Imo the “bad boy who’s only nice secretly/after you get through his layers” trope in media functions as propaganda designed to get you to second guess yourself and your experiences in order to give bad men a chance. Some things need to be taken at face value and if he treats people like shit he is in fact a bad person even if he’s nice to you sometimes. Stop looking for hidden meaning and depth in his actions. Before that: freeloader who happens to be the Crown Prince/King's best friend.
Before becoming an official Council member in TRR3 Drake served informally as Liam's emotional and mental health support person and advisor. He dropped out of college and sacrificed his independence to do so, and received the use of one of the palace's many bedrooms, food, and transportation to wherever Liam needs him in return. If that makes him a freeloader then I guess anyone irl who forgoes formal employment to care for a loved one is a freeloader too. I personally think his contribution is valid and worthwhile, and canonically, so does King Liam. I'm puzzled that people think room and board is somehow overcompensation.
ETA, I suppose it's understandable people think that when they haven't seen the restaurant scene in Italy where key parts of this are discussed.
I agree. It is a legitimate job. No one talks smack about the dogs that get free room and board. Not to mention free food and plane rides to anywhere in the world.
