So like. The desert is freezing at night and boiling at day. The elements are just about as savage as they can be and as a result it looks like a whole lot of nothing but dead, unforgiving, hostile emptiness. But that couldn't be further from the truth, deserts have a biodiversity matched only by rainforests and much like rainforest most of it is unique to that specific desert. Most deserts formed from ancient lakes or oceans that dried out, leaving the remaining creatures to adapt to a rapidly changing and ever more hostile environment. It's similar to those endothermic vents miles under the water any niche you can fill or make in a desert is extremely valuable but you can like, realistically go there. A desert is so very alive, despite looking as it does, despite everyone thinking otherwise. If you have never heard all the calls and sounds fill the cooling air as the sun sets as if to say 'I'm here, despite everything, I'm still here and I'm alive' it's an S tier experience.

I canât believe itâs still a wip when itâs already so insanely long! Iâll make sure to read it and then cry with you guys while waiting for it to continue :D
Just wanted to rec 'Home Also I Cannot Go' for the last mpreg question. It's on ffnet and it's WIP but it's by far the best one of this type I've read. Also, try 'These Hands' on Ao3¡. Also really, really good.
thanks anon! I havenât read these myself (but iâll read when i get the chance) so canât say much on the content but hereâs to anyone who are interested:
MPREG WARNING AGAIN

Happy three year and two day anniversary to this fic (eee thatâs weird to say), and thank you so much to everyone reading.

Wow. Iâve been reading this K/S fic for close to three years now.
YEahâŚ
Everyone go read Home Also I Cannot Go. Yes, it is mpreg. NO WAIT DONâT RUN AWAY! Itâs some of the most realistic and in-depth story-telling Iâve ever had the pleasure to read. Brilliant characterization and meticulously detailed and patient pace. Itâs a long haul, but it is so, so worth it.
yesterday I was hit hard for nostalgia for this fic, tbh it's been a while since I checked on it (I'm subscribed to the fic but not series) even though this fic has never left me my memory is admittedly not the best but I was " I know I followed the author back in tumblr and I'll be able to recognise the user name if I see it" and I did! I'm incredibly thrilled about hat and about finding small new pieces of the HAICG verse to read, I'll prolly re-read the whole series asap 1/
Tbh I'm super excicted to do the re-read. life's busy this days but I did read the last two chapters and I'm just I NEED TO RE-READ IT ALL AGAIN also I'm so incredibly grateful that you have taken time to write this piece and so glad that you're still working on finish it (take whatever time you need) I am not so active on tumblr these days but I'm def gonna try to check this blog as much as posible. my inbox is always open if you wish to talk although I might be a bit of a slow to answer 2/2
Thank you so much for this ask! I was very excited to receive it and have read it multiple times.
HAICG has been mostly dormant for such a long time, and yet people still seem to remember it, think fondly of it, and want to re-read it, and that really warms my heart.
It also makes it easier for me to face the possibility continuing the fic and giving it the ending it deserves, too. I'm hoping to pick it up again in earnest in 2022--no promises, but it is on my radar. It's an intimidating prospect because it's been so long since I worked on it, because I've grown and changed a lot as a writer since I first began the fic, and because a lot of my notes are just old brainstorm lists or vague ideas. But I do love the fic and its characters very much and I'm excited at the thought of having something new to post.
Anyway, yes! I am always excited to hear about an HAICG re-read or to get asks about the fic, or questions or comments or whatever! Thank you again!

i think sometimes that in writing and life we make the error of assuming what someone is pushed into saying in moments of extreme emotion are the Most Truthful.
there are times that difficult or ugly things are true, or when people need help letting go of ugly things they don't WANT to believe but do despite their wishes.
but that feeling of "i wish i hadn't said that" after an argument, or someone else saying "i regret saying that," isn't necessarily trying to brush away an uncomfortable "truth." in writing conflict, and in real life, a lot of the time people are shaped by the choices that they make AGAINST their most selfish, base instincts. this is why pushing against someone until they break and spill ugly things at another person isn't necessarily uncovering their "true" feelings.
