Everything Is Awful and Iām Not Okay: questions to ask before giving up
Are you hydrated? Ā If not, have a glass of water.
Have you eaten in the past three hours? Ā If not, get some food ā something with protein, not just simple carbs. Ā Perhaps some nuts or hummus?
Have you showered in the past day? Ā If not, take a shower right now.
If daytime: are you dressed? Ā If not, put on clean clothes that arenāt pajamas. Ā Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether itās a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.
If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep? Ā Put on pajamas, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes ā no electronic screens allowed. Ā If youāre still awake after that, you can get up again; no pressure.
Have you stretched your legs in the past day? Ā If not, do so right now. Ā If you donāt have the spoons for a run or trip to the gym, just walk around the block, then keep walking as long as you please. Ā If the weatherās crap, drive to a big box store (e.g. Target) and go on a brisk walk through the aisles you normally skip.
Have you said something nice to someone in the past day? Ā Do so, whether online or in person. Ā Make it genuine; wait until you see something really wonderful about someone, and tell them about it.
Have you moved your body to music in the past day? Ā If not, do so ā jog for the length of an EDM song at your favorite BPM, or just dance around the room for the length of an upbeat song.
Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days? Ā If not, do so. Ā Donāt be afraid to ask for hugs from friends or friendsā pets. Ā Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; youāre not imposing on them.
Do you feel ineffective? Ā Pause right now and get something small completed, whether itās responding to an e-mail, loading up the dishwasher, or packing your gym bag for your next trip. Ā Good job!
Do you feel unattractive? Ā Take a goddamn selfie. Ā Your friends will remind you how great you look, and youāll fight societyās restrictions on what beauty can look like.
Do you feel paralyzed by indecision? Ā Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. Ā If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Ā Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.
Have you seen a therapist in the past few days? Ā If not, hang on until your next therapy visit and talk through things then.
Have you been over-exerting yourself lately ā physically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually? Ā That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether itās physical rest, taking time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment.
Have you changed any of your medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand? Ā That may be screwing with your head. Ā Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesnāt settle down.
Have you waited a week? Ā Sometimes our perception of life is skewed, and we canāt even tell that weāre not thinking clearly, and thereās no obvious external cause. Ā It happens. Ā Keep yourself going for a full week, whatever it takes, and see if you still feel the same way then.
Youāve made it this far, and you will make it through. Ā You are stronger than you think.

Ummmm excuse me but this is fucking brilliant.
Did you just cure imposter syndrome with⦠spite?

the entire cafeteria:
If you struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, or just plain feeling like a failure, I have a mantra for you thatās been really helping me out lately:
Just show up.
I used to skip class because the whole thing was so overwhelming: I had to get dressed in something clean even though I never had the energy to do laundry, walk to school, sit in class for up to three hours, plus pay attention, take notes, and participate in discussion. In reality, I was being a perfectionist, and life would have been a lot easier for me if I had Just Shown Up. By staying home because of my depression and anxiety, I wasnāt giving myself the chance to do any of that. I was such a perfectionist that being a ābadā or average student was unthinkable, so I stopped being a student at all.
If youāre having trouble getting something done, Just Show Up. You donāt have to be employee of the month. You donāt have to be valedictorian. Just Show Up.
ime it also helps to be like āyou dont have to stay the whole time, you just have to goā bc most of the time once youre there itās fine. a lot of things are like that, like⦠you dont have to finish the dishes, just start them. a lot of the time once you start a task itās easier to finish than to stop, especially if you can trick yourself like āafter five more minutes if i still feel bad iāll go homeā or āafter washing two more dishes i can stop for todayā
even if you donāt finish the task, you started it, and by completing part of it you lessened your future workload and ALSO taught your brain that things may not be as daunting as they seem
This is wisdom! Peace!

17.7.2016 // I finally assembled my ikea desk! Iāve been studying to get ahead on classes this fall.
hello naughty children it's akrasia scrupulosity time
are you ready for the latest in research-based [ingroup] demographic stereotypy? this oneās a doozy.
In our clinical practice, adults with IQ scores in and above the superior range have sought evaluation and treatment for chronic difficulties with organizing their work, excessive procrastination, inconsistent effort, excessive forgetfulness, and lack of adequate focus for school and/or employment. They question whether they might have an attention deficit disorder, but often they have been told by educators and clinicians that their superior intelligence precludes their having ADHD.
Typically, these very bright individuals report that they are able to work very effectively on certain tasks in which they have strong personal interest or intense fear of immediate negative consequences if they do not complete the task at once. Yet they are chronically unable to make themselves do many tasks of daily life they recognize as important but do not see as personally interesting at that moment. When provided treatment appropriate for ADHD, these very bright individuals often report significant improvement in their ability to work effectively while their medication is active.
yes. so. how would you like a summary of my educational career?
Clinical interviews with patients in this study indicated that individuals with high IQ who have ADHD may be at increased risk of having recognition and treatment of their ADHD symptoms delayed until relatively late in their educational careers because teachers and parents tend to blame the studentās disappointing academic performance on boredom or laziness, especially as they notice the situational variability of their ADHD symptoms.
Like most others with ADHD, these individuals have a few specific domains in which they have always been able to focus very well, for example, sports, computer games, artistic or musical pursuits, reading self-elected materials. Parents and teachers tend to assume that these very bright persons could focus on any other tasks equally well, if only they chose to do so. These observers do not understand that although ADHD appears to be a problem of insufficient willpower, it is not (Brown, 2005).
Many also reported that they often demonstrated considerable prowess in performing specific tasks in which they had little positive personal interest but did experience considerable fear of immediate negative consequences if they did not complete that particular task by some external deadline. Often subjects described this as a character trait, āIām just a severe procrastinatorā or āI always work best under pressure.ā
thatās not all.
In an unpublished study of 103 treatment-seeking adults with IQ 120 or more diagnosed with ADHD, Brown and Quinlan (1999) found that 42% had dropped out of postsecondary schooling at least once, although some did eventually return to complete a degree. Those data together with this present study suggest that individuals with high IQ and ADHD, despite their strong cognitive abilities, may be at significant risk of educational disruption or failure due to ADHD-related impairments of EF.
and now?
Biederman et al. (2006) [ā¦] found that adults with ADHD who self-reported elevated levels of EF impairments on the CBS tended to be significantly more impaired on measures of global functioning, had more comorbidities, and held lower current socioeconomic status than did those with or without ADHD who scored below the median on that scale. [ā¦]
ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
So, like, I donāt know how many of you-all this stuff describes, but it was awfully familiar to me and what my life has been like, so I wanted to share it since itās an actual freaking patternĀ for us ADHDers who are alsoĀ āgifted.ā
