Spoken English phonology is tricky and unexpected. Here’s a basic primer.

I don’t necessarily think this is a bad way to take notes unless one person is doing all the work for forty others. Then I think I’d be mad if s/he didn’t take all the notes.

You know you use these words to, uh, gather your time and, like, your thoughts when you’re speaking. But what do non-deaf listeners think when your interpretation contains these words? Like, you know.

On the use of, like, “like” in American rhetorical speech. ‘Like’ has at least four grammatical uses, according to Alexandra D’Arcy, all of which have very specific sociolinguistic purposes. ‘Like,’ in the case of the President’s “stable genius tweet (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/949619270631256064), serves as a hedge (see our discussion in Consecutive Interpreting about powerful/powerless speech and ‘hedging’). Think more about, like, using ‘like’ when you use it.

Politics aside (or not), here’s a humorous look at the problems interpreters have with interpreting for the current American president.

There’s a lot to learn from designers about how they approach their craft. There’s a certain amount of science — vetting, to make sure they’re answering the right questions — but there’s quite a bit of personal input and ‘art’ involved as well. What points does the author make that are also helpful for gathering feedback about interpreting work?