(maybe this perspective is partly from having dealt with intrusive thoughts for so long, thoughts i've had to learn don't define me or aren't "really" me as long as i'm making the choice to not act on them or dwell on them.)
often, people have two reactions to a situation: an impulsive reaction and their considered reaction. choosing to bite one's tongue isn't just polite, but it can be an intentional act of love or kindness. it's not cowardice or dishonesty to do the hard, crawling work of reshaping your own internal responses out of some greater motive or care. and the things that people say when they fail to do this aren't always the things they WANT to hold or believe.
that's why "clearing the air" in fiction can ring false. most people don't feel better, not for long, about saying gross things they are frequently tempted to hold on to. sometimes, someone finally being honest can be refreshing, but most of the time unless clearing the air is actually sorting out misunderstandings that cast things in a better light? people end up feeling worse.
that's becuase the uglier things we think about each other in our relationships are, to some degree, only true if we let them be. the compulsion to just finally say that awful thing that runs through your head when you're already upset isn't going to actually vent your anger the way you hope it will. you might feel better for a little, and then what you've done really is worn a groove in the neural pathway of being an angry, cruel person. if you do that often enough, then the actual truth in play is that you are a person who won't do much work to shape kindness in yourself, and will always hold others flaws against them for your own emotional convenience.
in life and in fiction, kind people usually aren't kind because they never think anything awful. it's becuase they've never let those grooves wear deep. they've refused to become addicted to the short-lived high of explosive impulse, with all other considerations taking a backseat. choosing kindness in relationships, no matter now difficult they are, is a daily choice where the truth of what you think about another person is what you choose to focus on and say. it's looking at someone with intentional, active love and care. it gets easier with practice.
and some hard truths are most truthful when they're delivered with the same considerate love.
in writing relationships and in real life ones, make sure you aren't assuming people at their worst are saying the most truthful things. sometimes, the truth is in what someone is choosing every day even when it's hard.

Summary:
Jim Kirk, the richest, bravest, and most feared pirate on the seas, has set his sights on the infamous Treasure of the Golden Skull, much to his crewâs dismay. According to legend, no one has ever seen the skull and lived to tell the tale. What has drawn him to the planetâs edge, looking for a bounty that canât be found, that shouldnât be found? Why chase madness?
Because heâs already mad?
Or because the treasure promises him the one thing a pirate life cannot: a chance of going home?
I spent a lot of time today brainstorming fics (not HAICG...though one potential ST AOS story...) and then I watched STXI in the evening and now Iâm like vibrating at a strong frequency with guilt over letting this fic go fallow. I love the HAICG verse so much but tbqh Iâm a little intimidated by it and by jumping back into part three.
At work today, I started thinking about how, while Iâm fine with Kirk and Spockâs first meeting in ST09 and it works well enough for that AU, I emphatically donât think any of that Academy stuff is also canonical for the TOS timeline. I seem to vaguely remember someone (involved with the film) saying it could work for both. I neither agree with that nor want it to be true.
I wonât go so far as to say itâs impossible, but the main reason I actually do think itâs implausible is that their relative school-ages are different in each âverse. That is, they are still the same number of calendar years apart, but in the TOS TL they each started the Academy at 18, whereas in the AOS TL, Spock starts at 18 and Kirk at about 22. So Spock is already several years out of the Academy when Kirk starts in AOS, whereas in TOS they might have overlapped in their education. Thus it seems illogical (sorry) to assume they met in the same way, even if you do think they met before serving on the Enterprise together as Captain and XO.
Do I think they likely knew each other in some other way? I mean⌠itâs plausible. Starfleet might not be that big, and Kirk canonically knows literally everyone. But considering that Spock spent almost his entire career on the Enterprise with Pike, and Kirk was on a variety of other vessels and planets, I feel like they probably didnât know each other more than in passing.
And because âknew each other in passingâ just isnât a fun origin story, I personally assume that they did not know each other at all before Kirk got the Enterprise. I use a lot of apocryphal sources, personal heacanons, and random assumptions to make up their back story as I see it, but nevertheless, I just have a lot of feelings about it and love it so much more than any boring enemies-to-(friends/lovers) narrative.

