Phase One: Strangers I meet you in the grocery store and for once I am in the right place at the right time I watch as you grab a container of Turkey Hill ice cream when Friendly’s is on sale, you smile and say “life is too short to settle” I never believed that two strangers could fall in love, but I can feel my legs shaking as we exchange phone numbersPhase Two: In Love I know how you take your coffee in the morning You pretend you don’t notice when I burn dinner and you ask for seconds And I swear to God it can’t get any better than this, it can’t get any better than thisPhase Three: Out of Love I pretend I don’t hear you wake up, you pretend that you think I’m still sleeping You stay out late drinking with your friends and I got a pizza last night because burnt food is only edible when the person you love says it is Your bags are packed and we promise that we won’t forget each other but when you smile and say “life is too short to settle” I know I never will And I swear to God it can’t get any worse than this, it can’t get any worse than thisPhase Four: Strangers I saw you parked at a red light last week and my legs didn’t tremble like when we met and it became apparent to me that we weren’t strangers We can’t be strangers after you kissed me and said we could last forever Strangers aren’t supposed to know your mother’s name or how you don’t like watermelon lollipops because they taste too much like your childhood toothpaste
