We can sympathize with an asshole character. We can sympathize with his struggles and his story, therefore we could, in a way, understand his actions. However, we all should know he'll need to someday face the consequences of his actions.

And that happened with Jax, she abstracted.

However...I think what the critics are upset with is that somehow even with this consequence, Jax was still treated with love and care (both by the cast and the fans) when she shouldn't be. She doesn't deserve that sort of treatment regardless of what she went through. Her victims on the other hand are either viewed as annoying or that they should adjust and feel bad for him even though some of them have issues that are just as bad as hers.

I can understand Jax quite perfectly, I really do. Hell, I could sometimes see bits of myself and my other close friends in her. The difference however is that she's a cruel and irredeemable person, and that's the tragedy of her character.

"*Le gasp* are you saying you think people with mental health issues are irredeemable???" Please stop using mentally unwell people as a shield to your blatant bias towards a character you kin.

Now what do I mean with Jax being cruel and irredeemable? Well, throughout the course of the show, she is shown time and time again to be given a chance to change or perhaps treat someone with at least a hint of decency but simply refuses to. Sure, there are mentally unwell people who can be assholes (believe me, I would know) but if given the chance to self-reflect and admit they were in the wrong, they usually come around and try their damn hardest to improve. Jax is surrounded by people who were willing to help him out, but instead of accepting it, she either lashes out or bullies the first person she sees and what do you know, never apologizes for it.

She was raised in an abusive household I know, but in the circus, she was given a chance to get away from that part of herself and work together with people who are possibly in the same boat as her. But she chooses not and decides to be a much worse version of herself than before.

That is why it's so hard to feel bad for her when she's finally met her demise.

If you want an example of an irredeemable asshole character that you can feel bad for when he met his tragic end, just look no further to Simon from Book 3 of Infinity Train.

Simon was just a kid when he got into the train, so pretty much from the get-go he didn't have a good guardian to aid him as he grew up in the train. His body grew but his mind stayed in its immature state from when he was still a kid. From there you could already feel bad for him, and when he starts to bond with Hazel and realizes that there might be another way to live in the train than what he and Grace were used to, you want Simon to get better. You would even think he's getting over his prejudices towards the train's inhabitants when he starts to get along with Tuba.

And that is why it was such a slap in the face when (uh...spoilers) he killed Tuba with no remorse and it is revealed that he never viewed Tuba as more than what he calls a "null".

From then on you can't help but hope he turns around for the better or feel sorry for his actions, when he is given multiple chances to change and redeem himself. However he doesn't and lets his own thoughts spiral for the worse until he's at a point of no return where eventually, he was killed by what he feared the most. And you could empathize with Grace grieving for Simon since it's shown that they were practically attached to the hip from when they were kids and relied on each other for survival before establishing the Apex. Yet at the same time, you can acknowledge that he was a bad person and sadly deserved his cold and brutal end. It isn't shown if she forgives him or not but we can all see how his actions affected her by the end.

Back to Jax, we are supposed to feel bad for her but we're not given or shown any scenes as a reason to why we should root for or at least care for her. The characters themselves don't like to be within Jax's proximity and the moment they try to reach out she would then bully and degrade them in return. She's had friends before but the moment they get close she has the audacity to act like they're the bully.

So with that being said, why should we want to see her surrounded with love if she keeps acting like a piece of shit every time we see her?
