It is somewhat remarkable how much can change in a few years: Motoko is not just an EXPLICIT lesbian in the new Ghost in the Shell adaptation, but also a BOTTOM.
They really took EXTRA EFFORT to make this scene SIGNIFICANTLY MORE lesbian as compared to the 2 pages (or rather, 3-4 panels) it had in the original manga:
Imagine having THAT depicted in an anime 20 years ago that would have been - rightfully - presumed to be the iconic flagship show of the entire season, and that purely on the whim of the studio direction without being able to hide behind the source material.
Science Saru really said "I know artists who use subtext and they are all cowards" and proceeded to devote almost two whole minutes of the episode to making sure everyone knows just how much of a lesbian Motoko is. Quite a difference to the intentionally strong asexual depiction in the 90s movie.
The tone of Ghost in the Shell continues to be all over the place, but it's not bothering me so much this episode. I guess I'm acclimating to it?
We open with a fantastic action scene where we see them take down the "Puppet Master". Very stylistic. Very kinetic. But right in that one scene we've got some real tonal whiplash.
We bounce from Kusanagi kind of comically wrestling with a bunch of innocent bystanders who are being puppeted into attacking her. Then one of them gets killed and everything immediately slows down and turns serious for a moment. We're reminded that lives are really at stake. It looks like Kusanagi herself might get seriously injured. And then after Togusa has apprehended the guy, we're immediately back to clowning around.
But, again, it's kind of working for me this episode.
We get some of my favorite GITS tropes in this episode. We get to see some of the nitty, gritty technical underpinnings as we see a cyberbody being built. And we get to see Kusanagi musing about identity, Ship of Theseus style. How do you know any of this is real? How do you know you're even you when AIs and ghost-hacking and cyberbodies are a thing?
It's nice to see Kusanagi's girlfriends are still in the picture - so that wasn't just a throwaway scene purely for fanservice. Nice to see that she's actually getting a life outside Section 9.
Batou is just so hilariously excited to storm the building. He's reminding of some big, excitable dog.
Good stuff. I'm definitely looking forward to next week's episode. They haven't lost me yet.

i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience

when considering the sexual violence against trans women, it's important to remember that "people only view us sexually" does not mean the same thing as "people only find us attractive". it means "people can only conceptualize of our existence within a sexual light" because that's how the majority of our coverage in media has been tinged in the past century. as a result of the chaste and patriarchal nature of modern capitalism, gender and sexuality are inseparable in much public discourse by virtue of propaganda, and as a result, a trans woman is seen as sexual because efforts towards projecting specifically femininity is only categorized as sexual. and when paired with the uncharitable perception of "man", that propaganda can often evolve how people view us directly into "sexual threat" anywhere, for any reason. i could be in the freezer aisle of costco looking down at the ground while i push my cart and i'd still get dirty looks for wearing a dress (this has happened).
when i say "they're either jerking off or sharpening a knife", i mean we're either viewed sexually, or as sexually threatening, in almost all scenarios.
