One time a friend told me that if she wanted to have a chill night she would come to me and ask for tea and a book to read. I didn’t like tea at the time, but I always made sure my cupboards had them in case she needed a quiet night. One time I told my boss that I loved oranges, but couldn’t peel them because of my nails. For a year he made sure to peel me one at least once a week. Once my friends gave me a made up superlative of “most likely to have a pen they could borrow” and ever since I’ve made sure I always carry a pen with me. A long time ago, my high school librarian told me that no one would care what my grade in my sophomore chemistry class was if I’m bringing them doughnuts and asking them about their day.

Sometimes friendship is about carrying pens and peeling oranges. But the point is, surrounding yourself with people who you want to do the little things for. The point of it all is bringing in the doughnuts because you’ve found the people who deserve the doughnuts.

oh eurydice. scrappy, tough, starving eurydice. the way she traded her personal autonomy and any remaining sense of control in her life for something so fundamental as shelter and food. the way she took hades’ contract because she had no other route, no way out, she’s seen the way the world is. have you ever been so hungry you’re not thinking straight? so hungry you’d sell your life away to fill your stomach? so hungry theres no other option but give your body and soul to a man who you do not trust? she knew she making a deal with the devil and took it anyway because survival comes before thought here. she’s a brilliant metaphor for the working girls, the factory scrubbers and the prostitutes living paycheck to paycheck, who gave themselves and who they are to capitalism in order to stay alive despite the wageslave trap they’ll never be able to maneuver out of. shes every girl whos followed someone she shouldn’t into the dark, because she was already gone anyway. she is the working class who gave themselves up to a corrupt system because there was no light at the end of the tunnel, not for them anyway, and food is more important than that light anyway.

i really really really really really like hadestown's repeated use of "eurydice was a hungry girl" because at first pass you might think oh, she's scrappy and street smart and her ambition is going to be the foil to orpheus's idealist romanticism. but nope! no she is literally hungry. she is starving. that is her motivator and everybody knows it. she loves, oh she does, but she can't be fucking blamed for fulfilling her physical needs first.

the musical STARTS with hades looking back btw. “you’re early” “i missed you” is hades looking back. is anybody listening. orpheus is told he can’t look back because hades knows he will because hades can’t stop himself from looking back. and that’s why the world is out of tune.
