"Shooting stars through my back"
⋆°• ☁︎ - A first impression (and confession) with the Captain of the First Division.
Feat. Gen Narumi
AN: This was something I cooked up a few days ago and just totally forgot to post<3
Was there any way that this time could speed up? You knew that being stuck in a lecture room as they explained in the worst detail ever about the newest numbers and raising numbers of Kaiju was going to be boring, but lord… you didn’t think that it was gonna be this bad! Yet worst of all was the annoying kid sitting behind you, it wasn’t that he was doing anything per se to actually annoy you out of everybody, but the way he carried himself was the worst part about it. Of course, nobody knew the whole story about how he was recruited, it’s not like you had ever seen him in any of the junior training camps, at least not looking and acting the way he was now, but based on the rumors you had heard, he was some orphaned kid that managed to kill a kaiju and they recruited him from that, and it was all just luck (or the second running rumor that Shinomiya had helped him in some way) that got him into the defense force, but that was all shut down by one of the other people in your class, Mina, who had actually seen him take the exam and knew there was just plain skill that he had, despite the brash and hostile personality he had.
The meeting soon continued to drag and drag on as they tried to come up with some solutions, even though everything that had been mentioned was promptly shut down, or used in the more “important” people meeting they had held earlier in the day. You already know that the real reason Mina hasn’t said anything was because she was at the important one, along with that other kid, Narumi, or so you thought, it’s not like many people said his name unless it was to talk shit about him behind his back, and most of the time it normally didn’t include his real name. There was always a sense of irk that followed his name when you had heard it mentioned, not because you had any reason to hate him, but due to the mystery behind it all. It wasn’t often that the defense force would just hire some random highschool aged kid off the streets. There had to be something really special about this guy that just nobody knew. And maybe if this meeting had been more engaging you wouldn’t have had the time to sit and think about it.
Meeting upon meeting had followed the first one, another one soon after about the increasing Kaiju, and even more about the safety, especially following the first mission that Narumi had been on. But one after one, once Narumi was finally fully allowed to stay in the first division. Maybe the people were either pissed off, seeing as the biggest threat and a-hole was staying in the division, but there were a few of the people that didn’t really care, I mean he was just some guy they found. But this was the greatest thing for you, there had already been talks about the fact that Narumi had been using Kaiju no.1 to fight that Honju, and that was when you finally realized it. He was special, and yet everybody cracked it up to just the fact that he was annoying and that it was all just a stupid rumor, there was almost no way that some new officer would have been allowed to use a custom weapon made from the body of a kaiju like that.
When you had started getting deep into the rumors circulating him it was all cracked up to the fact that he was …weird, and mysterious and you just wanted to know about the people you would have had to fight side by side with, and nothing else. Not the fact that you thought something was interesting about him past the fact that he was in the first division and there was something else that you could figure out about him in terms of what he was like in the past, or where he had come from, maybe even something pertaining more towards what he liked so you could be friends with him…? No way! It would be crazy if anybody thought that!
Okay, yeah…
For lack of better terms, you were down bad for the random, brash, and childish officer… and nobody could save you now.
Little would you have ever known that the real reason he had even been at that meeting, or any meeting-training- or even lunch, was because he knew that you were gonna be there. In the end, he was probably just as busy trying to understand you, but not like he’d ever let you know that. Every time the two of you happened to be in the same area at the same time, and were caught in the act of trying to learn more about each other, let's just say… it really was awkward.
But as more and more time passed there was a scarcity in the amount of information you could get without just speaking to him, luckily, this was sound the time that he was climbing the ranks, he was pretty good after all, even with his shitty personality. So what better way than to try and talk to him, than starting up a conversation about the fact that he was getting promoted? I mean, seriously, what could go wrong?
Everything.
Everything you had worked so hard to keep contained from the now, captain, went tumbling out in the form of words. Too bad, it wasn’t from your mouth. But none other than the one friend that you had entrusted this crush to, and now they had thrown you under the bus like some kaiju body.
