In a nutshell, the Tories want to hold this election because they think they can win (albeit by engaging in voter suppression).  We need to show them that they are wrong.

Reasons to get these fuckers out:

BoJo the Clown is apparently intentionally driving us towards a No-Deal Brexit

The number of people relying on food banks has increased exponentially every year since the Tories took control of the government

Thousands of people die every year waiting to hear whether their claim for benefits has been successful

Thousands of people have also died within two weeks of being declared “fit for work” and denied those benefits, which is to say nothing of those who died within three weeks, or six weeks, or months later

Tax cuts for the rich, costing the rest of us £9 billion 

They keep ranting about how Brexit is “the will of the British people” but then patently ignored a gov.uk petition that garnered over 6 million signatures - and most Tories didn’t even show up to the debate about it

The NHS is so far up shit creek that patients are dying alone because nurses are too overburdened to tend to them

At this point this election is, much like the upcoming elections in the US, less about voting in your ideal candidate and more about damage control. This means that, although most of us have reservations about all of our politicians and their parties following the absolute shitshow that was the Brexit talks at the start of this year, we have to bite the bullet and vote strategically.

Voting strategically means a few things, like voting in the first place, for one thing, and not splitting the vote.

Some of you might remember, if we go back a few years, when the Tories got into power off the back of a 30% “majority”, and we wound up with a shitty government that most of the country explicitly did not want. This happened because the votes against the Tories were split between Labour and a bunch of third parties that were never going to win. Since the Tories seem to think that they have pretty good odds at winning any upcoming election, we can’t afford to split the vote again, so regardless of any misgivings you may have, please, for fucks sake, just vote Labour. They’re not perfect, I know, but they’re going to kill fewer people than the Tories and that’s what we have to base our decisions on now, apparently.

For those of you who have decided that you “don’t want to play the game” and that you aren’t going to vote, please be advised that not voting is not “not playing the game”. You are playing the fucking game whether you like it or not, because you still have to live with whatever government wins the election just like the rest of us. Not voting is more akin to playing the game but then just saying “PASS” every time your turn comes around, and then getting mad when you lose for some reason. I realise that all of our politicians look like dogshit at the moment but please put aside your grievances and pull together with your fellow human beings to elect the lesser evil.

Now is not the time for idealism or jokes, or “making a statement”. Please, just fucking vote Labour or we’re going to be stuck with these cunts for god knows how long and the UK is going to go down the fucking pan.

If you aren’t registered to vote, or if you’re not sure whether you’re registered to vote, you can do so online here. You can also register for a postal vote, in which your ballot will be sent to you by post ahead of the poll, at which point you can fill it in and return it by post too, without ever having to set foot in a polling station at all. I have a postal vote because I’m disabled, but you don’t have to be disabled to apply for a postal vote. Anyone can register for a postal vote! If you’re not sure you’ll be able to attend a polling station on the day - or if you’re concerned that Certain People™ might try to make voting in person difficult, given that the Tories are already doing their best to prevent students from voting - just register for a postal vote and never worry about it again. ( b ._.)b

No. You’ve survived bad governments before. There are plenty of people, many of whom I’ve mentioned at the start of this post, who have most certainly not survived this government, and it would be doing those people - and the people in similar circumstances who are not dead yet - a gross disservice to let this shit continue. You will be saving lives by getting the Tories out.

neesowa and the chenoo - when an injured chenoo (an evil, cannibalistic monster) stumbles upon neesowa’s camp, she throws the monster off balance by treating him with kindness and sharing her home with him as he recovers, which pays off when another chenoo attacks her camp.

grandmother skull - a young woman, neruvana, marries a man who kills her entire family and abandons her. thankfully, the skull of her grandmother comes to life to teach her how to survive and to help her get revenge. 

beebyeebyee and the water god - a young woman, beebyeebyee, falls in love with a water god who is slain by the envious people of her village. she gets revenge.

three whiskers from a lions chin - maria wants to help her husband, who returned from war a changed man, and the local bruja sends her off to get three whiskers from a lions chin, apparently a key ingredient in a magic spell that will bring her husband back to himself. when she brings the whiskers back to the bruja, the woman explains that there is no magic spell, but that with time, and the same patience she used to get the whiskers, she can help her husband recover. 

the old woman and the devil - a brilliant old woman faces off with the devil in a bet to convince him to leave her spot in the shade. she outwits him, and undoes the harm he did as well.

duffy the lady - a version of rumplestiltskin where a housekeeper who cant knit or spin accepts a deal with a devil who will do the tasks for her for three years, if she will marry him at the end of the three years if she cannot guess his name. spoiler alert: she can. 

sister lace - a creation myth about the stars, when the emperor hears of sister lace’s incredible lace-making abilities, he has her brought to the palace and ordered to marry him. when she refuses, he has her imprisoned unless she can spin him a live rooster. her skill and blood bring the bird to life, but she remains imprisoned, until, eventually, she finds her way out. 

a marriage of two masters - a very intelligent young woman who speaks only in riddles meets a man who sees the world the same way, and as they decipher one anothers riddles, they fall in love. 

clever marcella - marcella, a genius, fascinates the prince, and they agree to marry, provided she not interfere with his rule. when she feels compelled to challenge a ridiculous ruling he made on a case, he orders her to take whatever she likes from the palace and then leave. she solves the problem as anyone in love would, compels the prince to see the error of his ways, and becomes the kingdoms chief justice.

the rebel princess - to escape an unwanted arranged marriage, judith and her ladies-in-waiting take to the open sea. when they come across a ship of pirates who decide they will each marry one of the women, the crew steal their clothes, their treasure, and their lives. by the end of the story, judith has been crowned king in place of an heir-less king who drowned.

