One of the main arguments of veganism is that breeding livestock takes up so much land and the fact that they are bred senselessly creates animal overpopulation which crowds their environment. If one said the same thing about humans, that human overpopulation exhausted the environment it would be eco-fascism. So you accept that humans and animals cannot be treated the same, you accept that species are not equal.
This isn't a main argument of veganism. Veganism has nothing to with the environment, its solely a social justice movement opposing all forms of animal exploitation and advocating for the rights of all sentient animals to live free of exploitation and suffering. You are making a claim about veganism which simply isn't based in facts. Yes, the environmental effects of animal exploitation is a massive issue, but it is not a vegan issue. It has nothing to do with veganism.Â
Veganism is: An ethical stance opposing all forms of animal exploitation.Â
Veganism isn't: An environmental issue about overcrowding and land use. Though certainly the fact that so much of the earths surface and resources is taken up by animal agriculture in order to needlessly exploit, torture and slaughter other sentient beings is a massive problem.Â
You are also misunderstanding what speciesism means. Speciesism is a form of discrimination against those who donât belong to a certain species. For example, dogs, cows, and dolphins are regarded very differently in some societies than in others. Speciesism is the general public in the UK treating dogs as companion animals but treating pigs as commodities to exploit, abuse and slaughter based on species alone. To learn more about speciesism I would recommend checking this out. I will also link to some more information about veganism since there seem to be a massive misunderstanding of what it is going on in this OP.Â

If I may add: Veganism does not suggest that humans and non-human animals should be treated the same. Humans and non-human animals have different interests and needs. Both, however, deserve basic moral consideration; that being the right to not be intentionally and needlessly harmed.

Also, quick reminder: the main motivation for the big majority of vegans to go and stay vegan is the refusal to be part of a system that profits from animal cruelty and exploitation. Even if it turns out that red meat is ânot as bad for your health as previously thoughtâ, that means virtually nothing for veganism. Consuming animal products may not be that bad for you, but itâs certainly pretty damn horrible for the animals who unwillingly have to suffer for the sake of your pleasure - that is the whole point.
idc if this isn't a popular opinion but i literally do not and can not care about a non vegans opinion on peta, vegan cats/dogs, critics of veganism etc, ppl eating dogs/cats. That's not to say I disagree with them, but they expect me to take their stance against a single act of animal abuse seriously when they contribute to animal abuse just as bad if not worse??? I have to laugh.

Just because an animal doesnt fully understand what youâre doing to it doesnt mean itâs okay to do. You wouldnât harm a human thatâs unable to understand whatâs going on, so you shouldnât harm an animal that doesnât understand either. Victim ignorance does not justify abuse.
in other words, you can be harmed by something you canât understand. in other, let me just be direct words: animals and human babies are harmed by sexual touching.
While this true, I just want to be clear that my original post doesnt just apply to sexual assault/rape.
I made this post in response to seeing so many people say that it was okay to use animals bc they dont understand whatâs going on. This applies to raising them for meat and other animal products. While animals are abused sexually, this post was more about how we shouldnt justify eating animals and their products just because they dont understand agriculture.
I do appreciate your addition to this post. Sexual abuse is a very serious issue for human and nonhuman animals alike. I just dont want the original idea behind this post to get lost because I wrote this with a very strong vegan message in mind
they keep trying to argue within a framework that vegans arenât using. they think it is just an understood and agreed upon reality that if you canât avoid harm then you shouldnât try. so they think all they have to do is convince vegans that we canât avoid harm and then weâll stop trying.
but theyâre fundamentally misunderstanding vegan ideology, which is grounded in an understanding that we canât avoid harm and therefore we must continuously strive to do the least harm, as far as possible and practicable.
for them, the idea that we live in a world where we canât avoid all harm is reason not to try, and for us the idea that we live in a world where we canât avoid all harm is reason to ask âso where can we avoid harm?â
