Buckβs heard that second births are supposed to be a lot faster, but apparently no one told the baby that. Itβs 22 hours before Baby Han arrives, seven pounds, six ounces, thick patch of dark hair. Maddie and Chimney barely had time to finish counting fingers and toes before the rest of the 118, nervously waiting in the hallway with balloons and flowers, piled into the room to meet the newest little member of the station.
They only stay for a few minutes; Maddie has to rest, and the four Hans do need some actual time as a family on their own. But Buck was in a celebratory mood, so once he and Eddie got home, they bring out Eddieβs nice whiskey to celebrate. Not to get wasted; they have work tomorrow, and Buckβs not in his twenties anymore. But Buck drinks just enough to let his edges go a little fuzzy.
Maybe a little too much.
Thatβs probably why he says it. Heβs in bed with Eddie (itβs been a month since he came back, and theyβre still sharing a bed, which isβBuck knows itβs weird. He knows, okay?) and as happy as the day has been, as overjoyed as he is for Chim and Maddie and Jee, when he lies down itβs like every ugly, nagging feeling he hasnβt paid attention to all day comes rushing to the surface. Every whatβs wrong with me and why does no one want this with me threatening to spill out of the corners of his eyes. The room is dark, but he throws his arm up over his eyes anyway. Addresses the ceiling.
βI want a baby.β
As soon as he says it, Buck hears how pathetic it sounds. He hopes Eddie is asleep already.
No such luck. Eddie rolls over onto his side toward Buck. βYeah?β
Buck sniffsβJesus, is he getting teary? βYeah. Sorry, I know I sound stupid. Just everything todayββ
βI donβt think you sound stupid, Buck,β Eddie says quietly. βI thinkβyouβre allowed to want that.β
Buck swipes at his nose. βYeah, no, I mean. Itβs not like my biological clock is literally ticking, like it is for women or whatever. But I just turned 34, and I donβt know. I thought it wouldβve happened by now. And even if I meet someone tomorrow, by the time we actually got around to getting married and having a baby, thatβs still years away. Andβ¦I want it.β Buckβs voice cracks. βI want it really bad.β
A light pressure on his wristβEddieβs moving the hand thatβs covering Buckβs face. He drops Buckβs arm down onto the pillow, but keeps his fingers pressing to the inside of his wrist. Where youβd take a pulse. βOkay,β Eddie murmurs. βOkay, letβs have a baby.β
Buck turns over to stare. βEddie.β
βWhat?β
A hysterical laugh bubbles up inside Buck. βIβwe arenβt together.β
Eddie shrugs minutely. βYou want a baby. I could have a baby.β
βWhat exactly are you offering here? Because last I checked, itβs not exactly as simple as one of us getting knocked upββ
Eddie shrugs again. Buckβs eyes have adjusted enough to see that he looks infuriatingly calm. βWeβll adopt. Or something. Weβll figure it out.β
Buck feels lightheaded. βI donβt think adoption agencies are big fans of two random best friends deciding to raise a baby together.β
βSo weβll get married,β Eddie says casually. Like itβs not completely insane. βIf thatβs what we need to do.β
βIβ¦β Buck shakes his head like heβs trying to clear an Etch-A-Sketch. βI canβt ask you to do that.β
βYouβre not asking,β Eddie says, rubbing his thumb along Buckβs wrist. βIβm offering.β
βBut why? Why would youββ
βBecause you want a baby,β Eddie says. βAnd I want you to have what you want.β
Buck shakes his head. βThatβs notββ
βAnd,β Eddie continues. βI love being a dad, and I know youβd be a really good dad.β He laughs through his nose. βPractically are one to Chris already, anyway. So.β
βSo,β Buck repeats stupidly. Trying to wrap his head around it.
βSo,β Eddie confirms. βSo letβs have a baby.β
And the fucked-up part is that insane as this conversation is, Buck can see it all so clearly. Midnight feedings and diaper changes. Installing a car seat in the back of the Prius. Eddie in the kitchen in the early morning, bathed in golden light, drinking his coffee with a sleepy baby in his arms. A ring on his finger, even if Eddieβs straight, even if itβs just for show. Because Eddieβs offering a lot, but heβs not offeringβthat, exactly. But itβs okay. Buck will take what he can get.
Itβs not the precise life Buck wouldβve pictured. But maybe itβs close enough.
βOkay,β Buck whispers. βOkay, letβs have a baby.β
Eddie nods sleepily. βLetβs have a baby,β he says, yawning. βGβnight, Buck.β
βGood night, Eddie,β Buck says. He swallows hard and rolls onto his back again. He already knows he wonβt be sleeping.
