Haunted - Shawn Mendes Werewolf AU

So thanks, to my amazing roommates for helping me power-through writing this and for letting me bounce ideas off of you. Thanks for sitting with me for three hours editing this so I could post tonight.
The kitchen counter bit into the small of her back as she leaned away from him. He took careful steps toward her. How close would he get? She didn’t want him to stop but she would never say a word. He lied to her. She found herself feeling anxious about what was going to happen. She had called him to talk things over, but he said he’d rather talk in person because it had been weeks since the day they last spoke, the day of Shawn’s 18th birthday.
“I don’t want you to be scared of me” he whispers underneath his breath.
“I’m not scared of you, Shawn,” she explains shaking her head and pushing off the counter. She could have sworn that he could hear her heartbeat from there, she needed him to know the truth.
His warm, hazel eyes search hers for any sign forgiveness, for any sign at all really. He took another cautious step forward.
Doubt, hit her like a freight train. She shouldn’t have brought him here. She focuses on her breathing, thinking it might help her relax. It doesn’t.
“Because, I didn’t understand what was happening! Suddenly you were looking at me like I was a totally different person, and you were growling. What was I supposed to do?”
She hated how beautiful he was. It was particularly frustrating in this moment. She found it hard to demand the truth from someone that she wanted to rip the clothes off of.
“Maybe I wouldn’t have run if you had told me sooner! Like I was obviously going to find out! What were you waiting for?” She fumes, getting caught up in the moment. She takes in a deep breath trying to calm her nerves.
“You have to understand that it was overwhelming for me to find out like that,” she further explains. “Maybe if you had told me in private before the party, we would have been able to figure out what this was before everyone found out all at once,” she hesitates for a second, “I just feel like you kept something really important from me, and I’m really hurt. Do you not trust me?”
He should have figured it out sooner. She was perfect for him. She was the only girl to challenge him, provoke him and argue with him, instead of falling at his feet. She drove him wild and he should have told her sooner.
“Of course I trust you. I would have told you had I known,” he starts to defend himself but she cuts him off again, “Bullshit! You knew as well as I did and you never said anything! I lived with that for so long, feeling this connection between us, and thinking I was insane for looking at you as anything more than a friend!”
“Well, then why didn’t you say anything?” He shouts back, letting his anger get the best of him. She didn’t back down though, knowing this was just the adrenaline talking and knowing that if this was going to work out they needed to communicate, even if they had to raise their voices.
“Because, I didn’t know how you felt! I am just a human, I don’t know what having a mate is like! That’s supposed to be your area of expertise. You’re a fucking Alpha, Shawn! Act like one!”
His eyes changed from the warm, hazel that she was used to, to a vibrant honey. It was clear that something animalistic had taken over him. He stalked closer, her confident demeanor somehow fading for a moment, before she pipes up again, adding fuel to the already raging fire between them.
“Why are you even here, Shawn?”
“I want to haunt you, like you haunt me,” he explains. She shivers at the way he growls that at her.
“For weeks now, I haven’t been able to sleep without seeing your face, ” he spoke softly stepping closer to her. His actions were impulsive and unpredictable due to the lack of sleep, and to say it intrigued her was an understatement. Her heart was racing at his confession.
“You haunt my dreams…” He pauses for a moment collecting himself in his frustrations. “Every dream is worse than the last. You’re always in danger but I can never get to you, to save you and protect you… Until I tell you how I feel… And that always proves to be the scariest thing of all,” his demeanor changes, his voice fading out softer and softer as the realizations start pouring out of his mouth faster than he can stop them.
“So, is that what you’re finally doing now then? Telling me how you feel?” Her heart felt heavy as she drew deep breaths. She knew that this was it. There was no going back from here. If she opened the gate, all the emotions she had let build up for so long we’re going to come flooding in, drowning her in the process. She knew she was fucked.
“You know I can’t do that!” He exclaims, tormented and frustrated. He huffs in anger, hanging his head. She didn’t mean to taunt him, she just wanted to know what he was thinking. She never meant to challenge him, but she always managed to find a way to.
“I’ve never been good at explaining how I feel, obviously, considering I already avoided it for so long,” he tries to say, but he finds the words tumbling out too fast to make sense of them. She was the only one to make him feel so nervous and frustrated at the same time, and it was driving him mad.
“So, why don’t you show me then?”
“You heard me… If what you’re feeling is so scary, Shawn… If it’s so real and profound that you can’t even explain yourself… Then please, by all means, show me,” she wagers. She’s done it now. She’s challenged an Alpha into showing he loves his mate. He takes her face in his hands bringing her close. She could smell his minty breath wafting over her as her eyes searched his for answers.
“You need to be careful. If you keep poking the wolf, it might just bite you.”