But it was the most shocking surprise when Narumi had just laughed at the mentions of what you had mentioned to your friend, all before his laughing was cut off by Hasegawa, his new vice-captain, but also the man who had been his platoon leader for a while. Who had made quite a bit of mention of all the times that Narumi had come over to Hasegawa to offhandedly ask about you, or how you were doing, or even things about where you had come from and what you were like before the defense force, which after a while and his patience being whittled down by the officer, he finally started to tell him. But what made it all worth it was when Hasegawa finally understood why he was so desperate to figure it all out. It wasn't because he saw you as a rival, but rather as somebody he wanted to get along with and somebody he wanted to understand better, which in all his time knowing Narumi, it seemed next to impossible.
You must have been something special.
And now the both of you stood there, shocked at the fact that not only one of you had been doing the digging, but you both were. Instead of just avoiding the whole thing and talking to each other like both your friend and Hasegawa had given as advice on a multitude of occasions across the weeks and even months that this had been going on. There were even times when the platoon leaders had personally set it up so the two of you would be together for a drill or something of the sort and yet the two of you still wouldn’t speak to each other, even if your body movements had been almost perfectly in line with the other.
It was almost scary how well the two of you had matched up, not only in tactics but in something that almost never could be matched up with, fighting.
Nicknames were going around about the two of you when people started to figure out how similar the two of you were, all of which never made it to the ears of either you or Narumi, which might have been for the best, or else there would have never been the scene in front of everybody currently. The scene hadn’t lasted that long before somebody had come over to direct the whole room onto Narumi, who was still standing there shocked even after you had been moved from the area by your “friend”.
Yeah, there would be a conversation with them later on, but that could wait until after.
The celebration had only gone on for about 30 more minutes before Hasegawa pulled you to the side, saying it was something that the captain had requested. So you stood outside, waiting, for who you assumed would be the old captain, just to be surprised by Narumi walking out. Of course, he would be using the title already.
It was a short minute before he had fully made his way over towards you, leaning his forearms against the railing that you had just been doing the same too, only for him to not say anything and just look up at the sky above, the moonlight framing the area around you two.
“…The moon is beautiful, isn’t it…”
That was the final notion, there was the final thing that had to be said before every barrier between the two of you had been broken, and for the walls on both hearts to come crashing down.
You turned over your shoulder to face him and agreed, and there it was, the first time that you had seen the captain actually let out a genuine smile, it was something that you would never forget, just like the way that he had taken his hand in yours and right before it could lead to anything else, Director Shinomiya had to walk out calling for Narumi…
You could only slightly smile when he had given the director a furious look, but it didn’t last long before he had sighed, your hands still in his.
“…You’re not getting out of this that easy…”
He smirked before laying a kiss on the back of one of your hands, before letting it fall from his own as he walked back inside, making side comets here and there towards Shinomiya about how he “ruined the moment”.
Little would the two of you ever know that Shinomiya had been on the sidelines slightly cheering you on. Please, the two of you would have never been matched up for anything if it wasn’t for his order, and maybe in the future he would have had to have a talk with Narumi about the dangers of it all, but that could wait for another day.
Narumi’s little meeting with the director ended no more than 10 minutes late, was it because the newly appointed captain had been rushing him almost the whole time so he could get back to you…? He says it wasn’t but Shinomiya is more likely to tell the truth than he ever would.
But by the time he was able to find you again, there was a final crash of the day that flooded over the both of you, and with nothing else better to do you headed back to your room, and instead of Narumi heading back to his, he couldn’t help but follow you, almost like a puppy of sorts. and normally it would be against conduct for you to even suggest letting him in, but at this point, you were too tired to care.
And that was how you ended up waking up first thing in the morning to the sounds of people rushing around and yelling Narumi’s name, just to realize that you had been safely tucked between his arms the whole time.
Maybe next week, you should send a test or something to somebody saying that Narumi didn’t just randomly go missing.
