The Stockholm Public Library was designed and built between 1918 and 1928, and represents one of Gunnar Asplund's most important architectural works. The building is strictly geometrical in design with a square base and a cylindrical central volume, containing the central hall, rising up high in the middle. In each of the four wings of the square base are different rooms designated for specialized literature, children’s literature, newspapers, study halls and offices. “Stockholm Public Library was Sweden’s first public library to apply the principle of open shelves where visitors could access books without the need to ask library staff for assistance, a concept Asplund studied in the United States during the construction of the library.” For more info: http://www.architravel.com/…/buil…/stockholm-public-library/
