Ramb is such an interesting commentary on a type of character who does the same thing other, more beloved handful of characters, but because he isn't AS boisterous... isn't AS attractive... isn't AS important... he is able to be quashed and silenced and shoved aside. Because he ISN'T throwing a tantrum, ISN'T going out of his way, ISN'T pushing his presence. He's more passive.
It's great on a meta level especially because 'he has everything people want out of this kind of character' is something I see and agree with quite often. but many boil him down to assumptions of his character-- again for the same shit other characters far more egregious and in power do-- and also because he isn't a conventional character in design, either.
All these things in tandem really do just emphasize the fact he isn't lovable by the greater fandom because of how things line up just right to spit on him specifically.
in fandom culture, ever since his official release, he's memeified as 'trying too hard' because no one is reading between the lines of his dialogue. he's boiled down to 'buzzword' guy or 'creepy evil man' when he isn't as bad as people hyperbolize him to be. he didn't match people's initial hype and expectations so people try to make him fit their ideas of what he is. they want him to be more. to be stronger. he isn't the right shape. the right gender. the right amount of secret boss. he doesn't have a super big boss battle. he doesn't even have merch to fuel the hype. people make up so many reasons why he isn't Enough.
he is so adamantly him. he is his own character. he has depth. he contradicts himself. and everyone's expectations. and for that, people hate him for it.

i hate the way fat antagonists have their weight moralized and used as a metaphor for greed and corruption and i hate the way it's overcorrected into fat people being "soft squishy friend-shaped cupcakes who look like they give incredible hugs" and i long for the day we have nuanced, interesting, and complicated fat characters and most of all i long for the day people are normal about fatness

I love that Noelle canonically played the βEvil Routeβ of Dragon Blazers even though it scared her and she felt bad about it. I love that Susie played the Evil Route by accident because she didnβt consider that it was an option not to kill everything. I love that Kris purposely sacrificed copyright-neutral Yoshis when playing video games with Asriel as a kid. I love that Ramb thinks Kris would find Tennaβs version of the Chapter 3 boards to be boring and would prefer the original version where you can use violence to get stronger. I love that Rambβs assumption is implied to be correct. I love that Kris only flinches away from the screen in the Sword Route when they have to kill the sprites representing their friends. I love that you can control lilβ kris to hop out of the game and actually threaten real Kris and Susie with the sword, and that this freaks Kris the fuck out. I love that Asriel tried to pray for Kris over their Yoshi killing sins and that Father Alvin found it naive and ridiculous. To believe that your actions in a video game would say anything about your actual character. I love that Kris and Noelle and Susie and Catti and probably Berdly too would all play the Weird Route if they had access to Deltarune. I wish the fandom took all of this into more consideration when analyzing the meta-narrative that Deltarune is trying to tell instead of resorting to 2015 era βyouβre horrible for playing the Weird Routeβ rhetoric

wait am i misinterpreting this or does the 'animatronic' have a brain inside..
Something my friend pointed out:
Frankie is constantly shown as having the broken shield and Andi constantly is depicted as having a broken sword
They both also try to fall into their trope roles though they seem to fail. Frankie is the brawn, she tries to fight but fails. Though when she needs to get the vending machine gizmos for Andi she chooses to be sneaky and hacks the machine, and when sheβs faced with a non working android she always seems to have an idea of what to do.
meanwhile andi tries to be the smart one and quite literally is fired from her smart girl job (not to mention that when she finally fixes the dragon head itβs implied that she was only able to because Frankie gave her the idea for it.) she is often the one who yells at folks and actually tries to fight. In other words these twoβs roles should be reversed, Frankie should have the sword, Andi should have the shield. but instead they both try to do what is expected of them and so their instruments are depicted as broken.
Now take a look at our girl Gwen
Who is depicted as having a broken crown. What exactly does this mean? Sheβs not a princess? Sheβs not a damsel in distress? My friend and I arenβt really sure yet but it feels like something.
