wild to me that people (including medical professionals) still refer to the monoamine hypothesis when discussing depression and antidepressants

you don't have to be scared of your suicidal friends. you don't have to be scared of your psychotic or delusional friends. you don't have to call the police every time someone says they feel like they want to die. you can say things like, "that sounds really hard" and "I'm going to bring you some food and you can tell me more about it"

my brother is an antifascist cop-hating EMT in the US which is where I'm getting this information from
you cannot just call an ambulance. there is literally no way that you can request that only an ambulance respond to a mental health emergency. it's impossible.
standard procedure in most places in the US means that cops have to show up and "clear" the scene before EMS can even talk to the person experiencing the emergency. this means EMS can't de-escalate any conflict between the person in distress and the cops- they're not allowed to be in the area.
if you call 911 on someone experiencing a mental health emergency cops will always show up
all of the "only send an ambulance they're not a threat to others" in the world will not prevent the cops from showing up. the procedure is that cops show up so cops will show up. the only way to prevent cops from showing up is to just not call 911 in the first place.
The fact that you cannot even talk about being suicidal without being threatened with being forcibly committed is horrible btw. We shouldn’t have to sanitize our thoughts and play Good Mentally Ill Person™️ and talk in a very careful way or risk being restrained against our wills. Therapists will say “emotions mean something” yet never look at what someone feeling suicidal means. It’s never framed as “Why are you suicidal? What are the reasons and and how can I help you move away from that?” Being suicidal is almost always treated as a threat. It’s stopping people from seeking help and potentially getting better because they’re too scared about the consequences of something they never asked to experience that is distressing to feel.

I think I'm gonna make this my go-to story. It's not the worst I've ever heard, which is an asset because people won't believe you if you tell them the actual bad stuff those people do. And it just perfectly sums up the casual arrogance everyone working in mental health seems to have. The way they treat you as inherently Lesser for being in their care.
If they can't even handle basic, easily verified shit like "I'm a lawyer" they are never going to believe you when you tell them that you know how to manage a condition you've been dealing with for decades better than they can or will.
And then there's Alexander Morris, who was put in a straitjacket, called racial slurs, and denied treatment for his potentially life-threatening heart condition when he told them he was the lead singer of the band he was lead singer of.

There are multiple parts of that article that are Jae droppingly awful but this one really gets me:
They almost let this man die in a straight jacket simply because they were too racist. And then when they realize their "mistake", they tell him that his life is worth a 25$ supermarket gift card. Of course he's suing them for $75,000 as he should but like. Can you imagine how insulted he must've been. The 4 Tops were one of the top Motown bands of all time. You can be at the top of the music scene and still, they'll kill you because you're black. And they'll use fake claims about mental illness and "aggression" to justify it
& to be clear: none of this is good for anyone. actually delusional people, people who actually hear voices or see things, do not deserve to be treated like this. there is nothing about a person harmlessly believing something fantastical (or which sounds fantastical to you) that requires you to put them in a straightjacket and drug them or deny them necessary drugs. Black mentally ill people do not deserve to be tortured and murdered in a hospital for being Black and mentally ill.
this kind of system is a weapon which can be pointed at anyone. in order to prevent shit like this from happening, we also need to deconstruct how we view mentally ill people, including people who are delusional and hallucinate, and what we view as "reasonable" or "necessary" when it comes to such people.

the thing about everyone's desire to immediately call an ambulance when they encounter a psychotic person is that it's just perpetuation of ugly laws. it's not for our benefit and it never was. we are inconvenient to their framing of society and psychotic people make apsychotic people "uncomfortable." the classic way to deal with disabled people whose presence makes you uncomfortable is the whisk them away to institution.
on my post about not calling the cops on psychotic people who are just trying to exist in public and have a conversation everyone and their mother is saying "yeah! call an ambulance instead!" why? why does someone talking in a different way about something you don't understand demand an ambulance? examine this. is there an actual threat to them going on or are you just uncomfortable?
huge fan of the depth of a good purple but another area that draws me is definitely around aquamarine/turquoise/seafoam. you can not go wrong once the green starts getting just a tinge more blue. a gal could certainly do worse than to pull over there and stay a while

yk guys I think a lot of ppl when arguing against the death penalty go for a like "people don't deserve death, etc" view and I get why ppl argue for that I rly do! but it doesn't matter. I don't trust the government to do it, I don't trust them to decide who should die, I don't trust them to determine who is mentally competent, I don't trust them to not be bigoted and discriminatory in their practices, I don't trust them to have the right people, I don't trust them to execute it in a humanitarian way. and I've had discussions with ppl who otherwise have similar viewpoints to me in many ways but can think of people they think deserve to die, and I think if abolishing the death penalty is like, a super important cause to u the same way it is to me, the argument u use shouldn't be "well these people deserve to live" (although in some cases I think yeah the death penalty is done to people who totally don't "deserve it") because that's so subjective, it should be "do you trust the government to do it?" like, do you trust the people who cant even fill potholes on your road to determine who should and should not live
If criminals don't get to have human rights, then the people in charge of deciding what a criminal is get to decide who is and is not human. Do you understand? Is this not blindingly obvious? Do you care?
Or do you assume you will always be "one of the good ones"?

The most interesting question you can ask about any character is not what do they want. it's what do they believe they deserve. because those two things are almost never the same and the gap between them is where your entire story lives. a person can want love completely and believe they don't deserve it and that belief will destroy every good thing that comes toward them in ways they won't even notice they're doing. write the gap. the gap is the character.
i feel like antipsych as a movement doesnt get taken seriously, because well people see us as crazy. but the history and the path forward are very serious. we cannot keep having the same ''oh but what about meds'' argument bc that is a separate argument. the psych industry doesnt care what drugs youre on. it doesnt care if youre ''actually crazy''. it cares about control of disruptive behavior. and it will de-person you as much as it needs to get it. the fact is you have to rely on diagnoses from specifically programmed paternalistic indexes like the DSM for treatment if you do need it, with the caveat that it is also a justification for nonconsensual treatment should you ever stop behaving right. we must be antipsych to move forward. its part of abolition in the end. the state should not have the ability to determine the validity of your emotional health/poor crisis response/addictions/variations in personal experiences. nor should it detain or practice medical procedures on you should their judgement run negative.
