Microsoft OneNote tutorial for study, class and lecture by emmastudies
Hello! I have had numerous people message me about how I structure my notes for OneNote so I thought I would put together a tutorial! Above is a small run down of the program and my little two cents on each feature. But now Iām going to go into a little more detail to help anyone who is looking for somewhere to type their notes. Through Iāll suggest my ideas on how to use OneNote for different reasons including study notes, class notes and lecture/tutorial notes.
Set up and use:
Start by downloading OneNote from the App Store or from their websiteĀ if youāre using a PC. It is free!!! I would definitely recommend downloading the mobile or tablet app as well.
Sign in with an Outlook account and begin making your notebooks. For high school I would suggest a new notebook for each class. For university, I had one notebook for the entire semester. As I go into my second semester Iāll make a new one, and so one. For study notes, it is up to you. You could either make one notebook for all your study notes and use sections to divide per subject or make a new notebook for each subject again. Or simply and a new section in the existing notebook. Notebooks are linked to OneDrive meaning you can close the notebook and reopen it at any time. Theyāre automatically saved too, so you can edit on your phone and when you use your computer it is updated!
Start creating sections. These act as dividers so depending how you have structured your notebook, make them for either each topic of your subject (high school) or each of your classes/subjects (university). For my high school class/study notes I made a new section for each new topic and for university I have one per subject. As you can see in the photoset; my notebook was legal studies (subject) and each section was for a topic (crime, human rights, family, consumers, assessments and homework).
Create your pages for each time you have class. Add the title of what youāre doing and start typing your notes. For my lectures I usually just name them ālecture 1ā,Ā ālecture 2ā because Iām lazy, however for study notes I would use each subheading of the topic in the syllabus. If youāre wanting to understand my headings and subheadings completely I suggest checking out the legal studies syllabus that I created the above notes too (you can see it here on page 26).
Time for decoration and colour coding. Usually as Iām typing I bold or underline andĀ colour code but you can always go back and do it as a revision method. This also gives you a chance to add any extra information you find! You can see an explanation of my colour code in the final image of the photoset. I found colour coding and formatting super helpful when I was studying for my HSC final exams!
Printing time! When I had finished my study notes (or class notes) I would print them so I had a physical copy to highlight and annotate. Here is where it gets a little fiddly. To print on one A4 size piece of paper without cutting off half your text, you need to shrink the size of the text box. This is what you might see - with half the text cut off. I would say reduce it to about half the original size - you can usually see on print preview how close it is to the edge. After you have made the textbox thinner, it should look like this. Another tip is printing using one sheet for two or more pages. This helps to reduce the amount of paper youāre using. On the print settings look forĀ āpages per sheetā and change it to the number of pages you want (obviously the more pages, the smaller the font). It should look something like this (Iām not 100% sure if every computer or printer has this option, but for reference I use an Epson printer).
That is pretty much it for how I use OneNote for my all my different types of notes! It is very simple once youāve organised everything!Ā I would 100% recommend this program. We were advised to use it in year 9 when we received laptops from the government and Iāve not stopped using it. Althought there are some different between the Mac and PC versions, the main elements are the same. However you can check out this post by @vanesastudies which is for the PC version. I hope this tutorial was helpful. If there is anything Iāve missed out, drop me an ask. Thank you for reading! x

Once you get this, you have to say five things you like about yourself, publicly. Then you have to send this to ten of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool~) š»š
Daaaannnnggggg this has been sitting in my inbox for like⦠a year. Basically, write 5 things you love about yourself, because positivity is awesome! Then, tag 10 people so we can share the positivity.
Things I love about myself:
1. My brain (wit, intellect, etcetera, etcetera.)
2. My loyalty.
3. My passion for books/stationery/school
4. My sarcastic personality
5. My need to bake cookies for EVERY occasion. For everyone. (You got an A on a test? Cookies! Your bf broke up with you? Cookies! You ran into a tree? Cookies!)

letās face it: sometimes, there are a ton of things weād rather do instead of studying. and sometimes, itās so so easy to succumb to these distractions because⦠!?!?!?Ā for this next addition to the #studyingwithacdemic masterpost series, here are my personal tips for distraction-free studying.
iāve always had this super bad habit of leaving things last minute because i⦠have zero self control. i end up being distracted by tumblr, youtube, online shopping, searching up random things, who even knows?! but recently, iāve been teaching myself to get better at studying with nO dISTrACTioNS.
i know, it sounds like a distant, far-off dream.
but here we go!
clean up your space.Ā itās super important to make sure your study space is clutter-free. you donāt have to be super neat, and it doesnāt have to be spotless, but you need to be able to find your stuff and think clearly. whenever iām feeling super off, iāll organize my desk a little bit and itās honestly so refreshing to study at a clean desk!!
