Imagine being an alcoholic and you’re surrounded by people who will give you everything you want forever and call it love. No matter how selfish or inconvenient or stupid. They have your wife’s memories but they can’t be her. Your wife wouldn’t love you like this.

I think a lot of people want to be “loved” in the way the Hive “loves”, and that’s why they’re so quick to villainize Helen for trying to mitigate Carol’s self-destructive tendencies.

The Hive offers complete permissibility in their love. Unconditional, yes, but also uncritical. They will make attempts at harm reduction (re: the heroin scene), but they will ultimately not stop her from harming herself. The liquor is still in her house despite the Hive having access to Helen’s memory of Carol’s alcohol addiction, she is allowed to take potentially lethal drugs without supervision.

Zosia is the ultimate example of this. She acquiesces to Carol’s every whim, going so far as to allow Carol to emotionally self harm with her insistence on the facade that she (Zosia) is an Individual. Stursia is built on lust and a desperate, grieving woman looking for a love that will shake her by the shoulders and tell her to get her act together, the way Helen would. What Carol gets is a love that removes all the guardrails in her life, and lets her go through hell on a motorbike with the brakes cut by Carol herself.

western media reviewing pluribus: in the collectivist cultures of The East, which place no value on individuality, the hivemind would not be understood as horrific uniformity but as a vision of harmony. the genius of the show is in gradually making us realize carol's resistance to the diverse and global hive is grounded in her ideological corruption by individualist capitalism and privileged position as an american white woman. i am very smart.

the japanese and chinese reviews i just looked up in like five minutes with google translate: the insidious hive is an obvious metaphor for western cultural imperialism and its determination to erase global diversity. love the subversion of making this english-speaking white person a victim of metaphorical colonialism for once, the shoe's on the other foot now huh carol? bit too on the nose to name the show after a latin word written on american dollars though

the entire kusimayu scene was devastating but to me the worst part was that by Joining she not only lost her individuality but her culture died with her. immediately the hivemind stopped chanting and singing and speaking the quechuan language and rolled up their blankets and packed up their things and walked away. the animals were set free and the goat that kusimayu had been cradling so lovingly just minutes earlier chased after the hivemind wearing kusimayu's body and bleated for attention and love and got none because there is no one left to care specifically enough to give it.
