He gave a whole speech to Randy on how it’s good to be a virgin. I think Benson has been celibate for a long time. He’s so touch-starved for true affection, I think he would repeatedly push Randy away for initiating any sort of contact.

Benson can push Randy around and gently touch his face in comfort, but the second Randy tries to give him any sort of comfort back, he clamps up and shuts down.

he maybe planned to tell benson that he didn't even mention his name, didn't even say anyone was hurt. they could go and they wouldn't even be chased.

but things escalate and randy has to make a split second decision. he decides to show his teeth, like benson had been asking him to all day. and it's the wrong decision, startles an already cornered beast. he doesn't understand that benson would respond better to his begging, to his softness.

when benson goes to randy after shooting him, randy decides to tell him. maybe he thinks it'll land well, maybe he thinks benson will understand, without him having to explain. but i think from the moment that benson shot marsha, randy knew he had miscalculated. knew he had underestimated how overwhelmed benson is, how on edge, how desperate.
