big fan of the trope/dynamic of Kirk openly and insistently flirting with Spock knowing Spock knows what human courting looks like and takes his lack of response as rejection which absolutely kills Kirk inside but he keeps doing it because he literally can't control himself around him
while Spock interprets Kirk's smirks and winks as just being playful and friendly since he is flirty with everyone on the ship and Spock deduces this is just his way of including Spock into the family and so Spock focus all his energy on remaining stoic, hiding his love for his captain as to not make Kirk uncomfortable by reciprocating which absolutely kills him inside but he buries that too
and then both of them avoiding skin to skin contact because they don't want to make the other uncomfortable by their own feelings for eachother and then both getting hurt by the fact that the other is avoiding their touch :))))) myeah
In desperate need of talking about Sulu's insane fit in The Voyage Home 🗣️🗣️🗣️

#raise your shields #because you’re about to get wrecked
#this is the star trek i wanna see#like when somebody asked gene roddenberry why piccard was bald#because wouldn’t they have found a cure for male pattern baldness by then?#and he was like ‘no by the 24th century no one will care’#i wanna see that attitude with disability and neurodiversity#it’s not that we’ll have a magic cure for everything#there’ll always be something new#but disabilities and neurodiversity will be celebrated and seen as part of the norm#it will be accomodated#so blind people can serve in star fleet#and so can people in wheelchairs and autistic people and people with prosthetics and people with chronic illnesses (via @hunterinabrowncoat)
This episode ends with Geordi saving the planet by using something derived from the technology found in his visor (an adaptive device that lets him sense things around him). So a disabled man literally saved the lives of an entire culture that wouldn’t have considered his life worth living, using technology they would have never deemed necessary without the presence of his unique needs.
I don’t watch Star Trek, but I can’t stress enough how important this message is
My favorite thing about this episode is that, while the rest of the characters are taking a more Star Trek philosophical approach to this situation, calmly debating the good and bad points of this colony built upon eugenics, Geordi is just seething. Troi is having a romance with their flippin’ president, but Geordi never hesitates on his morals. He’s always aware that this world’s supposed perfection is built upon the despicable philosophy of killing people like him. He barely even bothers to hide his anger as he has to work alongside their scientists. He’s snappish and short-tempered and bitter, clearly only working with these people because lives are at stake. When he discovers the solution is based on his VISOR, he is viciously triumphant, his joy at saving the people boosted by a bitter sense of righteousness that these people were only saved because someone like him was allowed to survive.
And even though this anger and bitterness are very un-Star-Trek-like approaches to diplomacy–it works. The scientist who works alongside him is the first person who decides to jump ship and leave the colony behind. She sees the stagnation of their bland “’‘‘‘‘utopia’‘‘‘‘‘ and realizes that diversity and adaptation create a much better society. And while the other Enterprise crew members have some wishy-washy lament over how this will destroy this planet’s ‘‘‘culture’‘‘, Geordi never waffles. He has far too personal a stake in this to lose sight of the fact that peoples’ lives are more important than any high-falutin’ philosophical justifications. The episode might waffle over the Prime Directive points of this society’s decline, but Geordi’s perspective is the one showing clearly why it needs to die.
Some of Kirk's pet dislikes from TOS (that is, the show specifically, not the movie retcons or anything else):
Tyranny
AI, for related reasons
Racism
Men who refuse to be goddamn grown-ups and use birth control
Gut emotionality that isn't disciplined by reflection and rationality
Racism
Shore leave in particular, and relaxing in general
Julius Caesar
Going to cafes full of gorgeous hedonistic women by himself
Losing the Enterprise
Men being entitled douchebags about women, particularly in a kind of sexual vending machine situation
most 60s US soldiers
Interruptions to his meals or the prospect of anyone going hungry or starving
Any expectation of being some kind of masculine role model and paternal authority (maternal is fine)
The expectation of being some kind of alpha male sexy Lothario (sexy femme fatale is fine)
Young boys, whether little kids or teenagers (girls are fine)
Most high-ranking older men (powerful older women are fine)
Insecure masculinity games
Mass murder, especially as a means of control or "for the greater good"
An impromptu back massage coming from his pretty yeoman instead of Spock
Any kind of paradise fantasy or lotus-eater situation that removes the need for critical judgment and reflection and ethical responsibility
Ecofascism
Threats to his crew and other captains who don't do right by theirs
Spock even jokingly suggesting he (Spock) doesn't respect his (Kirk's) intelligence
Chaos/disruption in general, at least if he didn't cause it
Being alone
The many colossal assholes who don't take no for an answer (whether from him or others), or situations where refusal isn't a real option
Needless death
When for some mysterious reason there are sexy women but no sexy men :(
Inadequate information, especially with no ability to use delaying tactics and trickery to get enough information to make a properly informed decision
Information and evidence getting disregarded without a compelling reason
Always having to make the decisions and be in control of everythinggggg, even in what little personal life he has
Dehumanization
Sex pollen/pheromones
Anyone with pretenses to divinity
Tribbles

Nichelle Nichols (December 28, 1932 - )
“Uhura never had another name during the series. One of the fan writers wrote “Upenda” - which means “peace” in Swahili, I understand — not officially, but in some of their fan writings. And it sort of took hold. But when they were going to do the official history of Star Trek in a published book, the writer called Gene and asked him was “Uhura” her first name or her last name? Gene said, “Well, Nichelle and I never decided.” We always leaned towards it being her last name because it’s taken from the Swahili “uhuru” which means freedom. So it would sort of be like the same as “Freeman.” So he said, “You can make it her last name.” The writer said, “What about her first name? I’ve come up with one in Swahili. It’s Nyota.” Gene said, “I can’t give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so you’ll have to call her and get her permission.” So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, “I have a name and it’s Nyota.” I said, “That’s quite beautiful. What does it mean?” He said, “It means ‘star’.” I said, “You can have my permission!” So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: “star of freedom and peace”. I like that.” — NICHELLE NICHOLS
