he signed his life away as a young man and came back down a leg and completely traumatized. he would not be patriotic or proud. he would be angry and ashamed. his camaraderie is with other veterans screwed by the world, not with the institution itself.

"You sure you can handle that?"

meanwhile, her best friend:

jack sees him drive in without a helmet and loses it on him while on the the roof, saying “i need you to give a shit about your life.”

and robby responding with, “i have no one. jake won’t talk to me. i fucked it up with heather and with janey and with anyone else who ever could’ve been there. it doesn’t matter. let me have this.”

jack never wanted to do this. never wanted to tell robby this. he didn’t want to risk the relationship that got him through his darkest days but he couldn’t let robby throw away their life together. couldn’t let him believe he had no one. “you have me!” he breathes hard, not knowing where to go after that.

“you’ll find a new friend, you have the VA, everyone loves you, you’ll be fine.”

jack insisting, “i would be a fucking wreck. i can’t lose another person i love like that.”

robby, shaking his head, replying with, “don’t compare me to her. it’s not the same”

jack wasn’t sure how else to say it. robby is dead set on not believing him. he spells it out plain. “i’ve been in love with you for years. and i was content to let it be beers in the park and pirates games but if telling you that there’s someone who would cry like a fucking widow over your casket means you’ll sell that fucking bike then i’ll say it. i’m in love with you.” he steps forward and forces robby to look at him. he slowly says, “now stop doing stupid shit.”
