i dont think that deadlock ever leaves drift, and i think that ratchet is the one who helps him accept that and come to terms with the fact that it's 'okay' to still keep apart of deadlock with him. deadlock was created out of desperation, and an inherent desire to never be oppressed/held down again. deadlock was a promise to drift, that he would never let anyone use him or his body against his consent. deadlock was who liberated him, and when he became his own person. deadlock did awful, terrible things, but ratchet lets drift know that deadlock was a necessity. something
the idea is "we can't condone/excuse the violence you caused, but deadlock was integral to your identity, and i know you still struggle with him. it's okay to still, feel him sometimes. just as long as you don't hurt people".
and that's something that drift takes to heart. that it's okay not to forget the identity that literally saved him.
to drift, deadlock and ratchet are important because they both saved him, they both liberated him. and he can't live without either of them. so he finds a way to balance drift and deadlock, thanks to ratchet.

Deadlock had buried his face enthusiastically into Ratchet's valve as soon as he got him on the berth, so he took a while to notice.
Ratchet took time to get wet enough for anything involving his valve that was more strenuous than getting eaten out. Or at least that was Deadlock's excuse for how long he spent on it- even when Ratchet started grumbling about letting him do something this century. It usually got Deadlock a poke in the optic and comment about overestimating how impressive his spike was.
Anyway, Deadlock had spent the last few minutes licking furiously into Ratchet's slit, making sure to get the angle just right so Ratchet could grind down against his nose when he liked. And so Deadlock thought he could be forgiven for not noticing the pitted, unpainted marks at first. It wasn't until he surfaced to ask Ratchet if he wanted it on his front or back this time that Deadlock noticed them still there on the plating of Ratchet's neck, and froze in the act of wiping his mouth.
"Doc," he said, clambering over to run one damp finger along the little toothmarks. "You kept them?" The actual holes had healed up, but Ratchet hadn't done his touch up or buffed them out; and there they were. Two rows, barely visible.
"Get your sticky hands off my plating," Ratchet said. Deadlock hummed and leaned in to lick it clean. He probably couldn't actually feel the difference in texture. Too small. But his processor told him he could.
Ratchet didn't object when he sank his teeth back in, lined up perfectly. Just brought one hand up to cradle his head there in the crook of his neck.

Drift has (1) marketable skill, and that’s killing people. That’s it. Other bots, they’ve got stuff they did before the war, like interior design or news reporting or stand up comedy. Back then, Drift was also still just killing people. He just got lucky, where the job market became entirely tailored to his single marketable skill for four million years straight and that’s why he made bank
The apology is for killing people
Couldn’t help but notice some meta discussion pop up in the tags!
Drift was homeless and a drug addict before the war, yes. But before he met Megatron, there was an event where a friend of his, Gasket, was killed by the police which prompted Drift to kill said police in turn. That led him to be recruited into Cybertron’s underworld where he worked as an assassin, and that work as an assassin was what led Megatron to recruit him into the Decepticons.
So he’s been doing the same thing for something like five million years straight, no Megatron needed.
Drift not being able to read pre-war is fanon! A fun bit of fanon I’m particularly fond of, but fanon nonetheless.
We’re actually never given a reason why Drift is good at writing speeches. He just is. If you want to extrapolate on his close relationship with Megatron that’s shown in the Drift miniseries, you could assume that it’s because he was around Megatron enough that he’d been given plenty of opportunity to read/listen to Megatron’s writing and gained an idea of what a good speech is from that. Or a good influencer apology video hah
(My personal headcanon was that as the war went on, Drift ended up shifting from being someone Megatron would use as a sounding board b/c he valued Drift’s opinion, to an editor for Megatron’s speeches, to actually ghost writing some speeches when the war escalated to the point that Megatron no longer had time/desire to write things himself. I.e. when he began to really lose his way, which made for a notable disharmony between what he said in the speeches Deadlock penned in younger-Megatron’s voice and what Megatron now did.)
This brings up the question: Does Megatron recall Drift’s style of writing well enough that when he comes across the speeches Drift wrote for Rodimus that Megatron instantly pegs them as Drift’s work? 🤔
Hhhh I love that idea… on the flip side I’ve always been of the opinion that Drift would’ve heard the speech Optimus wrote for Megatron to give at his trial and immediately known it wasn’t Megatron’s writing
Okay but this works even better because I talked to JRo at a con about whether the shadowplay had fucked up Megatron’s ability to write, and he said it HAD, so very possibly Drift wrote even more of Megatron’s speeches than he got credit for…
Ok but a con hearing one of rodi’s speaches and freaking out because “he sounds like megatron did” but it was drift
i dont know what im doing so i cant draw good 💀
