do you think laurance had a divine warrior connection at all?
like in season one they say that Garroth, Laurance and Dante’s weapons from Katelyn were blessed by priests of the warriors, and we know Garroth, Travis, Aaron and Aphmau had/have relics
I always kind of thought Katelyn would have Menphia’s relic, but I almost think “the fury” fits Laurance just as well
Kul’zak’s relic probably wouldn’t have fit Laurance as well as Vylad, but I also think the destroyer relic would have been best suited to Laurance
anyway this is all to say imagine if he wasn’t a reincarnation like the rest and he’s just a complete anomaly. just completely new. he’s so important to me
i actually don't!!! and it's important to me that he doesn't!!! only exception being he's a huge Xavier nerd, but even then he's managed to be sort of adjacent to the DW 😭
whenever i do play with the idea of him having a DW connection, it's shad, but in the canon of my heart he does not have any divine warriors connection. and this is important. it's important to me that laurance is here by choice and not fate. laurance isn't here out of destiny, he's here out of love. he doesn't have to be in phoenix drop, he doesn't have to be at aphmau's side. he's here because he loves the people here and they love him and he has chosen to stay.
laurance is in the narrative because he chose to be. because he loves the people in it. he goes from a side character to almost a protagonist just by his determination to stay.
like, garroth is essential to the narrative. his connection to o'khasis drives the story forward, and that's not to mention a dozen other essential things he contributes. laurance? laurance really is an anomaly. he doesn't need to be here. there's nothing about his presence that connects to the larger narrative. and yet through his love and loyalty he carved out a spot for himself next to our protagonists.
the closest he gets is being a shadow knight, but he is not the ONLY shadow knight!! and that wasn't destiny, or predetermination by birth, that was again another CHOICE he made to be in the narrative. he loved the people in the narrative so he died for them and he loved them so he crawled back. laurance is the one to do many things, but not because he's the only person who could. he's the one to do them because he's the person who's there.
and it's sickening for laurance, who wants so badly to belong somewhere, to be the odd one out in a group filled with reincarnations and relic holders. he still doesn't belong, not without active choice. and the minute he stops making that choice, he's gone, and they don't fight nearly as hard to get him back... because the narrative doesn't need laurance, even if the people in it love him.
there's something really beautiful to me about all that. that he's just a guy. that he's just a guy who LOVES. he's not in the narrative for the plot, but for the people stuck in it. at any time laurance can exit the narrative and it will continue to function; the loss comes only for the people within it, not the larger story. history will carry on without him.
think about it, with all the big names and descendants in diaries—who will remember the boy from meteli? will meteli be remembered beyond being the past of new meteli? will he be remembered compared to his sister, Lord of New Meteli, even? laurance never achieved that sort of greatness. who will remember him against the runaway heir of o'khasis, the son of the demon warlock, our lady irene, scaleswind's runaway heir and later lord, the guard who waited fifteen years for his lord, the father of aphmau's child who sacrificed himself, the list goes on ... who will remember phoenix drop's second in command, aphmau's almost love, the orphan from old meteli, the one that got away, against all of that? at best, he is the man who died for her, but he got back up again, didn't he? will history know he died for her at all?
so the closest he gets to a divine warrior connection is this, through coincidence and choice: he'll be remembered like xavier the admirer. by few, and for his love.