THE BIG VULCAN BIOLOGY POST (aka Vulcan is a Hell Planet)
DISCLAIMER: I am not a biologist, astrophysicist, neurologist, animal psychologist or literally anything that would qualify me to talk about this with 100% confidence. This is the result of dozens of headcanons and obsessive deep dive research. I donât want this post to be three miles long, so after I address the planetary stuff I will oblige yâall with a Read More.
Adsfasdkfjhaslkdfh Iâve been working on this post for almost a month SO HERE WE GO!
First of all, Vulcan (aka TâKhasi) is a HELL PLANET, which is part of the reason theyâre so badass, I say this for the following reasons:
No moon(s) (natural satellites)
Sodium (Salt) is so rare on the planet that Vulcanâs oceans are freshwater
Itâs a âSuper-Earthâ (as in big chonkinâ planet of similar composition to earth in the âgoldilocks regionâ)
Letâs do this.
âVulcan has no moon Ms. Uhura.â
-Spock, The Man Trap
Tons of things change about our planet if there was no moon:
Much darker nights (no moonlight)
Much lower sea levels since there is no gravity from the moon to pull it upward.
Lower and weaker tides because the water is pulled by the sun instead of the moon, and it depends on how large the Vulcan solar systemâs sun is for how big the waves are.
Stronger winds from faster planet rotation.
Depending on whether the axis of the planet would straighten or tilt further without the moonâs pull, combined with the faster rotation would lead to more severe seasons (strong tilt) or no seasons at all (no tilt)
The first factor may lead to Vulcan eyes being very catlike even if they arenât nocturnal (I think theyâre crepesucular but weâll get into that later). Which given the likely nature of their blood and their herbivorous eating habits they probably arenât. The sky would still be so dark that our human eyes couldnât even see our hands in front of us, being blind when the sun goes down could be a death sentence. Alternatively, if they didnât develop strong night vision that may be one of the reasons why they have such strong senses of hearing.
The stronger winds, faster rotation, and stronger (or nonexistent) seasons come from the lack of resistance and friction that stronger tides and the moonâs pull create on our planet. I suspect that Vulcan is larger, or at least denser than Earth, but Iâve been informed that according to the TMP novelization that it does rotate faster. I also think that Vulcanâs tilt is on the more extreme end to get the hostile extremes like storms and heat that we see on Vulcan.
If you look at this image of Vulcan, water covers way less of the planetâs surface than Earth. I donât think this is necessarily because Vulcan has less water, but that it isnât spread as far because of the lack of moon, and the fact that the oceans are freshwater, Iâll get into that shortly.
âMy ancestors spawned from a different ocean than yours.â
-Spock, The Man Trap
In the Star Trek: The Original Series (third) pilot The Man Trap, there is a creature that kills its victims by draining their bodies completely of salt. Spock encounters the creature but does not die, implying his (and Vulcans overall) body contains little to no salt. His justification is that his species did not evolve from a salinized ocean.
What does it mean to have oceans with no salt?
This has to mean that sodium is a very rare mineral on Vulcan, as the reason our oceans are so salinized is due to erosion of minerals by rainfall, carried from river to ocean. Salt in the ocean is also generated by submarine volcanic activity, which means either that the volcanoes on Vulcan (which we definitely know exist) somehow donât produce salt, or the vast majority of the submarine volcanoes have been inactive for millions if not billions of years. The active volcanoes on Vulcan must be very far inland and/or Vulcan has almost no rivers, which given how hot the planet is, wouldnât actually be too much of a stretch of the imagination.
Which means every single lifeform on TâKhasi, including Vulcans, evolved biosystems that exist without (or with very little) salt content. Any salt that exists would likely be deep beneath the planetâs surface, and within volcanoes.
No saltwater has a ton of consequences:
Plants (like underwater algae) are rarer and may not photosynthesize the same way Earth plants do, meaning less oxygen and more carbon dioxide, which means more greenhouse effect, which means higher temperatures.
The lack of salt would also mean less diverse plant life (at least as humans know it) and given the lack of visible rivers and vast swaths of desert on Vulcan, we can safely say vegetation must be hardier and infrequent.
Lower sea levels as the oceans would have lower density due to lack of salt.
