Shower thoughts - ‘The Living and The Dead’ fan theories
Did you ever wonder: ‘What the hell was actually going on?’ in TLaTD? Here are two theories… (aware I’m over a year too late, but I think very slowly ; ))

Apart from the established fact that he's spectacularly incompetent as a shrink, these thories are brilliant! Primarily because I treated the series as an AU reality television show.
The fact that it was riddled with so much family drama automatically sent me into a Keeping Up with the Kardashians mindset. The entire household is a hot mess attempting manage and hold on to a business whilst trying to do damage control to their own lives. Marriage drama, work drama, baby drama, and even bringing up the deep dark past is nothing short of how a typical reality show is laid out these days. It just happens to be set in a seemingly idylic Victorian countryside.
Secondly, the idea of mental illness never even crossed my mind - although it is entirely possible and probably a much better theory on the whole.
But having this weird AU concept in my head, the supernatural part of the series immediately made me think "Omg Supernatural! Omg he's a hunter!" The fact that Nathan is so horribly incompetent at his "job" got me thinking that he moved back home after his mother died and took on the household to, again, do some damage control to the supernatural occurences around the estate. Hunters aren't particularly known to hold on to their families for obvious reasons, so we could argue that his paranoia and depression are the direct result of either a) hunter's guilt, or 2) the responsibility and consequences of being a hunter. The psychiatrist facade is merely his way of gathering insight to what supernatural being he's dealing with this week.
As for the ending... Well, I don't have a solid theory for that. But it does give off a weirdly familiar OJ Simpson vibes. Here's a man who has been accused of murdering his wife, but which wife? The first thing off the top of our head would be the first wife. But what if it's his second wife? Remember that Nicole Brown-Simpson was also OJ's second wife, as Charlotte is Nathan's. The end becomes a murder mystery that potentially combines the two previous AU theories, but will remain unsolved.
Lastly, I have never been so invested in a TV show since Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural 😅
