One of the largest projects I've been working on is this typeset and book version of 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors, one of my very favorite video games. (Which later became the first game in the Zero Escape franchise.)

The game is a visual novel and escape room game combo with multiple routes and endings leading to a true ending. So this version is structured like a Choose-your-own-Adventure book where you flip to different pages depending on your choices.

I also made it possible to skip all the less linear escape/puzzle sequences because they don't read very cohesively. But they do contain a lot of funny or revealing lines so I didn't want to eliminate them entirely.

I should also mention one of the reasons for doing this is that I wanted to preserve the original text of the game from the Nintendo DS version from 2010. When it was remastered/ported to PC and Switch a lot of the dialogue was rewritten very much for the worse. As well as making the novel sections optional, which destroys a lot of the point and atmosphere of the game.

The book is a full leather casebind, with stenciled titles. The leather was honestly a little too thick and required a lot of paring, which is terrifying because any slip could ruin it. And the final satin finish I put on made a lot of the leather flaws look worse and more obvious, which is annoying. It was my first time doing faux raised bands on the spine, and they came out nice.

My printer decided to fuck with me while printing this one and the color alignment is off. This is my second attempt at printing it and it's better than the first but still not great. But I wasn't gonna waste so much paper again.

And no, I'm not planning on doing the sequels. I can't imagine trying to deal with VLR's 28 endings when doing 6 was this challenging and annoying. And the sequels are perfectly represented by their existing playable versions, unlike 999.

What gets me is that Tuvok was actually assimilated. Like, the others had their magical neural suppressant or whatever and that's the handwave for why they weren't hugely transformed by the experience in the way that, say, Picard or Seven of Nine were (though it still doesn't explain why they weren't traumatized by, you know, having massively invasive surgeries performed on them without anesthetic); but Tuvok was *actually* absorbed into the Hivemind; he actually became a Borg and went around calling himself "Three of Twelve". But whatever; he's Vulcan; he just buries the life-altering experience, and nobody ever discusses it with him. It just gets added to the soup of rage and trauma that he has perpetually boiling beneath a paper thin façade of Vulcan logic. It's all good. Whatever.

Voyager's an episodic show, I get it, but come ON, we could have, dare I say SHOULD have, had at least a short arc, a scene at least, of Tuvok maybe, going to Seven of Nine for counsel in processing this?

I don't think Tuvok would like, openly ask for her help, not like a human crewmember might. I think, if anything, he'd approach her about the technical side of things - I like to think that all three of the crew assimilated during Unimatrix Zero retained some amount of Borg tech on the inside, despite outward appearances - so maybe he asks Seven if she thinks he'd physically recover faster if he attempted Borg regeneration, or something, and then (in his Vulcan way) segues the conversation into one of the mental afteraffects of being a part of the Borg?

Listen, I just want some trope reversal here. I want Seven - previously having looked to Tuvok to help integrate into the crew - to help Tuvok now re-integrate after his own incredibly jarring experience. I'm not saying Mr. Vulcan has to re-learn how to eat or anything drastic like Seven does, but still, Borg assimilation is Borg assimilation; dude's gotta have at least a bit of processing to do.

And hell, if Voyager were a serialized show like DS9 I feel like we could've gotten a nice season-long or half-season-long B-plot out of Seven helping the crew re-adapt, at least physically in the case of the other two. Some thoughts on that:

Janeway is the most resilient of the bunch overall, she's been through a lot of shit, but it proves good bonding between the Captain and Seven (J7 shippers come get y'all juice); B'Elanna at first violently rejects Seven's offer for help (ever the independent Klingon at heart) but warms to her and in the end admits she could use the advice, and it proves a nice tender sort of "we're not so different, you and I" moment (B7 shippers you know I got you too); Tuvok holds firm and cool and calm and Vulcan until he finally can't, and he just, breaks, full crying, yelling, Vulcan-character-when-they-fucking-lose-it moment because the Borg absolutely fucked his shit UP. And Seven is there for him, she's able to advise him that it will pass, that these feelings of pain and fear and longing and 'why do I miss it that is illogical' are to be expected, that he is not a failure for falling victim to the Borg nor for experiencing trauma because of it

Okay, but check out this video from mid-May 2022 of a Kestrel Dad who just kept piling up voles and mice beside his babies when the mom was injured/killed/mia’d by owls…but then watched one of his babies just swallow a lizard and went “OH. I can feed them small food!” and learned to tear it apart!

UPDATE: Not only has Mister Kes learned to feed his chicks all on his own…

….the three chicks who were taken out of the nest for intensive care after the mom disappeared were put back in, and he just started feeding them, too.

He’s a single father of six who does not possess the instincts to feed even one of his offspring, but he learned and adopted that behavior without difficulty and is now hunting and providing for six kids all on his own.
