arenāt going anywhere else. The 9pm supermarket is a place devoid of ambition.
So I go at 9pm, grab a cart from just outside the door, and wheel her in. She seems to have a little more trouble turning than usual, but I maneuver. Fill her up with bread. cheese. milk. bacon. beer. that pre-cooked chicken designed exactly to appeal to lazy 9pm shoppers. I feel like such a tool as I toss it into my grungy little cart. Then I go to check out.
Thatās where it all goes wrong.
I wheel the little cart up to the only checkout with a human in it. I recognize her of course; she works evenings. Iām still expecting things to go as usual at this point, because I havenāt figured it out yet. Iām the only one who hasnāt figured it out. Why is she just standing there? Staring down with a frown?
We are both still and silent for a moment.
āOh no,ā she says.
Iām still wondering why she isnāt checking out groceries. And then she drops a truth bomb that will reverberate in my brain ātill the end of my days:
āThis is not our cart.ā
āOh,ā I say, immediately dismissing that fact as irrelevant to the current situation. Why isnāt she checking out my groceries?
āSee,ā she continues, āIt says:ā and I honestly cannot remember what supermarket that cart was branded with, because I considered it completely irrelevant, but she read the label out loud for me.
āOh, yeah,ā I said. āI didnāt notice.ā
She stands still another moment, and then emits an āoh dear.ā
āYeah, well, weāll survive,ā I say, and start handing her groceries. The checkout process begins.
I find myself pondering the idea that she doesnāt work checkout at 9pm because she likes working checkout but because she doesnāt have the ability or will to get past the tiniest bumps along her path.
āWhereād you even get this cart?ā she says, as she stops again, as if unable to solve the problem of how to check out groceries from an unfamiliar cart.
Itās funny how she tries to put me on the defensive, as if Iād wronged her by bringing in this godforsaken cart. I wonder if sheās looking for an apology or something.
āYeah, it was just sitting right outside the door,ā I say, and help her with the groceries again. āI guess someone left it there after taking it to their car from the other place.ā Oh god, am I really explaining myself to her?
āWell, itās not our cart,ā she says.
I try to imagine a world, a perspective, in which this is a problem. I wonder what itās like to be her, to look at that cart and see it as an obstacle, rather than something so trivial as to go unnoticed. Maybe Iām the crazy one, over-generalizing as mathematicians are wont to do, thinking that the general case of grocery cart can be combined with the general case of grocery checkout lane. Maybe Iām the one in the wrong, treating all grocery stores and grocery carts as equal, when here is a specific case: an individual life to whom her individual place of employment matters.
The last of the groceries go through, and we chat the usual checkout chatter, about non-cart-related things. A bagger arrives and helps put stuff in one bag while I do the other. The checkout lady wanders off.
āYou know,ā the bagger says, āthis isnāt our cart.ā
āYeah, it was just outside the door and I took it without noticing,ā I reply, still wondering why the hell anyone cares.
āI know, I saw you,ā he says. āHave room for this?ā he hands me the half-gallon of milk, a bottom-of-the-bag item, and I glance over to see his bag is almost completely and optimally packed to the brim.
āYeah, got a spot right here,ā I say, slipping the milk down to the bottom of my comparatively sloppy bag.
āYou see, this cart has a lower carriageā¦ā he begins, and starts detailing the differences between this cart and their official supermarket-owned carts.
I suddenly have a vision of carts as he sees them. He is an expert. He knows carts in a way I never will. I imagine him efficiently locating and gathering this storeās carts from the parking lot, knowing them instantly even from blurry far-off silhouettes in the dark and the rain, knowing them by the feel of how they roll and turn, knowing which store a shopper is coming from even when heās facing away because he knows the sound. I imagine him seeing me take this foreign cart and pushing it through the store gathering groceries and all he can see is the glaring wrongness of the cart, so obviously different, wondering: how can I possibly not notice?
How can I go through this little portion of my life ignorantly dismissing what is so plain and clear to everyone around me?
I leave, and they seem glad to be rid of me, and the cart. If you donāt hear from me again, Iāve probably been arrested for accidentally driving my groceries home in some random personās car.
Iām slowly beginning to accept the reality that 2007 was not last year but in fact almost four years ago

Me, trying to impress my date with a display of my boundless humility: I would like to order one single, solitary crumb.
Waitress taking my order: Such arrogance! Not only do you presume to boast under the guise of being humble, but your order employs the most decadent of linguistic excesses - the tautology!
My date, who until recently thought "tautology" referred to the study of tensile strengths and upon learning her mistake compensated by reading through its Wikipedia article: That would be more correctly identified as a "pleonasm".
The editor I hired to curate my posts who styles himself as a sort of scheming court advisor: My liege, this one is getting away from us. The punchline loses much of its impact when the rest of the joke is derailed by this increasingly self-indulgent meta humour. Were it up to me, your Grace, which of course it is not, I would cut the others and leave myself as the only supporting character. You need noone else, Your Majesty...