kILL YOUR DISTRACTIONS.Ā this is what i do when i realize i am so far down the procrastination pit. do whatever it takesĀ to get rid of whatever has been distracting you. literally leave no options for yourself but to study. here are some ways you can do this: - turn off yo wifi. unless your assignment requires wifi, the best way to get rid of your online distractions is to simply turn off your wifi! i swear, this one saves the day when iām āwritingā essays. - get an app.Ā self control is my savior. if you donāt have a mac, cold turkey seems to be the popular one for windows users. - move. sometimes, if youāre working in your room, itās just too easy to take a nap or procrastinate. move to a place where someone else can see you and keep tabs on you.Ā āmom, can you please nag me??ā - if your distraction is a person.. yeah, donāt kill them. just politely ask them to stop-doing-the-distracting-thing and if they donāt stop, you may have to move. or get them to move.
time yourself.Ā look at the time. tell yourself:Ā ā5 minutes from now i will have finished at least two of these math problems.ā and in 5 minutes, if youāre still procrastinating, do pushups or something as punishment. use short spurts like this to keep an eye on yourself!! Ā
take breaks. youāll burn out easily if you just sit down for eight hours and study. take frequent (every half hour, or every hour) breaks to stretch, drink water, take a breather, and if you didnāt get enough sleep you can even take power naps. this keeps you focused on your task because you know that thereās a break coming up aS LONG AS YOU JUST. DO. IT! - i know itās been said before but..Ā during your break i definitely recommend exercising. exercise is so, so good for you and totally clears up your head. thereās no need to do a super intense crossfit/hiit workout or anything, but i like to do jumping jacks, high knees, wallsit, burpees, pushups, plank, stretching, tuck jumps, and/or yoga.
ask for help. this seems out of place, i know, but i think one of the main reasons i end up distracted is because iām just confused about what iām learning - and i donāt want to try and figure it out. if you find yourself getting stuck, instead of chilling out on youtube (āiāll watch one video. just one. seriously.ā), ask for help!!! you can search it up, of course, but i think asking a real person will make sure you actually get the job done.
lighting is important.Ā especially in the night. if youāre studying and itās dark, and itās nighttime, and youāre tired and bored, youāre going to think a nap time is in order. not only will lighting affect your sleepiness, itās also bad for your eyes to study for a longgg time in dim lighting. try to keep your study space bright, cheery, and encouraging!!
set up a plan.Ā setting up a strict (you can make it as strict as you want. if you want to be super specific and have things scheduled to the minute, go for it!!) study schedule will definitely keep you in check. if youāre just doing whatever, whenever, thereās a huge chance youāll end up doing nothing.
say no to tech. if you can, just try to close your computer and phone and go without them. i canāt avoid tech when iām studying since i do online school, but a lot of you can totally just use your handy textbook and notes.Ā
donāt give yourself other stuff to do. aka: no multitasking.Ā focus. on. one. thing. at. a. time. iām sometimes super scrambled up and iāll try and do my math homework, english essay, and history flashcards simultaneously. if youāve done this before youāll know itās nOT productive, and even more time-consuming than just tackling them all separately.Ā - this doesnāt just meanĀ ādonāt study a ton of topics all at onceā, i mean, dOnāT MulTitASk at all. if youāve got a study snack, or a good book, or anything like that nearby.. just avoid it for now. you can enjoy it later, when everything you need to do is done.
priorities are your friend!! set up a chart with your priorities. (i have one in my printable collection) do the tasks according to your priorities. that way, even if you do end up distracted, youāll have gotten the important things done before the less important things. (my non-eloquence here is cringeworthy. letās play a game called āhow many times can hannah say thing or things or thingy in one masterpost?ā)
sometimes youāre better off alone.Ā i know this sounds like a breakup tip. whoops. what i mean is, although studying with friends or classmates is often suggested (and itās great, it really is!!) sometimes thatās not the way to go. esPECIALLY if youāre studying with a friend. that snowball can roll down the distraction hill veeery quickly.
enjoy it!! studying is fun! if you actually enjoy what youāre doing, you wonāt even beĀ distracted in the first place. love school, love learning, love what youāre doing! ā”
allllrighty, that is it for my distraction-free studying tips!!Ā
i hope that was helpful andĀ if you have any questions, want to talk, want to yell at me for a bad masterpost, want to chat about your day, have any suggestions for future #studyingwithacdemic masterposts, want to request a future masterpost etc. etc. just drop me an ask and iāll answer asap to the best of my abilities! <3Ā
thanks for reading and have a lovely day, xoxo hannah