Little to no water convection, which salt is crucial for on Earth. Which means warm ocean water doesnât move to cold regions and vice versa. Creating extremes, the equator being obscenely hot, and polar waters freezing at the poles more extensively.
Lack of convection means more frequent and stronger storms like hurricanes.
If you thought the lack of a moon made Vulcan inhospitable, compound it with the low sodium factor and youâve got a planet of even more severe extremes than before. The heat, and the decrease of plant diversity definitely explain why the vast majority of Vulcan is rocky desert, even being near the water poses more extreme dangers than it would on earth due to the increased frequency of hurricanes.
âMr. Spock is much stronger than an ordinary human being.â
-Kirk, This Side of Paradise
I am almost 100% sure that Vulcan is either bigger or denser than Earth. Which would explain why Vulcans are so much stronger than Humans and other species that exist on similar gravity worlds.
Effects of a high-gravity planet or âSuper-Earthâ include:
Everything is shorter or has very strong foundations, plants, animals, structures, and people.
More âArmageddonâ class asteroids would hit the planet (like the one that killed the dinosaurs and created the Gulf of Mexico)
Larger liquid mantle under the planetâs surface, higher pressure under the surface as well.
Weaker magnetic field due to lack of convection in the planetâs core (not to be confused with the mantle interacting with the planetâs crust). Which means a weaker atmosphere, lower magnetism in surface metals, and increased vulnerability to solar flares.
More volcanically and seismically active due the the increase in the mantleâs size and generated heat, more earthquakes, and more volcanic eruptions.
Would have to have a smaller sun but be closer in orbit to it than earth.
Extremely deep oceans, potentially with water under so much pressure at the bottom that it becomes solid like ice. Luckily Vulcan is not an ocean world, because the pressure would block the planetâs core from interacting with the atmosphere, which would prevent life as we know it from happening.
There is plenty of evidence for this on so many levels. We never see any plant life similar to trees on Vulcan. Nor animals significantly larger than Vulcans, the ones that are bigger are much more muscular. Vulcanâs sky is more red than blue because of the lack of oxygen molecules for the light from the sun to filter as blue. I actually headcanon that Spock is unusually tall for a Vulcan because of his human heritage (Leonard Nimoy was around 6ft tall) , and may have had heart and muscle problems in his teens and early adulthood while on Vulcan.
Perhaps Vulcans are the result of many more extinction level events than we are, contributing to their hardiness. Perhaps they are, evolutionarily, not too much older than we are, and had more incentive to develop extraterrestrial technology than we have, so that they could repel Armageddon Class meteors and defend their planet against Solar Flares? Space travel being born out of self-preservation rather than curiosity. Which would absolutely account for their attitudes in the beginning of Star Trek: Enterprise.
It could be that Vulcans still maintain a semi-nomadic lifestyle even today because their planet is so incredibly volatile. Unsentimental and utilitarian in anything less than the most sacred of architecture long before they adopted the teachings of Surak. Their own survival more valuable than any structure that would inevitably be damaged or destroyed by their planetâs harsh environment.
In summary, Vulcan is a Nightmare Planet because:
So, so many much natural disasters, like, so many, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, twisters, just, so many more than Earth.
Water is relegated to specific locations in the world rather than spread across it due to lack of flow and lower sea levels.
Extreme temperature changes, intense heat, intense cold, hard to breathe, stronger gravity.
Due to the planetâs hostility, there is a smaller diversity of life than we have here on earth, which means fewer and hardier food sources that, like Vulcans, are very difficult to kill.
So⌠How do they handle it? What features have they developed to adapt and thrive in such an inhospitable place?
three days ago I got an ao3 subscription update email and the authorâs note on the chapter said theyâd come back and written chapter ten SIXTEEN YEARS after chapter nine was published, so, never fear to hit that subscribe button folks
LEAVE THAT COMMENT. Even if the fic is old. You never know whoâs listening, or if your words are exactly the little push that author needs to take a trip down memory lane and remember all the wonderful things that inspired them to write the fic in the first place. Think about it, Reader. YOU could be the person that RESURRECTS THAT FIC!