These women are not nasty, they are not evil, they are women who were so excited to welcome their little one into this world. They are women who had a nursery set up and baby clothes bought. They are women who excitedly waited for their due date, took belly photos and updated the world on how their pregnancy was coming along. They are the women who woke up one day and felt that their baby wasn’t moving anymore. They are the women that felt in their gut that something was terribly wrong, just to have their worst fears confirmed.

They are the women who went to a regular checkup to find out that their baby is severely deformed and won’t live outside the womb, or will but only for a few days and suffer terribly the whole time. They are the women who have to make a decision to not let their baby suffer.

The remainder are performed in the 2nd trimester, generally as a result of fetal abnormality or a severe congenital defect.

The vanishingly rare 3rd trimester abortions are generally for one of two reasons:

1) the life of the mother is in serious danger 2) the fetus is either dead or dying

So no. Women aren’t just bouncing on coat-hangers at 37 weeks for a giggle, they’re undertaking a serious medical procedure for a heartbreaking reason.

If the first doctor she saw had listened to her, all that stuff might even have gotten used. But instead, the kid died that night. Her mother carried a corpse in her uterus for 3 days, running a horrible fever and coming close to organ failure.

So who is Scott Morrison?

Morrison has been representing the NSW electorate of Cook since 2007 for the Liberals.

He served under Abbott as the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection (a portfolio that would eventually be passed to Dutton). This portfolio involved the indefinite detention of refugees on Manus and Nauru.

The detention of refugees has been labelled torture and a violation of human rights by the UN

When he was immigration minister he interfered with refugees who were going to get permanent protection visas and asked ASIO to slow down their security checks so he had time to change the legislation to prevent having to grant refugees protection.

He supported Donald Trump’s Muslim ban and said it was a sign that the world was “catching up” with Australia

He used children in detention as bargaining chips to get more political power

Refugees have died under his care from poor medical treatment

A refugee had to tear out his own infected teeth due to poor medical care

The absolute cruelty of Manus and Nauru has led to high rates of depression and self harm.

The Senate gave Scott Morrison unprecedented power over Asylum Seeker’s lives, including the ability to ignore international law, previously agreed human rights obligations, to send Asylum Seekers back to countries where it is known they’ll be tortured even though every other country recognises this as wrong, turn back boats and ignore them, and he could block any protection claim for whatever reason (which he did not need to divulge why) and his decisions couldn’t be challenged.

Outside of harming refugees he’s also been doing some horrible things for Australians:

He wanted to drug test sewage to see if people on welfare were on drugs

He voted no in the plebiscite

He attacked a Muslim child for practicing their religion

He spent millions to erect a statue of James Cook in his own electorate

Scrapped funding for homelessness services

Getting rid of penalty rates (which low income earners need to get by)

Making it harder to get Australian citizenship

Voted against investment into renewable energy (so is weak on climate change)

Voted against protecting the great barrier reef (which is dying from climate change)

Voted against increased media diversity (which suits him fine as the Murdoch media empire is pro-Liberal)

This is what we believe. This is our rallying cry. This is our movement  — and we’re not backing down. 

A proposed Trump/Pence policy is attempting to take away your basic rights. We have until July 31 to submit comments against this gag rule that violates medical ethics. The gag rule would:

Impose new rules designed to make it impossible for millions of patients to get birth control or preventive care from Planned Parenthood.

Under this rule, doctors, nurses, hospitals, and community health centers across the country would no longer be able to refer their patients for safe, legal abortion.

Remove the guarantee that you’re getting full and accurate information about your health care from your doctor. For nearly two decades, Title X law has been clear: Health care providers cannot withhold information from you about your pregnancy options. This rule means they can.

Delete the requirement that contraception provided be medically approved, and no longer directs providers to ensure you have access to the full range of birth control.

Queen Amina of zazzau

she was born in 1533 in precolonial Nigeria.

She expanded the territory of the Hausa people to its largest borders in history. Muhammad bello (the earliest historical source) claimed she was the first to establish government among the hausa lands in northern Nigeria.

Her father’s reign was known for peace and prosperity, Amina chose to hone her military skills from the warriors of the Zazzau military. As a result, she emerged as leader of the Zazzau cavalry and became a great military strategist.

She led her first military charge a few months after assuming power. For the rest of her 34 year reign which was a period of uninterrupted war, she continued to fight and expand her kingdom to its greatest in history. She personally led an army of 20,000 men to numerous battles. The objective of her conquest was not on annexation of neighboring lands but forcing local rulers to accept vassal status and allow Hausa traders safe passage.

Amina brought unheard wealth to the land, gold, new crops eg she introduced kola nuts into the region, and because her people were talented metal workers, Amina introduced metal armor, including iron helmets and chain mail, to her army. 

Amina is also credited as the architect of the strong earthen walls around the city, which became the prototype for the fortifications used in all Hausa states. She built many of these fortifications, later known as ganuwar Amina or ‘Amina’s walls’, around various conquered cities. she fortified each of her military camps with the walls and later towns and villages sprung up within these protective barriers, Many of these walls remain in existence to this day. The walls provided security, definition to settlement and protected hausa markets from threat. Also, politically, walls were considered prestigious, their size a measure of a ruler’s ability to command the labour of his or her subjects.

She was loved by her people, is subject to a lot of legends and her exploits earned her the moniker Amina, daughter of Nikatau, a woman as capable as a man.
