ive never really played on hypixel before (prefer regular survival to highly custom minigame servers) but I thought itd be a good place to get better at pvp. I joined the pit game, and even when Im faced against someone with the exact same armor and weapons as me and were both just wildly swinging swords at eachother I die instantly, as if my hits dont even register.
In all seriousness, there’s two main possibilities here.
One, your aim just isn’t that good. It feels really rude telling a stranger that, but it’s pretty likely. Aiming at all is a learned skill, and aiming while clicking as fast as you can, even more so. I got a family member into the pit recently and looked over their shoulder while they played, and while they complained about their hits not registering, I could see they just weren’t landing any. You can be all up in someone’s business and still manage to miss them repeatedly (I know from experience 😔).
Unfortunately, there’s not really any tips or secrets for improving aim other than practice. It took countless duels against a friend of mine before I started winning a few. Practice, practice, practice.
Two: bad connection. Some poor hit reg is to be expected from Hypixel now and then, but making it completely unplayable is a problem.Â
First of all, what version are you on? Hypixel can run versions 1.8-1.16, but if you’re playing it on for the pvp, you should be on 1.8.9. If you’re on wifi, trying switching to ethernet, or vice versa. You could also try using a client, as I believe some improve hit reg (and most improve fps, which is always a plus). Badlion, Lunar, and LabyMod are some well-known pvp clients. I prefer Lunar, but different clients run better or worse on different computers.
Oh, and fair warning, the Pit is notorious for having an abnormally large amount of cheaters. Sometimes you fight someone and it doesn’t matter how good your aim is, because they’re using reach hacks to keep you in a combo you physically can’t break.
Last, and this isn’t specifically related to the problem you outlined, but it’s just good to know. The Pit is one of those games that’s completely unbearable to play alone, but a ton of fun with friends. There’s a few Pit players here, and we’d all be down to show you around or offer tips and tricks if you want it :D

i left pit a little after this post and tried joining duels, but due to pent up annoyance at pit I died instantly first duel and rage quit to go build a house instead haha
I am on 1.16 but isn't that best to learn current version with the cool downs and shields? I dont think my internets that shitty either, the ping bar looked normal and no one was lagging outside of crowded lobbies. I dont even own an ethernet cable though and id rather not depend on an external client so I guess all thats left is work on my aim. Youd think aim would be simple and easy when the big conky block man is right infront of you? I ill just have practice. I did see someone in a fourm recommend spawning in a wither skeleton with an iron sword/armor to train in single player at first? I dont think thatd be great for actual pvp but maybe it would help my aim until I can actually land a hit lol.
Thanks for responding! Ive never been good at pvp combat in any game and I really want to round out from builder/explore type player and do better in fights. Encouragement beyond my friends telling me to get gud is really nice. :)
I just wanna add on and say that no matter what version you use to log on to hypixel, it will always be 1.8 pvp mechanics. they need to have the whole server run on the same pvp system, or it just flat out wouldn’t work. that’s why it’s advantageous to play hypixel in 1.8, because the plugins and stuff used to force every version to use 1.8 pvp mechanics can be a bit weird, and in my opinion are just flat out broken.Â
if you’re wanting to learn 1.16 pvp specifically, hypixel isn’t the place to do that. there are some 1.16 pvp servers out there, but i don’t know any names specifically, so if that’s what you’re looking for you’re on your own XD.Â
if you don’t already have a preference, i highly suggest 1.8 pvp. i admit i’m a bit biased, but 1.16 is clunky and boring and all around just Not Good. if you do enjoy it, that’s totally fine! but 99% of the pvp community plays 1.8, and i think it has a lot more going for it in general. (which i won’t get into because this post will become about 2k words long)
i feel like this got very off-track, but i love seeing other people who are interested in getting into pvp and i wanna help where i can! starting out can be very overwhelming and discouraging, but once you get the hang of it it’s so much fun.
decided to add my own 2 cents in since the ppl above talked more about everything surrounding pvp instead of. pvp itself. its useful info but i thought id give some more practical in-moment advice.
more under the cut i guess because oh god i ramble a LOT and esp if its stuff im passionate about.
okay so. first of all. pit is literally both one of the worst and the best games to get good at pvp. worst because most of it is just running into a mosh pit and smacking everyone at least Once for xp, best because when you get a chance to 1v1 some other nerd thats not full dia, you might get some actual combat. i enjoy that part of the game a lot, but the pit is a carpal tunnel factory and unless you want your wrist to suffer, i'd start out with some click-lighter games lmao
anyhow, those above are right. 1.8.9 is the version you wanna go for if youre playing on hypixel. ive never used any launcher beyond the standard vanilla + optifine and the 1.7 animation mod. (blockhitting just looks nicer then but its 100% a personal preference and not mandatory.)
there are of course good post-1.8.9 pvp servers (minecraft ultimate public server is a banger, but the matches are one every few hours and you can and will get rolled by fruitberries/needlexd/tapl in person) but. we’re talkin bout hypickle so. yeah.
(i don’t know how far into the pvp hellscape you are, so like. sorry if i come off as condescending or w/e i dont mean to lmao)
first thing - blockhitting. put that right mouse key to use. aim to click it at the same time u do ur left. it gives you additional knockback And can block some damage. it’s a very useful skill esp in games like bedwars or skywars where you have to knock an opponent off of a single block wide bridge. or just when things get heated.
the best way to not die is to not get hit. simple. strafes help u do that! just go left and right as youre hitting your opponent. the goal is to make yourself as hard to aim at as you can. of course, dont lose your own aim in that. some also choose to jump while they do so, but being above someone makes you more suspectible to getting combo’d out of existence.Â
bows. bows are very useful for ranged combat, duh, but if you’re being approached, a single arrow can give them the knockback you need to get in a combo. whenever a player gets hit with an arrow, they go slightly up and it makes it harder for them to hit whoevers below eye level. that gives you a short window in which you can start hitting them and combo THEM out of existence. dont overuse it tho. if you cant pull the bow back before they get to you, you should probably just pull your sword out. or perhaps, even...
THE ROD. rodding is. a skill, for sure. it very much depends on your aim AND the ability to predict where the nerd youre intending to attack is going (also a bow thing, btw). in newer versions, a rod can only pull someone towards you. in 1.8, it knocks them back, enabling a combo. think - bow but close range. someone skilled in rodding can and will keep you at more than arms length. you won’t be able to reach them at all and it will be infuriating. not that im speaking from experience, of course. could never happen to me.
the rod is more versitale than a bow, even despite the shorter range. you can spam the rod all you want until it breaks. that is, unless you know that quickly swapping to your sword instead of pulling the rod back won’t use up it’s durability at all (wink wink nudge nudge). even if youre honestly horrible at it, it’s always an advantage to just swing it around at your opponent. it gives you swag and genuienely works as an intimidation tactic because rodding is usually a Good PvPer Thing. it just works. dont question why, i dont know.
also theres no rods in bedwars. if youve played skywars, you know exactly why.
theres also the ancient arts of W-tapping but i have not yet advanced this far in my journey. it has to do with resetting your sprint, which has more knockback than walking. i think. not sure.
a thing to watch out for in 1.8 combat is that projectiles have different physics. try running around with splash potions and hit yourself/other objects with those while youre sprinting. on both versions. take ur own conclusions from that.
