just realised that i never actually drew papa salieri and little schubert together before. oh well some doodles of the duo :>
Almost nothing delights me more than seeing Salieri gain traction on youtube.
Antonio Salieri:
Likely had a cordial relationship with Mozart IRL, he even took copies of Mozart's work with him during travels to expand Mozart's career. Although Wolfgang played to his father's xenophobia in letters it is suggested Mozart had an equal respect for Salieri, and they met somewhat frequently outside of their usual court work. They shared at least one composition dedicated to the health of one of their mutual pupils as she was recovering. Likewise, many swapped and shared motifs can be heard throughout their works.
Mozart is likely thought to have died of tainted meat from recent studies, most likely bad pork combined with exposure and already frail health, not to mention his general emotional state. Things with Constanze, his career, his family, and other things were in varying states of disaster. Salieri lamented his death. In a fevered outburst after a suspicious visit Salieri made his crazed claim and tried to slit his own throat, however, his whereabouts at the time, lucid moments after the incident, and many other factors made this impossible. His words could have also meant anything, as he grew quite depressed following the younger composer's death, and proceeded to take a special interest in the security of Mozart's family. It was discarded by all who knew him, including Mozart's family, and authorities, but unfortunately it was enough for sensationalists.
Never requested or asked for pay from his general students. His students and those who knew him adored him, if you could get past the heavy mix of his native Italian, local German, and whatever other language he decided to throw into the conversation. He wrote operas in at least four and spoke additional.
Once destroyed a piano in secret to get it replaced with a more functional one. He did this by climbing inside and jumping up and down.
Was the instructor of Beethoven, Schubert, Süssmayr, Franz Mozart, and many others. He is an extremely important figure situated between the classical and romantic period. For a long time he was lost to a mixture of history and slander, and thanks to that slander remains largely disregarded by all those who turn a jaded, deaf ear and prefer fiction to fact.
Wrote over 80 operas and literally hundreds of works, a large majority of which sit in the Vienna library. These are slowly trickling out to the public, finally.
Was a skilled vocalist, violinist, and pianist, likely among other instruments. His vocal range was said to be extraordinary. He was also educated in dance.
Unlike the play, Salieri was devout in his faith regardless of hardships or jests. Curiously for the time, he abstained from most things including drink, said to drink only water, and stayed from other indulgences common of the era. He did have a somewhat wicked sense of humor, but delightfully so.
Just jumping on the second point here, but Salieri's "claim" is still considered an hear say. He denied having ever made this claim for the rest of his life, his loved ones denied it as well, and when interned (is that the right word?) his nurses denied having heard him say anything like this, which is strange considering that, at that point, Salieri was in the worst of places mentally, and getting closer to death every day. It is also still unclear who supposedly heard him say anything like this, as most people who believed the rumor claimed that they knew someone who knew someone who had heard him (without providing names), but I don't think there ever was anyone who directly claimed to have heard him say anything of the sort?
As for the suicide attempt, the chronology is very unclear and doesn't make much sense. It still likely happened when he was interned apparently, since people who visited him didn't make notice of any scar until I believe 1824 (so months before he was admitted, since he was admitted in October 1823)
Still, my heart is full of joy knowing the man is finally getting some positive attention, I love him and he deserves the world, History was unfair to him
So, I never post anything online. I'm not sure yet why I'm so apprehensive when it comes to that. But anyway.
I had these drawings on Salieri and Mozart. (The actual ones-)
The one with the gondola was my friend's suggestion, and the rest I just went overboard with. They're also supposed to be younger in the second one.

Enjoy!
