Silliness aside, I love the little touches about class issues in Pursuit of Jade. It is very clear that the magistrate doesn't usually deal with people who know the law. He is used to doing whatever he wants because no one is literate enough to oppose him. And it royally pisses Xie Zheng off but only because he knows better.
Also the magistrate immediately turning nice when he sees someone in silk. All the rich people look so extremely out of place in Fan Changyu's neighborhood.
The pawn shop owner knew Fan Chengyu couldn't read that contract when she pawned her hairpin and took advantage of that.
It's funny that Xie Zheng has no idea what things cost and how little people live on but it's also terrifying that Xie Zheng has no idea what things cost and how little people live on because he is part of the ruling class. Money means almost nothing to him and it takes up most of Fan Changyu's mental energy.
Xie Zheng clearly has access to much better medicine than Fan Changyu and the money to pay for it. The thugs who cannot find jobs because of war. Everyone around Fan Changyu being excited to eat pig offal and tails while Xie Zheng cannot bring himself to eat it because he would never be offered such a labour intensive piece of an animal and it's gross to him. He has the luxury to find calories gross. It goes on and on
fan changyu: do you think i'm too violent 😔
xie zheng: who told you that 🤨 anyway do you want to beat up your ex in a dark alleyway 😊 do you want to kill your uncle instead of kidnapping him 😊
it feels so weird to say this about a show where such a shit load of terrible things happen to them, but the writing of pursuit of jade really loves women.
our heroine, fan changyu, gets so many wonderful relationships across both genders, has such a developed and defined personality.
and small characters like the maid in qi min's manor make big impacts just by being kind to other women
then there are so many female side characters who are set up to be shallow antagonists but I think damn near every single one gets moments of dignity or bravery and as someone who's watched so many historical shows like this where they DON'T love women over the course of my life I'm just 🥹🥹🥹
((we don't talk about madam song ok))
"Help, I accidentally became a valued community member, but I'm actually hiding my real identity as a bloodthirsty and vicious and powerful Marquis from my beautiful butcher wife who I love and her little sister, who I have come to love as my own little sister, both more than I've ever loved anyone since my mother died, and how am I supposed to maintain my reputation when these people find out who I really am, I have been so soft and caring and positively, visibly, aggressively smitten with my wife, did I mention she was beautiful and also really strong?" - Xie Zheng, probably

one thing i enjoy about chasing jade that i didn't fully realize from the webnovel is how objectively, it's silly that changyu always insists on protecting xie zheng (because he's a war hero and general, is as absurdly strong as she is, is incredibly skilled in martial arts, and is prone to violence/is always 10 seconds away from that delicious phrase c-webnovels use, "a murderous/killing aura" asdfghjkl--like it's silly in terms of dramatic irony because we know he's not really a weak scholar refugee, not because changyu's not up to the task; she very much *is* able to protect him)--and yet it's her determination to protect him and take care of him that's framed as the root of his attraction and devotion to her. and so he does need her protection, not physically, but like spiritually/psychically/emotionally. her protection offers him an essential nourishment he's lacked since his parents' unfair and fucked up deaths and which he's never expected of anyone since--and which she offers without his asking.
i also really like that for all xie zheng's violent inclinations, he's basically a decent person, like changyu pointed out to song yan. he's good with changning; he makes sure the comic relief thugs don't steal the deed of her house; he takes note of the ways people demean and cheat her and prepares in advance to argue against them; he's rich and basically clueless about the daily lives of the vast majority of people, but he doesn't treat her with contempt when he realizes she's not fully literate; he's patient, shows thankfulness, is helpful around the house, and willingly fits into changyu's life.
Xie Zheng, any chance he gets: I'm married *divorce letter is in his hand* this? Ignore it. I'm married. My wife sent me these candies, the only sweets I eat. Sui Yuanqing has my wife's sister, I'm going to save her at the risk of my own life and 1,000 of my men, but our lives are only at risk if we fail, and we won't because I WILL save my wife's sister. *pauses for a few moments* Have I told you about my incredible wife and her sister?
Fan Changyu, at least a few times a day: I'm looking for my husband. *divorce letter in bag* don't look at that. My Yan Zheng is too good at martial arts to die in battle, so I'm going to find him, make sure he's okay, and then see about bringing him home. Have I mentioned he married into my family and is very smart and handsome and good at martial arts?
it's been said but i'll say it again: top tier bit of this show is whenever changyu is being given the slightest offense and it pans to yan zheng VERY LOUDLY lefty-looseying the screws on his hinges in the background
Have you been roped into the deception to keep Fan Changyu unaware of her husbands true identity?
Examples of symptoms include:
trying to make up stories and give up your pocket money
dealing with a terrified dummy of a marquis
lying to your new friend!
keep your boss's wife from committing murder
impersonating and having to punish your own boss
You may be entitled to financial compensation

I'm like five episodes into Pursuit of Jade and so far, to my understanding, Yan Zheng is a 'cat'. It's like Fan Changyu found a wild tiger in the forest and decided to keep him as a house cat. "no, Fan Changyu, that is not a house cat, that is an apex predator" well what does Fan Changyu care, if he behaves like a house cat then he is a house cat: Sitting around, looking very pretty, watching everything from a high vantage point, and also ready to murder you on the shortest of notices if you look at his wife (whom his marriage with is based off of convenience and tax benefits) wrong. He married into this family and it is now everyone's problem.

KATABASIS BOOK SPOILERS //
The last 25% of that book is literally my favorite/the most perfect piece of literature I’ve read this year.
I love when a book says “LIVE! DO IT KICKING AND SCREAMING! DO IT WRONG AND DO IT STUPID! BUT DO IT!”
KATABASIS SPOILERS
Now that I finished the book I find it kind of infuriating that all the conversations around this book (at least on booktok) are around if R. F. Kuang writes “too academic” and “doesn’t trust her readers” and not that fact that she wrote a beautiful story about not taking life for granted. Elsbeth wanted to be alive again so she could sit outside, and eat yummy food. All Gradus cared about being told was mundane things like music, and what the London skyline looks like. Because those little things we often overlook are what make life amazing. The fact that we’re alive is a beautiful, miraculous thing because of the small things that make it up, and being able to experience those things are what makes life worth it
“Who ever deserved life? But you could not question such gifts. Elsbeth had taught her this. There was no answer, only wondrous and inexplicable grace, and the only thing to do in return is simply live”
Peter Murdoch I am so sorry for ever hating you you just had horrendous tummy problems you did not want to disclose to literally anyone

just finished katabasis and i genuienly think that all the people who complain about this book being bloated and poorly paced and dragging along just don't like flashbacks or character exploration or learning new things. im sorry but i had a fantastic fucking time with this book and even when parts of it were slow it was very necessary
you should read katabasis by r. f. kuang if you like ...
unlikable but relatable main characters
biting critiques of higher academia
love stories that don't follow the structure of a romance (between two overachieving PhD students)
philosophical debates and the application of classic logic
alice in wonderland and dante's inferno
examining toxic relationships between professor and students
detailed and in depth magic systems
raw examinations of the sacrifices expected of students
texts that make you think and ponder difficult questions about life, death, school, and what we truly desire
