having a headache while hydrated is so unfair. you were supposed to protect me.
I wasn't gonna allow June to pass without me drawing a killer whale, so here's a painting of K20 Spock for Orca Action Month. She has been my favorite Southern Resident ever since I learned about her, mostly because her appearance challenges what many expect a female orca to look like, showing that biology is far more complex than just a simple binary. Her dorsal fin and pectoral flippers are nowhere near as large as that of an adult male, but I can absolutely see why she was mistaken for a male for so long. She definitely has the proportions of a sprouting male.
Finding a fresh new daydreaming plot is honestly the best feeling.

Anyone can be discarded by society
People get made fun of for being scared of aging but it comes from the very real fear of being discarded by society that’s why i always say the goal is not to never become old or disabled the future comes for us all the goal is better social policy
"enjoy it while it lasts" (undercuts itself, needlessly doomerish, foreboding)
"enjoy it!" (straight to the point, actually encourages enjoying it)
"enjoy last it'll it" (what)
I still dream of one day coming home and finding him standing there waiting for me
Let’s all actually do this

the oceangate rabbithole is un-fucking-paralleled. what do you mean they left that thing outside in the snow in canada for the entire fucking winter. of course it imploded literally the next time they put it in the water. holy shit.
there's a video now of the moment it imploded where the topside ship hears this incredibly loud bang from outside the ship (ie, not on monitoring or microphones) and that's bad in itself but the only reason the people topside didn't freak out more was because the exact same thing had happened 8 dives earlier on dive 80. and they also knew using their own monitoring systems that the bang they heard had fucked the hull in some capacity. and then they still left it outside for the entire winter.
they tested the tin can carbon fiber hull with people inside it. not even oceangate people. regular civilians. after their first test model had imploded.
STOCKTON RUSH DESCRIBED THE TERRIFYING POPPING AND CRACKING SOUNDS AS THE HULL BEING "SEASONED" BY THE CARBON FIBERS. LIKE A CAST IRON PAN. LIKE A WOK. SEASONED.
EVERYONE ELSE: No it's not seasoning, all damage to carbon fiber is cumulative, it's getting weaker every time. A well designed metal hull can, to some extent, come close to failing and still be fine as long as it didn't actually fail. Carbon fiber just gets worse and worse and keeps breaking down in microscopic ways. That's why we don't use it for submarines.
STOCKTON RUSH: I'm innovating!
The use of carbon fiber doesn't seem to be inherently absurd, so blaming that specifically may not be appropriate. (However, even the company described in that link has yet to use its products for human occupancy, despite their optimism for the material's potential.) Many efforts to make anything cheaper do in some sense involve "cutting corners", but if you're actually smart, competent, and diligent, you can cut in the right places.
The general safety culture of OceanGate suggest to me that they would inevitably have fucked up just as badly with steel or titanium. The normalization of deviance in regard to signs of damage described above is one example. To cite another off the top of my head, the carbon fiber hulls were not fabricated with any regard to foreign material exclusion, a critical point in a thin laminated material. Another is that their total investment in a single vehicle made full scale destructive testing impossible.
Pictured: result of a destructive pressure test of another company's carbon fiber pressure vessel.

crabs are so gentle, they can be so kind. their claws? precise little things, so careful in the sand, so careful with food. they do what they must to live and wave their claws to express their joy to the world for giving so much to them, for giving such kindness to these creatures known as crabs. please be gentle to crabs
